Jack Stauber is stylistically one of the most talented and unique artists I’ve ever encountered on the internet. I stumbled across some of his videos a couple months back and was instantly entranced by his bizarre visuals, wild emotive singing and interesting blending of stop motion animation, cartoons and computer generated graphics. What really impressed me about his newest project, SHOP: a pop opera, recently featured on adult swim, was the seamless blending of all the afore mentioned creative mediums, as well as the subject matter that he chose to write sketches and songs about. The project managed to somehow introduce several complex ideas about modern life, drugs and making decisions all while hiding under the guise of being an animated short about a man visiting the supermarket.

it struck me a tad on each of the videos, but looking at this quote summarizes the message well here's my take on what he's trying to say (all opinion) Milk: Everything will expire; commentary on existentialism Oatmeal: Routine will drive you nuts and enslave you to a clock of dull life; have variety! Coffee: There's a difference between enjoyment and addiction; have moderation. Paper Towels: Life will always have trial and tribulation, but messes can always be cleansed with effort and time Bread: Materialism doesn't make you, and instead creates an artificial person that leaves you a husk without it.
@deathen68945 жыл бұрын
Let's see if I can sum up the moral of each short: MILK: Live a good life and be a good person, so that when you "expire" you can do so knowing you left a good impact on this world. BREAD: Impress people with your personality instead of your possessions. Just be yourself. There's nothing wrong with being plain "Wonder Bread." PAPER TOWELS: Life is chaotic and messy. That's just how it is and there's nothing you can do about it. Don't get caught up with the giant messes in life, just push forward. OATMEAL: You could follow a routine and feel comfortable having everything planned out, but life never really follows your plans and road bumps will always get in the way. Just go with the flow instead of trying to plan against it. COFFEE: Everything in moderation. You don't need the things you enjoy to survive. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a cup of coffee but don't get addicted to the caffeine. CHEESE: When faced with a tough decision, don't be afraid to believe in yourself. Life's full of decisions and even if you don't know which answer is right there's no harm in trusting your instincts. Everything's a learning experience and you're always learning from every choice.

That's an interesting way of interpreting it. It hits harder that way. It would also make sense from the very beginning because he was having trouble choosing which sample. How to live his life sort of speak. So throughout this shopping experience, he's grown as a person and makes his choices and in the end, as you put it, he is happy with them. He wants another life, but of course, by the laws of nature he's denied that. You only get one life, so don't waste it by worrying about things you can't control or being someone you're not. You'll thank yourself in the end when you exit the store.

This was such a great experience I like how the characters led back to the grocery list and looked like the groceries he was buying for example: Expired milk🥛: linked to the elderly woman who was seemingly close to death much like the milk. The shape of the woman’s hair is pretty similar to the top of a milk carton. artisanal bread 🍞:The guy in this short seemed very fancy much like the bread and you’ll notice his character is shaped similarly to a bag of bread (with the top of the bag being his hair). Paper towels 🧻: The shopping assistant looks similar to a roll of paper towels and even has perforations to the left side of his head. He was also cleaning up the mess once again linking him back to paper towels. Oatmeal☀️: The man in this short had a head which looks Very similar to a bowl of oatmeal, his hair being the oatmeal. The mans constant obsession with time management links nicely to Jacks focus on a boring and regimented life needing change. Coffee ☕️:The woman’s head is shaped similarly to a mug, her ear being the handle and the 3 lines of hair being steam, her erratic behaviour shows people’s dependency on coffee and a need for moderation. I like in the last short how it links back into the sample stand in a Cyclical structure and could have been used to represent the repetitive process of grocery shopping.🍦 Sorry if this was a bit long but these shorts were so brilliant and these were some of the things I noticed 💕

But we see with the lady that it’s hurting her child and her job and ultimately herself CHEESE: ANXIETY overthinking a decision(simple) because we lack confidence in ourselves when really if we take a step back we realize it’s not that big of a deal and if we don’t overthink it we can choose easily and be happy about our decision {These things might not be the actual meaning but it’s what they mean to me} All of these things really go back to one thing LIVE YOUR LIFE thank you Jack Stauber,

I just realized; everything he chooses has some difference that counteracts the song. Milk- A bottle of milk that isn't expired. Pretty self-explanatory. Bread- Chooses plain Wonder (sorry, Wowza) bread, showing that good things don't have to be fancy. Paper towels- Chooses a rag instead, making less of a "mess" of the environment. Oatmeal- Mystery flavor, a change in routine. Coffee- Decaf, which (I think) is less addictive than regular coffee. Cheese- Something he chose himself, also self-explanatory. Overall, this was really good, and I love listening to it! Good work, Jack!!

Okay, someone on the Bread episode mentioned how the people he encounters look like the things on the grocery list, and after watching the full series - it's true: Milk: The old, probably dying lady looks like a carton of milk. Bread: The guy looks like the bag of bread he grabbed. Paper towels: The dude looked like a roll of paper towels. Oatmeal: The dude looks like a bowl of oatmeal. Coffee: She looks like a steaming cup of coffee. The only place it really deviates is this one - cheese. But I think that's because at this point he realized that he's not defined by his choices. The cheese represents himself, but he realizes that unlike the others, his choices on these trivial things don't define him, so he doesn't "transform" into any of these things. And if you look back, every episode ends with him picking something else than what he first looked at. Milk was expired, so he got a new carton. Bread was too complicated of a choice, so he got the plain toast. Paper towels were too messy, so he got a washrag. Oatmeal was too plain, so he got some with "mystery flavor" to spice it up a bit. Coffee was too addictive due to caffeine, so he got decaf. Cheese... he chose nothing. He let the universe decide for him this time and ended up disappointed. You'll never be as satisfied when someone chooses for you. And onto the people: The milk lady refuses to deviate even slightly from her routine, and probably never will before she *expires*. The bread guy is obviously quite snobby, but he's still pretty polite; and he says he only gets his bread from "Ronsanto's" or something like that - so he gets actual *artisanal* bread; made by an artisan. The paper towels dude obsesses over a pretty trivial mess, something most people would just clean up and get going, but not this dude. He's probably kind of a *mess* himself. The oatmeal man is a very routinely person - to an obsessive degree. Everything is on a routine, and the moment something falls out of line he freaks out. His life's repetitive, there's no surprises or accidents allowed in his world. It's plain like a bowl of *oatmeal*. The coffee woman is clearly addicted to coffee - she mentions how she couldn't stand the coffee she got earlier, but still drank 3 cups of it because she needs the caffeine. Cheese was our main character. He wasn't shaped like a specific kind of cheese, or even any kind of cheese, because as I stated earlier, he wasn't defined by this trivial choice. He just wanted *some* cheese. This series is an analysis of behavior. How different a lot of people are. Each song represents the lives of the people he meets in the store. The last song is him realizing it doesn't matter in the long run. Just get your groceries and get on with your life. Anyway, thanks for reading.

This whole series had a good point. Let me show you: In this short, it was said "every milk will expire so toss your oatmeal and eat something new". What he means is everyone will die one day, so try something new and get out of your natural habit. It also said "coffee moderation, life is messy, and your bread isnt you". He means moderate how much you consume of something a day, life will be messy so dont fight it, and you're not like the rest. (I dont know if i got that bread part right. Also people asked about the "deaf" think and idk.)

I feel the Bread part means that your lifestyle shouldn’t represent you, or that you can’t base your personality off of one specific thing
@lynneriossherman4 жыл бұрын
The bread part, based on the bread song, is probably referring to the fact that you are not what you own

Love the isle goers designs and how they match the item/crisis Old lady: had her head shaped like a milk carton and is bound to expire Rich dude: literly looks like the artisanal bread he buys and is overtly materialistic Clerk: is cylindrical and even has dotted lines on him to represent thebparts that rips and cleans up the mess Time tight man: his head/ literally looks like a bowl of oatmeal and his paranoia Coffee mom: her head and hair make her head look like a mug and her dependancy on caffine to function

The reoccurrence of people asking the main character if he is deaf could be a way of saying that the people themselves are def to the problems they are facing, or it could be a way of telling us that the main character is being deaf towards his own choices and the way his own mind works by just going off what everyone else says.

I think this series as a whole is about the process of becoming an adult. Understanding your mortality, learning how to be okay with yourself and true to who you are, knowing that life is messy and learning to cope with it, figuring out how to live your life responsibly while still finding time to actually live, managing the things you like doing so that they don't control you and most importantly understanding the power you have to make good and bad choices (this is the most important I think because its the theme the rest of the pop opera revolves around in some way. 'You are responsible for what you take of the shelf, you are responsible for making the decision to be a good adult'. This is shown via the sensible products he picks up by the end of each video, ie the reusable towel, the mystery oatmeal, the decaf coffee, the generic bread, etc.) . These are all things a self aware young person would start thinking about, moving into the next phase of their life. The series is basically saying 'you are an adult, you're doing adult things now and with this independence comes a realization that there are things in life you need to figure out and deal with to be happy'. I really like how such a basic adult activity as shopping was used to portray the twists, turns, and pitfalls of life and adulthood as a whole. I especially think it's cool that other adults who are presumably older than the young man in the video who have already succumbed to those pitfalls and gotten lost were used to exemplify the consequences of not taking care when taking those steps into adulthood. It's a really cool series, he did a great job with it and I'm really glad it exists :D

Milk: Dont wait, You don’t know how much time you have left. The milk was expired, Jack made a song about it then got a fresh one. Bread: The man was “fancy” or snobbish, Don’t depend on the things you enjoy to show who you are to people, Jack got a normal loaf Paper towels: Mess is normal, Jack got a re-usable towel instead of paper towels Coffee: Don’t depend on something so much you can’t function without it, The woman shut down when she didn’t have a drink, So Jack got de-caff

Hopefully AS will keep using Jack for more stuff like this in the future! I’d also love for him to have his own sketch show, but even 11 minutes an episode would be kinda demanding, and might not even be a good fit. His style is probably more effective in shorter bursts like these mini “shorts”, and like the way it’s always been. Could be wrong tho. Maybe he’ll even release a film someday that’ll blow everyone’s socks off, who knows? Also this should be released as an EP, I would not hesitate to buy it.

i've watched shop: a pop opera multiple times, but i just now noticed that while he's walking through the aisles of grief, he walks under signs that actually have the names of the five stages of grief on them, and as he walks through them the lyrics, his expression, and the lighting actually change in accordance to that stage. (as much as i absolutely adore the cheese puns, i changed them back to the the words that they replaced so that it makes more sense) denial: "this can't [be], there's more cheese to choose than i can see" anger: "you [gotta] be kidding me! i can't make these decisions on my [own]" bargaining: "if i act better, could someone else select my cheddar?" depression: "are these [blues] permanent?" acceptance: "i'll be okay, i'll look away and let the universe say..."

SHOP Last thing on the list is cheese. Just cheese. That shouldn't be hard at all. *ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah* *AND NOW: A DARK WALK THROUGH THE FIVE AISLES OF GRIEF* THIS CAN'T BRIE. THERE'S MORE CHEESE TO CHOOSE THAN I CAN SEE. YOU GOUDA BEEN KIDDING ME, I CAN'T MAKE THESE DECISIONS ON MY PROVOLONE. IF I ACT BETTER, COULD SOMEONE ELSE SELECT MY CHEDDAR? ARE THESE BLEUS PARMANENT? I'LL BE OKAY, I'LL LOOK AWAY AND LET THE UNIVERSE SAY. Dairy free maple coconut water cheese. I could have picked something better than that. I COULD *I COULD* I TRUST I WOULD PICK SOMETHING BETTER, BETTER, BETTER. MY CHOICE IT'S A DECISION I MAKE TO BE A GOOD GO-GETTER. EVERY MILK WILL EXPIRE SO TOSS YOUR OATMEAL AND EAT SOMETHING NEW. COFFEE MODERATION, LIFE IS MESSY AND BREAD ISN'T YOU. I know what I wanna try, strawberry please. This is amazing! Could I try the other one? No. That's alright, ah. That was good.
