In this video, I take a look at my first whistle video from 2017, and track (and analyse) my progress right up until 2024 - as an adult beginner tin whistle player, with very little previous musical experience, learning by myself from home, with no lessons (and no traditional sheet music). What a treasure you are to me. I am taking lessons. My teacher has me using Mary Bergin's tutorial volumes. Very helpful. When I get bored with practicing I pull out your tutorials and play along with you the tunes I love and enjoy. I had lessons from January to March 14 2020. That was the day the COVID restrictions were instituted and was my last lesson until this March, 2024. So, I have had 19 lessons.. . about 5 months. I found you during COVID but was not ready to play with your composite group, though I enjoyed watching, and promised myself that "someday . . . ". That you, Steph, for sharing your music and your tabs. They help me immensely.

I find it incredible, Stephanie, that you began your journey as a musician “so late in life” lol!! because you are now so proficient and accomplished, not only with the tin whistle but also your attention to preparing backing tracks and harmony parts. I’ve only just discovered your version of “Erin Gra Mo Chroi”, and although you recommend that we check out other KZbin versions of it; your own take on that awesome tune is right up there! Although the song is technically in the key of G major, your arrangement retains lots of minor backing chords that some other versions don’t, and therefore creates such an emotionally charged feel to the tune. On the second run-through of the melody you begin the overdub of the high D whistle to back up the low D whistle carrying the main tune. And at the end of the musical phrase at the half-way point, the melody lands on an E but you are playing B on your high whistle at that moment. The somewhat “unresolved” emotion of those two notes together highlighted the nostalgic, wistful longing so much more and honestly gave me chills! Wow. Just wow!!

I am in awe. I am 27 like you were and have just ordered a tin whistle! I bought a Chinese bamboo flute many years ago after watching a historical drama but could never make a sound on it. I bought an electric guitar two years ago but always had a block in that I had to take lessons or follow a long term guide to learn. Much like for yourself, it was a discouragement. I was lamenting with a friend the other day that I wanted to express myself with sound yet failed in my attempts thus far and she suggested a tin whistle as a starting point before trying the bamboo flute again. I saw your channel when looking for reviews on tin whistles, and quickly found myself going through all your videos. I recently finished Baldur's Gate 3 and seeing you have some covers for those meaningful and emotional songs has really inspired me! And Halo! And some Heilung! Apart from two workshops I more or less stuttered through some basic tuned from the beginners booklet and the music cassette I got at 17. Your vids made me to follow my wives harp playing more directly and I actually got complimented by some bouncers while playing a bit by myself two years ago on New Years Eve in Temple Bar, when I had shortly left the pub party for some fresh air. Which I simply lay at your door, because you gave me the impetus to practice more regularly. Thanks a lot. 🙏🐒

To think of how much has changed that now kids can think, "when I grow up I am going to make money playing penny whistle on a computer TV show". 😂 If I said that as a kid in the 90s they would of thought I was out of my mind. It's possible now. I started around 15 with a path no one has taken before...guitar 😂 but now I can play multiple instruments. The key is that instruments are grouped into families, so you can learn the other instruments in the family easier, and once you develop an ear for, and knowlede of music, you can start an instrument in another family (PS: Technically piano is in the same family as guitar, violin and all the stringed instruments, chordophones, so you sort of have to seperate the keyed instruments)

Aho Stephanie, And I thought you had been playing much longer. I started playing the Native American Style Flute the same month and year as you started playing the Whistle. While you were 27 at the time I was 59. As you know, I like to transcribe some of your tutorials into N.A.S.F. finger tabs so I can play the songs on my instrument of choice. I found your channel at a time when I had reached a point of stagnation and probably would have given up if it weren't for you. Even though I can honestly say that I've played every day since I blew my first note you are way better at whistle than I am N.A.S.F. . That's because of your previous experience with other musical instruments and the path you chose to pursue with the whistle. Congrats! I think you were very good from the very beginning. I had given up music years ago. Then I began watching you in my 60's. Now in my 70s, I play every day for fun and to accompany a friend who plays harp. I can play almost any tune pretty well by ear. I also am learning trans bamboo flutes from Japan and China, the Shinobue and Diz. I'm not perfect but I love it so much. I have a whistle with me everywhere I go. And it all started by watching your channel. Thank you for posting this! I have owned a tin whistle for more than 20 years, but this past year has been the first time I've ever really tried to learn it correctly (instead of just pulling it out and playing around every couple of years - I didn't even know how to get to the second octave until last year!). Your channel has been such an enormous help for learning the basics and a few fun tunes, and I'm now able to pick things out by ear and learning how to separate notes without just tonguing. This is the first time I've taught myself an instrument (versus lessons) and the first time I've stuck with it and wanted to keep going. Very enjoyable post, I'm glad you found an instrument that you felt comfortable persevering with as you clearly have considerable natural musical talent and abilities. I came to whistling in a somewhat different way. In a previous life I was a reasonably accomplished brass player and my main hurdle is the (comparatively) miniscule amount of breath needed as I used to play tuba in brass bands and orchestral work, as well as trumpet and a few other things. You've made impressive progress and have now an identifiable style all of your own. Great stuff and great channel.

I'm still glad that I found your channel soon after I started. You pointed out that it's important to use a metronome or play with other musicians to stick to the right pace. You have done amazing Stephanie and i wish you all the success , i have learnt tunes from watching your tutorials, my own journey was i did play in an Irish Flute Band back in my twenties, So i had a slight advantage i also had a Tony Dixon high D whistle which i would pick up now and then, However my Flute or Marching Fife always came first over the whistle til the Corona Epidemic put us all under lock down, So with more time on my hands i thought i would give the whistle a proper go . I now play a High and Low D whistle, also a Traditional Irish Flute and still blast the Fife from time to time .... I honestly learnt a lot from your tutorials and others on You Tube so massive thank you 🙂🙂🙂

I started learning as an adult player G’Morning! much the same way you did, but I have you, and TWT. I’m conspiring my progress to yours and I think that my anxiety and fear is a huge block for me. I only started with the Tin Whistle because of the Star Trek TNG (HUGE FAN) episode “The Inner Light” and hearing it played live at Carnegie Hall while on stage in uniform got my in my feelings, and I wanted to be the person who could play the song, which led me to make my own whistles out of pvc (since I’m not rich and can’t afford to buy all the whistles in every key to play with you) and all this during quarantine, but this hobby stuck! Thank you, Stephanie!!!

@@BB-pn2qv do try with a metronome, but better still, play with music (original tracks, karaoke tracks, KZbin covers, whatever!) and if you get the chance, with musicians that are better than you! Or... Perform somewhere! That'll give you the incentive to practise to!

You are my teacher, and the musician I try to play along with. I didn't pick up the whistle for some time, but I'm getting back into it lately, again, because of you. I will never be as good as you are now, I don't practice enough by far, but for me it is all about having fun. Must say, I still play on my Clarke Sweettone whistles, (I have 3 the same, because of them clogging up), and they are starting to bore me. I have been waiting for Chris Wall for so long, to get my Brass Sweettone and my low F, I forget about it in between. He doesn't seem to make much progress in catching up with his waitinglist. I won a Dominic low G from Danilo, but again, I need to practice more on that, and find the big hole hard to close. If I see you play the biggest whistles, also Dominic's with the huge holes, I wonder what I am doing wrong. You don't seem to have bigger hands then me, but I guess it is all about having the patience to practice. I was last in line when it comes to recieving patience.. Still, I am enjoying it again, and one day, maybe I will get half as good as you. That would be plenty for me! I thank you with all my heart, without you I would have given up on playing a long time ago. You rock, and you are really a very good musician now!!! Thank you for everything you did and do for me! That was a really interesting and inspiring video. Have been teaching myself (badly for a few months) using your videos and some others and really enjoying this instrument. I am doing it purely for fun so there is no pressure thankfully. Finding your videos on KZbin was a major stroke of luck as the format suits me perfectly with the tabs and the slow versions and great selection of fantastic tunes. I am curious if you would recommend just sticking to the high D whistle until I get better (wishful thinking) before I consider adding a low D whistle to my collection or if there is any benefit other than satisfying my whistle acquistion syndrome?

Uhh, I'm actually a tough one to follow in that respect 🤣 I don't 'practise' as such...my practising has only ever been working out how to play a tune by ear, once I've done that, I usually record the tutorial and never really play the tune again 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Sometimes I'll do a few of those in a day and then not play for weeks 🤣 sometimes I'll be working out easy tunes one day, hard tunes the next. I don't have a structured or dedicated practise time - I have KZbin commitments - the only reason I still play! 🤩🙏❤️

I think I bought my first high whistle in June 2016, I bought 2 generation C whistles, then followed with a Clarke original D whistle when I realised that's what I needed to learn on (with what was already available online). Bought a cheap low D whistle a few weeks later (shearwater plastic) when I discovered they existed 🤣🤣 and then after 6 months of playing I bought the MK pro. I did a lot of research and bought an expensive one that was well regarded, so that I wouldn't need to buy any others 😁 Then I found out about all the other keys available 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@CutiepieTinWhistle Thank you for your reply. I also started on a Clarke Original in June 2016! Nice coincidence. I played the clarinet for many years, so the wooden block felt so familiar and natural to me. I now only play the Dixon DX001, which is my absolute favorite. It's perfect for my sessions and gigs. The other brands I collected in my early years live in my desk drawer. LoL. We all have our go-to whistle. How impressive you started low whistle shortly after learning the high whistle. I would love to play low D, but I just cannot do the piper's grip. Your playing is so enchanting. You inspire me. I so appreciate your time, tutorials, and talent.

I noticed that even in that 1st year clip, you already have that beautiful breath vibrato (came naturally to you?). I've been playing for soon 3 years and I still can't do it consistently and when I do it, it's quite slow.

I think it came from my previous singing experience in my teens/early twenties. I actually struggled NOT to do it (still kinda do, I have to concentrate really hard 🤣). We did a lot of local theatre, and I was often cast as the love interest (being the young female 🤣🤦‍♀️) so singing slow love songs all the time (even a little opera style singing here and there) you have to get the vibrato going a bit for effect 🤣 Acting certainly helps you understand what your body can do and how you can control it - comes in handy occasionally 😁

it would have been better if it was from day one instead of starting of at year one. So for me the video does not help. May be latter on but i was a bit disappointed in that regard. Still the video is good and it shows how you have improved. One thing that did help is in your 2017 video you were separating the notes, i am trying to find my way in that regard and i get confused about what do. Do i do a long blow or short breath, what does it mean just the tu sound. i find when doing the tu technique i am actually making the tu sound it can be heard in the whistle. I am very sure that sound should not be there but i do hear it on your 2017 video as well. One thing i must say i am completely not interesting in playing with other people, i have already said this on your other videos. To me playing instruments is my private hobby etc. To some it may be a bit narrow minded/selfish, but i know how nasty the world is and they love to put people down. One thing i will add time is not a factor in how good one plays and silence in music is a key part. I would advise learning to read music as well. I can do that to some degree, but it gets hard on the bass piano and when sharps and flats are added. Also scales are important as well, well they extremely important to music in my view. Also learn some music theory as well its a nightmare i am know as there are so many, but major and minor formats are very important, they can improve your music making. I may have jump the gun here and you probably have learnt some of the above. If so i apologise. I used to hate music theory i though musicians just came up with them just to confuse the hell out of people. Some still do. Eventually i got some understanding about it. Its a slow process well for me it is but i find it useful. Keep up the good work, great video, advice and well done in what you achieved in such a short space of time.

If you scroll down there is a chart that shows the different keys of tin whistle, and the additional keys (minor and major) each whistle will play in. D whistle play easily in D major, E minor and G major, and the scale for each of those keys just runs up the whistle from the position of it's starting note 🙂
