This is the second of seven video training's on facilitating batterer intervention groups using "Another Way...Choosing to Change". This teaching looks at the importance of adult learning activities and the need to tailor the activities to the learners. It offers suggestions such as taking a holistic approach and facilitating brainstorming with flip charts to provide a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience. It also highlights the importance of motivating positive behavioral changes and recognizing familial roles.
Using the example of “describe your clients”, Nada Yorke teaches on collateral subjects such as trauma-informed strategies, secondary trauma consequences, and the value of humanizing versus pathologizing the client. By following these guidelines, it is possible to create an empowering, supportive atmosphere for clients.adult learning is exampled using flip chart activities to increase engagement and reduce resistance.
The flip chart activity is excellent to elicit what the client already knows or believes about a particular subject (i.e. anger, stress, healthy relationships, et al). It is a tool to teach, reinforce pro-social behaviors and increase socialization opportunities within the group process.
