Adrift in Tokyo is streaming on AsianCrush for free: www.asiancrush.com/video/000429v/adrift-in-tokyo What do you think of the film and it's messages / themes? Let us know in the comments! EDIT: **SPOILERS** At about 15:20, Eli references a quote from Satoshi Miki regarding the serious aspects of the film. The quote can be found here (www.fareastfilm.com/eng/archive/catalogue/2008/ti-stai-facendo-una-risata-intervista-a-miki-satoshi/?IDLYT=31711), and is as follows: "Right. When I first brought the script to the production company, they were concerned about the dead body, about whether we should show it or not. My thought was that we need to show that, behind the silly events on the screen, there’s another reality, which is the dead body. The first production company I showed the script to took issue with that aspect of the film. They said it would make the movie too unbalanced, that it would damage the multi-layered structure of the story. There’s the guy going to the police to confess, there’s the trio from the supermarket, and they’re all set in motion by this dead body. The film is structured like a comedy skit - one act can cause unintended consequences for total strangers."

Hey, guys. How are you? I discovered your channel through Spooky and I got really captivated by your videos about Mishima, Les Rallizes Dénudés and Tetsuo. Anyway, I would like to do a request/sugestion. Can you review any of Terayama's movies? 'Throw Away Your Books, Rally on the Streets', in particular.

I saw this film a long time ago, and only one thing I remember was that the loan shark guy was a husband of the huge star from '70s. She retired right after the marriage and his acting career eventually fizzled out as he aged since his look was sort of typical youth film star of the Showa era. If it is free, I like to watch it again. Thanks for the info!

I just watched it again, and I enjoyed it though I did not think it was great. Also I felt the same way again that it would be better if they casted someone else for the loan shark guy, someone who were a bit more mysterious or a bit more violent look. The actor who is known for the lonely gourmet guy TV show, was in the colleagues of the dead wife. He could be better for that role, I think. Then your two points, The first: Would it be better if the wife lying on the bed was not shown? My answer: Yes and No It would make us wonder more, which is good, but then some sort of explanation is necessary on why the loan shark was doing that if he did not kill his wife, which is not easy to do and would make it lose the focal point. The second: Could the younger guy be the son of the loan shark guy? My answer: No. At one moment, I thought so too, But then Nope, that would be too cliché. Over all, this film is very traditional Ninjogeki-esque. Outsiders got together coincidentally and acted like a real family for a while, like Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers. This trick has been used so many time in the history of Japanese cinema, but still works because we are hungry for some sort of bonding to escape from our loneliness. The ending is very typical as well, the protagonist leaves or being left before the thing becoming too sticky because they know they cannot be a real family. They rather leave sooner before it always gets too hard to do so later. If you see films like Tora-san, they always leave at the end. So to me, this is the traditional Japanese film in the modern disguise.
