I served in the U.S. Army in Germany in a tank battalion from 86-89, right at the end of the Cold War. This song captures that time perfectly. I’m an old man now, but this song still brings a tear to my eye.

@@Calinn86 Pfft...the irony of you saying that on a Polish girl's channel... You do a great injustice to the truth -- which is that many people (e.g., Poles, Germans -- East and West, NATO soldiers and even Western taxpayers) sacrificed blood, sweat and tears to give us a world that is much better now, for more people, than it used to be. This is inarguable. Your energy would be better spent working on what remains to be done rather than attempting to deceive others in re what has been done.

Your immediate reaction to this song, so beautiful and raw, is what we have all felt for decades. And here we are… right back in the same fire. It gives me hope that young people will take up the torch of peace from us old folks who once took that torch from the generations before us.

This song always touches my heart as well. It was written shortly before the Berlin wall was taken down and with its timing and it's message of brotherhood/sisterhood it became something of an anthem for the fall of Communism. I'm both glad to see that it can still touch fresh listeners today. And saddened that its message of hope remains as needed today as it was back then.. But great reaction girl! And hope you explore more songs by this fabulous band!

This song always brings me back to the end of my teen years at the end of the 80's/start of the 90's. As you said it became practically an anthem, not only for the fall of communism/the Soviet Union, but all the changes which suddenly happened after decades of the Cold War and the world basically being quite nervous. The tearing down of the Berlin wall and reunification of Germany. The release of Nelson Mandela from imprisonment and a few years later the official end of apartheid in South Africa. The warming of relations between east and west (see the images of Gorbachev shaking hands with the Pope for example) and, yes, the fall of authoritarian communism and rise of democracy in many of the states formerly behind the "iron curtain". It seemed like the world was on the right track for a while there and we had reason to be optimistic about the future.

This song will always have a place in my heart. I was a dependent of an active duty Marine at the time and I lived daily with the knowledge that if the balloon ever went up we were gone. A military base would assuredly been targeted by ICBMs. The fall of the Wall and this song erased that terror. Never in all my years did I ever think we'd face that type of crisis again. And yet, this song stands as a testament to people's desire to live in peace and prosperity.

The timing of this song couldn't have been better. Released in Nov 1990, on the album entitled "Crazy World" (pretty fitting title for that time, as post-Cold War Europe was a mess) it came at a time when the Fall of the Soviet Union was in the air. The Berlin Wall fell a year before, in Oct 1989, and then the Soviet Union collapsed the next year in Dec 1991. I was a Senior in High School at this time, and was so hopeful about what the future would hold in the former Communist Block, but as Yeltsin's Reign in Russia came to and end with Putin taking over, that hope quickly faded even back then, because once a KFB agent, always a KGB agent. I tried giving Russia the benefit of the doubt as they were helping build and man the International Space Station, but with Putin's continued aggression into Chechnya, Georgia, and Ukraine, it's clear that Russia has not changed at all since the old days of the Soviet Union. The only real difference is that they aren't hard-core Communists anymore, and they're allowing religion, but other than that, they're still the same ol' Authoritarian Dictatorship that's Hell bent on re-establishing the Russian Empire.

I sincerely loved your reaction! I served 10 years in the Royal Navy from 1981-1991. I spent almost all that time chasing Russian submarines and ships. After the Navy, I was very lucky to meet Klaus Mein. The lead singer, and thanked him for this song.

Having lived through this period when I was in my early 30's, I remember watching the Berlin Wall getting demolished, and seeing how joyful the people were, regaining their freedom! Yes, this song brings back a lot of memories.

As a little boy in the late 80's I heard this song for the first time. I remember hearing the guitar solo and picturing a man, high above, playing this solo, and light spreading from his fingers to all of the earth. I still have this vision.

I've never seen your channel until right now. I'd like to say 2 things if I may: 1. Your reaction to this song was completely normal. This is an extremely powerful song. 2. You should listen to their live version of this from the 2015 hellfest concert. Not only does the singer still sound absolutely amazing in his 70's, but the crowd interaction sends chills right up your spine.

I love seeing your reaction to this song, and how close to home it hits. I’ve loved this song since I was a little boy, and I’m old enough to remember when the Berlin Wall was torn down. My mom was explaining to me how families were separated, and just trying to get across this line. I already understood war at my age, but borders and being separated in this way was a new concept for me. The music is so beautiful and expressive and I’ve always appreciated all of the Scorpions musics. Great reactions!! We can always recommend some more music for you to dive into from them and other artists.

Lived in Germany as 10 year kid then and played that song all the time. It's the first time seeing the clip though and I now get that the cold war end was the inspiration for it. Although i lived it i never connected the song with the event. Seeing it gave new meaning and made it a positive emotionfull experience for me.

I had just got out of the army 2 months before the fall of the wall. If you had grown up your whole life during the cold war and did 3 years training to fight the soviet union, this was monumental. I find this song magical and almost cry every time I hear it.
