Diesel Railcar Simulator (Early Access) | Time for my first impressions of this train simulator, which is currently in early access! This title puts you in the drivers seat of British trains, including the Class 37 and 112, and sets you on your way on British style routes from the 1960s! I take out a small DMU for a short stopping service to get a feel for the simulator!

One of the things about this game that I enjoy is that the train body and the bogies actually bounce and wobble around depending on how smooth the track is and where the track joints/pointwork is. Quite mesmerising being on the bogie cam and watching all the gubbins rattle about, brings more life to the game

I bought this about when it was released back in 2018 but never got into it as I was more into the dovetail train sim at the time - but it looked very playable then and looks even better now. Pretty sure that window with the speed limits and signals wasn't there last I looked. Might be time I reinstalled it !

This looks an interesting title. I was impressed with the graphics and tbe sounds. Like you say, some optimization needed, especially with the shadows popping in. Nice to see some new sims on the channel Will.

Looking across the dashboard main controls, left to right. I found it was easier to remember control type to key binds by remapping.. Accelerate Up F2 Accelerate Down F1 Shift Gear Up F4 Shift Gear Down F3 Direction F6 or "F" Direction F5 or "R" Increase Brake Force F8 Decrease Brake Force F7 Handbrake F9 - F10 This keeps the keyboard to a similar orientation to the dashboard layout. Or, of course, the number keys as I think the Function keys bind to camera views. I just thought I'd share the general idea. ;) Our British Rail Horns Doppler effect sounds A1 in this simulator too. A Track side view of your loco speeding past then hitting the High-Low is extremely well sampled. Cheers & TTFN

I actually have put most of the controls onto axis sliders, but for those without any axis to work with, that is an excellent binding set!

Manual lap brakes - modern trains have self lapping brakes, the more handle you use the more brakes you get. Older trains have manual lapping brakes, the more handle you use the faster the brakes apply. The trick (as I think you worked out) is to use a little bit of brake lever to start the brakes slowly applying then when the brakes have applied as much as you want you put the handle to lap to hold it at that setting. I've never tried lapping the brakes while releasing them so I'm not sure how that works, something to try. If you have the Peninsular corridor addon for TSW the train that comes with that route has manual lap brakes, as do a bunch of older diesels and the steam trains, and of course TSW doesn't give you a target speed, stopping those things in the right place is 'interesting'.

I remember doing this a long time ago with a train, but this one felt more realistic in how it operated! With the target speed, that can actually be switched off for bonus points in a session, as well as a number of other things. Once I am used to the sim, I shall start doing that. I suppose the target speed in a way is a replacement for distance to a said waypoint, be it a signal at danger or a station.
