Thank you, Coach Boeheim. I remember that cold walk through the campus as a kid with my family. It was worth it to see you and our beloved Orange basketball. So many memories of wins and heartbreaking close games. Good luck and support Coach Autry. 🍊🏀❤

I think it would have been fitting for Boeheim to retire last year when his two boys graduated SU. *Boeheim, in the Basketball Hall of Fame, said his one regret was his loss as a senior in high school in 1962 at Lyons, NY to East Rochester - two undefeated teams in Section V AA - a game that went to OT before the largest crowd in the history of the Rochester War Memorial.* (ER went undefeated the next season and won the Section V title again - the only team to repeat - so don't feel bad Jim).

Would’ve been pretty cool. But I can’t see Boeheim retiring after his first ever losing season. I mean there really was no good time since things weren’t looking to be much better this year. Looking back, if he retired after our 2016 run to the final four or a year after, it probably would’ve been the most graceful way to leave. But Boeheim is a stubborn bastard, has s big ego, loves to coach and truly loves Syracuse University and the city itself…which has been frustrating these past 5 years, obviously. but ultimately it’s why he’s the legend he his, and why he’s loved by many. Including me. Thank you Jimmy B for everything you’ve given to Syracuse and college basketball. You will be sorely missed. I true icon in the game.

I was one of Boeheim's students when he was an instructor, and an assistant coach way back in '72. I took a 1-credit course on athletic administration. He was the same then, as he is now. Stoic, tough, and unwilling to bend, even a single inch. In the interim he has brought us to great heights, and, more recently, to unacceptable lows. In my opinion, Recruiting to upstate New York is beyond tough. Everyone realizes that. But, Coach Boeheim should have turned over the reigns to Mike Hopkins 10 years ago. Then, this program that I have loved since 1969, would have continued the legacy that Coach Boeheim left for all of us Syracuse alumni if he had done so. I will always love the Orangemen... and I will never accept the politically correct change to "the Orange". That is how I feel, as an Orangeman who stormed the court at Manley Field House in 1973, when my friend and classmate Chuck Wichman hit the shot that sent the Orangemen to the NIT. That is my memory of my college years at Syracuse. A whole lot better than my academic experience, for sure...Thank you, Coach Boeheim.

All I have to say is the grass isn’t always greener and I think Syracuse is about to become Georgetown in the big East have a look at their record the past 15 seasons you would think how fast football fell they would have learned their lesson I hope I’m wrong I really do but I have a feeling cuse basketball is in for a real rude awakening

I mean, I agree with your overall premise. And I especially don’t like how this all ended (although it kind of just fits for how I pictured Boeheim eventually leaving). But at the same time, he’s 78 years old. The grass was honestly dying from old age and needed to be replaced. Don’t love the immediate hire of Autry and would’ve preferred a national coach search, but he’s got my support.

I actually have mixed feelings about Autry replacing Boeheim... On one hand Autry,Mcnamara and Griffin did the majority of the recruiting the last few seasons and if they can get the last few recruiting classes to stay on for one more season and get Syracuse back to the NCAAs,I will give them the benefit of the doubt.. But on the other hand there could be 2 viable replacements for Boeheim just an hour or so from Syracuse.. 1)Matt Langel at Colgate-(4 straight NCAAs) and Brian Earl at Cornell-(Cornell is still alive in the Ivy League Tourney and still could make the NCAAs this season)...

Jim Boeheim still had a year left on his contract... so this seems forced and just wrong. This is nothing short of a public firing of the 2nd winningest coach in history! Are these 'Cuse SUITS living under a rock? 47 years!... player and coach... My God! They just read the script on paper, with no feeling or emotion acknowleging the depth of his accomplishments.

This was a good conference and helped make up for Wednesday's debacle but I'm not sure why Wildhack asserted that GMac, Griffin and Autry are all great assistants...there's really not much evidence of that...the program has struggled the most since they've been on the staff.

@@Locobeware It's not going to get any better. Top players aren't coming to syracuse. The weather and area are shit. He's always had mediocre talent, with the exception of a few and he made them into quality teams. The university did do him dirty, Coach K had a Farewell tour basically. The second winningest coach of all time in d1 deserves a much better send off.

@@SEGAraid You obviously don’t follow college basketball or know anything about Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University, and the city itself. Boeheim said himself and if you knew his personality, would laugh at getting a Coach K type send off. That’s just not how he is. And for how mediocre we’ve been the past couple years, we’re still always top 5 in attendance with a passionate fanbase. You can’t tell me Lawrence, KS is a better area than Syracuse, so with the right coach we will be back.

@JunYas50
@JunYas50 Жыл бұрын
JB did what he could do until he didn't have enough bullets to shootdown the 3's players learned to rain down on the 2-3.. What's happening with JB is what's happening to the mindset that brought us to this day in this way. The University and Athletic Dept. from the mid-90's to their forced decoupling needed JB's teams [with all the baggage] to be the trick babies that the football team had ceased to be as an inspirational hope during the season for the fans. But time overtook the means and ways of JB and the hopes his teams-the Flag Ship of SU-had been providing. And the War Horse, the last SU money-maker beyond the ACC stipend, was not pulling its weight and headed for the decided mediocrity of the football program. Something had to be done. In the words from the script of Godfather-I, 'Nothing personal. It's strictly business.' The Bean-counters needed a change that should've been done more gracefully, but the nature of the business model had a winning-JB as their only sure thing. Now it's fallen on Adrian Autry to do it or be the fall guy of any failure of not living up to the aura that maintained and sustained JB. BEST OF LUCK, Adrian. You, too, deserve better. But these are the times that have come to you and the aspirations you worked for and hung-in there for. Orange Fans. You drank the Kool-Aid to a devoted, blind loyalty for JB who (and his teams) made you feel better as a Syracusan, Central New Yorker, and general Orange Fan-the under-appreciated who could do better than the heralded. Your hallowed avatar of your self-esteem's glories has been 'removed'. The sting and the hurt is as much for yourselves in this changing of times as it is for the inglorious way you see JB was done. The Sun will rise tomorrow and You, Orange fans, will survive and hopefully thrive no matter how the B-Ball team for other teams fare-as I'm sure the Bean-counters WILL. It stopped being about the game that's played, but all the commodification that determines who'll be sitting in the courtside, sideline, or box seats, while you provide the sound and fury atmospherics for the game and these discussion boards..

Lets say Autry does become a good coach. Maybe he feeds of the family thing the way the Pitt. Steelers run things. I have hope this is a good thing . Maybe,just maybe Judah sticks around as does Brown, Q , Benny and Sy ,add in using JG the way he should be used-an off the bench scorer, this could be a dangerous team next year. I say the glass is half full and I will put my support around Adrien.

@Paul Stefi- Too many unknowns right now. Even with known parts, Lady/Mr Luck could reshuffle things. Missing a space eater at the center and wings could be taken as a recruiting deficiency. Uptempo and scrappiness on defense and offense as in the past might not be enough without athletic space eaters
