My son is nonspeaking, autistic and has high support needs. He has food sensitivities to dairy, soy, and gluten. Insurance doesn't cover the special foods he needs and they definitely don't cover supplements. He goes to speech and OT. The gas for traveling to and from therapy and doctor's appointments really adds up too. My mom helps us out financially but I worry about when she's gone how we will manage. Yes, I completely agree autism absolutely makes people rich, and often not the people who need and deserve it...

I have always been sceptical of the money making side of autism as with all pharma, to the point I couldn't convince myself to get a private diagnosis because I had paid for it, I know personally at the back of my mind I would have been constantly thinking was it biased in any way, as I can't see many people recommending a consultant who didn't diagnose in their favour, so I waited an extra 2 years to get a NHS diagnosis, now I can't say I feel any better for it but I have had reasonable follow up with the NHS and my own Doctor and have a little comfort that they didn't have any particular monetary gains, this being said I am in my 50s and guess I am far more suspicious than I was 30 years back.

Fair enough. Even with my private diagnosis, it wasn't something I could arrange without a GP referral. Just wish I could have gotten 1% of the aftercare side as I still haven't, and refuse to spend more money. I don't get one penny is assistance, yet life costs me more with having Autism. The joys.

I don’t see it as a step as much as a required state in the world. Same for Adhders. If you look into it, a lot of savants and who revolutionized our world are autistic people. In its own nature autism is less social than neurotypicality, in nature we’d be done for if we weren’t for socializing. The restrictions of autism could really hurt you in a nature setup. ADHD for sure makes up for the lacks of autism and autism does the same for ADHD. I just see it as each one has its own place, autism, audhd, adhd, ocd. Think of it as the matrix, whenever it needs the next step it gives you an autistic child, when it needs revolutionizing it gives you adhders and when everything is nice it gives you neurotipicality. Because as much as neurotipicals are annoying lol, their way of having the “general” empathy really helps in a lot of areas and their flexibility while being cautious also keeps the world going. REALLY oversimplified but I hope that my point isn’t seen as dismissing, rude or misunderstood.

Hi Paul, thanks for posting another great video. I always look forward to hearing about what you’ve been up to and about your opinions on all topics. In regards to children’s services - you are so correct. There are far more programs and resources for the younger generations then there are for adults. I believe the reasoning behind that is to help young patients identify and correct challenging behaviors before they reach adulthood, where challenging behaviors have far more consequences. It’s like the old adage, ‘you cannot teach an old dog new tricks.’ By early to middle adulthood, it is practically impossible to correct behaviors that are ingrained in us, however youthful brains are quite pliable. I wish you lived here in the States, as their are many services for adults and special accommodations are the norm, not the exception. I’m super into genetics, and I received both a clinical and genetic diagnosis that is unbelievably accurate. Researchers have now confidently identified 70 genes that are definitely connected to an autistic phenotype. What’s even more interesting is that certain genes can contribute to a specific expression, such as aggression, or light sensitivity, or hyperactivity. Would you ever be interested in a genetic screening to help identify specifically which genetic variants you have? That is called ‘Precision Medicine’ - or addressing and tailoring your services and medical care to specifically what you need. 🌷
@AdultwithAutism
@AdultwithAutism 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca, I think I didn't explain myself properly in the video if it came across like that. What I meant for starting with older generations is so that it can help younger generations, but more accurately as they will have genuine comparable data rather than guess work. If it gave older Autistic people a voice, that voice is better than trying to guess from different studies which contradict consistently. I can tell people all the things that are of concern, why they are, and ways I have found to manage. If they reached out to us and listened, it would help so much more than running a test on a mouse as I gave for the example. The problem with the research no matter what it is, is the fact there is ALWAYS another piece of research to debunk it, just as the one with the mice. So it is 'guess work' if it cannot be conclusive, and that is why it frustrates me as it's just a forever money spinning machine, and Autistic people are the real test subjects. It is good to hear there is a lot of support for adults in the US, and actually surprising as people always tell me how they are very behind in Autism diagnosis, how professionals are not fully trained in Autism, how insurance doesn't cover Autism, and how it can impact in courts should couples spilt up and there are children involved. You are definitely the first person to say there are positives! So it is good to hear there is help for adults as there isn't here unless you need high levels of assistance already. I would be very interested in doing the genetic screening thing, and we have similar things here that let you know if you have intolerances to foods, prone to certain disease etc...and it is that bit that worries me. If I saw something scary on there, I would worry about it for the rest of my days!! 😂

I was told, if I wanted to get involved to help autistic non-profits....I need this $6k post-grad certificate. Really annoying, considering it took me 17yrs on/off to earn my degree. She could've offered gaining exp by working in the non-profit....I've read statistics that 25% autistics graduate HS, and 1/4 of that graduate college. Love this, as always love the intro. I believe we are discriminated against as a minority/different culture. I too am glad I'm autistic. There's like 60% left handed autistic...would you call left-handed a disability. I believe we are a form of human evolution & I don't care what anyone says...I think we're better.....but being gaslighted by being "squashed" told we're disabled. I do believe they should put non-speaking/intellectual autistics at the side of the spectrum in a different category...I guess we have the levels. I know this will prob get flack. But, with my autism, I have a bigger brain & more neurons....my brain is f-ing awesome. The other side of the hyper-connectivity is anxiety, social disinterest, sometimes emotional dysregulation, overload/shutdowns. I do believe we're better & it's like any minority that threatens----gaslight their reality & therefore these evolved humans will not be a threat. Hahah, you just mentioned the evolution thing---great minds lol. We just need our own city/country mate, I would love to 100% be around only autistics. There are a category of annoying/rude autistics that don't seem to have adhd or learning issues (dyslexia, etc)...they are well-meaning....but, I even like being around them over an allistic person. This is where I'm at in my life. I get tired of not speaking the same language...it's exhausting.

Haha, I've got to admit when I've spent time around other Autistic people, I've had a better experience. Not everytime, but it's certainly more on the side of Autism than not. We have good points, we have bad points, just like everyone else. It's that they see it as a disability, I get that as I try harder so people won't put me at a disadvantage by default. I shouldn't have to, but need to because of the mindset or others. And I agree, there needs to be a clear definition at certain points for Autism, as its far too vast. It's like referring to the US as one place, and not realising how different it can be when you look st it closely!

I haven't been assessed for autism, but I've got it. And the question is Why are we born with it? my personal opinion is it's evolution. Non-autistic people are reckless. without being disrespectful. They rush into everything. They buy things which are useless. Wasteful. (They're destroying the planet) I won't go on. When something evolves and becomes strong, it grows. when some evolves and becomes weak and dies, (evolution). People with ASD are more cautious They didn't rush into risky things Some people with ASD have high IQs or high Intelligence. They are the next step in evolution because they are much more advanced without destroying the planet. I don't really know how to explain that well, but I think you get the gist.
@AdultwithAutism
@AdultwithAutism 3 ай бұрын
I believe this too, which is also why I believe they won't let Autistic people govern Autism. It's also why they consistently try to find ways of suppressing it rather than accepting it. And I suppose also why they never reach out to Autistic adults to understand Autism who can provide clear and direct answers, and instead attempt to 'figure it out' in unborn babies and toddlers who cannot speak to them.
