2023 comment: I've had this keyboard a couple weeks now, and the only downsides I have found is a) No Sysex support (unlike the MKII), so if your thing is 80's and 90's synths you're SOL, and b) the aftertouch is channel only, not Poly, although the 16 pads DO have polyAT so you may be able to find a workaround using those.

Just found your guy's demo and first think out my mouth was "fuck yeah". haha.. A lot of other channels just suck and it's great to hear from some proper heads! But it really seems like they hit the nail on the head and drove it straight through the board with this one, great job Novation!

I’d there a way to have this play through an iPad at 432hz tuning?! I’m into looping and looking to get a keyboard and loopy pro set up, instead of the boss rc 505, but my instruments (flute didge etc) are 432hz

I just want to see how everything is physically connected to the Novation and then to the computer/interface. Trying to hook up a few midi hardware things (I am inexperienced in midi) and integrate with Ableton. Stuck on the right way to connect them all together.

Any luck? I’m in the same place
@DavidChatterton-j6b Жыл бұрын
The best way is to connect the SL MKII into your audio interface and out from the audio interface to USB input of your PC. When you open Ableton go to preferences (or settings) and choose audio and choose your audio interface. Now do the same and go to midi and choose the Novation SL MKIII as the controller. There are a bunch of videos showing how to choose the right settings in Ableton using a controller. Cheers.

To control external gear, were in Components does one select Bank MSB/LSB and Patch Change? Got to be in the Templates on the buttons right? Would be nice per track to have eight Bank MSB/LSB plus Program Changes per track on the buttons in the template. "....super duper easy, right ?" Please provide some guidance on where to find a Reference guide on Components for the MKii. Thanks.
@davidkulmaczewski49114 жыл бұрын
You do this in a Template. Any control can send a Program Change message; knobs and sliders send Program Changes (within specified values) as you move them, and buttons and pads can increment or decrement the Program (by a specified amount). You can also program a button to go to a specific (fixed) Program, but then you've broken your knob or inc/dec buttons. I've done Bank changes using buttons with CC values (not sure about MSB/LSB). Activating the button increments the Bank, but it doesn't seem to affect the hardware until a Program Change is sent (e.g., changing Bank from 0 to 1 does nothing; subsequently changing Program from 10 to 11 then moves you from Bank 0 Program 10 to Bank 1 Program 11). I also wish I could find better documentation for this system... both low level like Template Editor functions, and high level like how Sessions are supposed to be used.
@winddealer14 жыл бұрын
@@davidkulmaczewski4911 Hi David, that is great news. You are correct a Channel Program Change value is required after sending Bank MSB/LSB. MSB/LSB just select a bank. Then the PC works within the last selected bank until a new BankMSB/LSB is made.

Can I connect all the hardware to this synth and control everything from it yet still use the daw to record the mix?
@mpmi75885 жыл бұрын
Sorry to make a book out of this but Here's my work flow on an MPC. ........ 1 seq can be set to however many bars I want containing whatever pattern I record. From there I can copy or make new sequences with variation to the patterns and then chain them into a complete song. I need to know if this keyboard can do this controlling various hardware.

wait.. can it send more than one MIDI channel at once, from the keys or sequence? (can it duplicate the output across more than one channel?(
@davidkulmaczewski49114 жыл бұрын
You can define overlapping Keyboard Zones so it sends duplicate messages on up to eight channels, including Pitch, Mod Wheel, Velocity, and Aftertouch. This doesn't work with the sequencer, though, unless you manually copy patterns from one track to another. However... in total, you can send any one track to four separate devices (in some cases). The SL Mk3 has two MIDI output sockets and two sets of CV/Gate/AUX outputs, and you can set any track to output to all four. So if you had two separate MIDI synths, both on the same channel but connected to different sockets on the Mk3, and two CV controlled synths, then you could send the same sequence to all four.

do this auto quantice the notes in the daw??
@mpmi75885 жыл бұрын
Ok from what I've watched, I have a serious question. WHY on earth would anyone build a bunch of patterns on one track? Wouldnt that be like building a song on one track? That seems to be confusing once you start to go to the other remaining tracks. Somebody help me figure this out cuz I'm thinking of getting this keyboard but I wanna do basic live sequencing by using one track at a time in 1-4 bar patterns and then chain those patterns into a song mode. All of this building patterns within a pattern is ridiculous. Not sure why anyone would do this.
@ronh81264 жыл бұрын
You chain them together using Pattern Chains. (I'm no expert but this was in the User's Guide). From the Users Guide: "As you are constructing Patterns on the MkIII you may decide that you want longer ones. However, you can combine Patterns to form longer sequences. Press two or more Patterns simultaneously to create a ‘Chain’ beginning and ending with the left- and right-most pressed Patterns. Note that this doesn’t destructively ‘merge’ Patterns together, but rather launches discreet Patterns consecutively to form longer musical ideas. If you wish to see more Tracks at once or are only working with two-Pattern Chains, press Shift + Patterns to access the Expand View. This will arrange the Patterns for each Track vertically. Use the page buttons to access more Patterns. Just press Patterns to return to the default (horizontal) layout of Patterns. Hold Clear and press a Pattern (pad) to remove all note and automation data from that Pattern, and reset the Pattern to its default settings. To copy a Pattern, hold Duplicate and select the Pattern. While continuing to hold Duplicate, press a pad/s to paste to it. You can paste multiple times while holding Duplicate. You can also copy Patterns between Tracks. As with Steps, automation data for a Pattern does not copy across Tracks. [TRY THIS - If you need some inspiration, or are just in the mode to try something new, try copying Patterns between Tracks. For example, you could copy your drum Pattern to your bass track, and vice-versa. You never know what ‘happy accidents’ might occur.]" Hope this helps.

This chaining pattern business seems like a nice workflow if you like to sequence in odd time signatures with more than one bar...much cleaner to have each individual pattern at the "correct" length. Say 4X15 steps...that would be a pain on most step sequencers. I only wish we then could arrange the scenes in a song mode :/

This thing is so complicated it gives me a headache. I find KeyStep Pro so much better for my needs - it does exactly what it was made for in a simple way - has 4 track sequencer, you can easily record and transpose those sequences and control harwdare. Here you get all the software DAW bs mumbo jumbo that requires you to have a PhD in computer science to wrap your head around and you end up being a spaceship operator rather than a musician xD It certainly is an incredibly powerful tool in the hands of a pro, but for a beginner like me, KeyStep is so much better.

This looks like a great controller! But documentation is garbage if you are interested in using vintage synths or MIDI analog equipment. There is no basic overview of how signals and midi channels are selected and routed. Maybe just maybe everyone isn't buying and using your set presets? How about a deep discussion of the way everything is router than showing us how to use a step sequencer.
