Days 4 & 5 of the West Coast Solo Adventure brought me through Idaho, which at first brought a lot of whining because I-84 is quite possible the most miserable road for motorcycles in the US. However, things got MUCH better when I met Brian, Kim, and their beautiful family. The riding in Idaho was spectacular in it's own unique way, but cut short by the KLR's infamous oil problems-- coupled with another major problem of my own making. --

It's encouraging to know that not everyone who goes on an adventure ride is a motor-head with intimate knowledge of fixing what ails their steed. Thanks again for a poignant lesson in setting off on an adventure with less-than-perfect preparations.
@eveRide
@eveRide 10 жыл бұрын
osimnod I think mechanical knowledge is a real setback for most would-be adventurers. It has scared me for a long time, as I have a hard time just changing a tire or pulling a carb. It shouldn't stop people, though. There are too many good people out there willing to help, and too many good shops that will help you on your way if you have a little windfall setup.

eveRide ADV Agreed. Be prepared to fix the most common things that break or fail and know how to change those parts, then count on the beneficience of others to fill in the big needs. We are a helpful brotherhood in times of need.

I am loving this adventure series man. When you step back and think about it, all the flat borning highway miles were very worth the fact that you got to meet those guys, see how they live and then ride some awesome areas together. I can't wait to see the next step in the journey.

ColoradoDualSport Ah man the flat boring highway miles are worth it EVERY TIME! Even if there's nothing at the end of the highway but a nice person, it would be worth it. It's a good thing that highway led to nice people and more amazing adventure, though!

Wow my wife and I have made a number of long trips on our KLR. That air cleaner at the end at the end of the video.... Oh not good. We have had very good luck with the KLR. It has been up the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Circle and as far south as Eugene, Oregon. We have also shipped it to Europe last spring and rode it through Europe for three and a half months. Saw some great country. The KLR has a lot of kilometers on it now but still runs great. We have not had too many oil burning problems. I use synthetic oil and change it every 3000 to 3500 km. I really like the french Motul 10 W 50. Expensive but worth it. Great video thanks for sharing.

Ah I missed out! When I first got my klr650, this area and the rest of southern idaho is where I broke it in. Everybody is always talking about how northern idaho is so much better. Well I've always found the farming community's and high desert landscape fun and uniquely beautiful. Their are so many roads to explore in the Owyhee's, and a KLR allows you to explore all of them. I now live in the Sawtooth mountain area of Sun Valley, and I find myself missing the area you passed through in this video. High desert country is the best! Keep up the good work! Hope to see you back in Idaho to share some brrrrap's!

Totally dig the knobbies on the DRZ400SM that DRZcoffeegirl Ride is sportin' there. I have to try one myself now. I was riding around today thinking about the adVANture and this installment of the series is pushing me more toward that idea. Old cheap box van that holds a bike by day and an air mattress at night could go a long way in making those long miles easy so I can focus more on the off road rides.

If you had rode the high desert across Idaho instead of I-84, you would have had a lot of fun. Might have taken an extra day or two, but tons of fun out on the high desert. Wow.... what cool folk, DRZcoffeegirl Ride , and your ride captain, both awesome..... After seeing what got past the air filter, I think I'll start a 790 big bore kit fund for ***** .... I'll bet his cylinder, pistons, and rings are worn big time from that fine St.George dust.... probably why you burned so much oil too.... Man..... you can't kill those bikes...... they keep going and going and going. This was a great video bud, I love how you pre-occupied yourself on those long highway miles.....It reminded me of the movie "Castaway" where his best friend was "Wilson" the volley ball..... good stuff dude...

Looks to be a great series, I think half the fun for the viewer will be seeing how you overcome the trials and tribulations along the way. Loved seeing the short DRZ sm comparison too. And for those planning a trip through Idaho check out 55 north of Boise through McCall, one of the most scenic areas of the West, but yeah, I-84 is not on that list, at least not until you get closer to the Columbia River.

Looks like Idaho was a very awesome experience - looks like that family was really cool and nice to stay with. I really want to hear more details on the service you did - not to toot your own horn or anything, just really don't know what's out there, curious to know what other people do for services, I'm always open to new ideas in that regard! Yeah, that air filter was slammed with Moab dust, haha, it probably was also the culprit for hitting the throttle and no-go. I mean KLR's protest past 80 anyway, but in the planes on a cool day with a lighter rider it should have been able to get past 70 no problem at all. It could do so at 6k elevation or so with my fat ass and I weigh almost 2x as much, haha. Look forward to watching the rest of the series.

those long draining straights through nothingness are the worst! that's probably the only time i really felt the lack of power in a 650 single, or any bike for that matter. the thing to remember for all the adventurers out there is that no matter how many hundreds of miles of booring straights there are between yourself and the trails... they are a means to an end. 50 feet into the trail you'll be grinning like a kid again, loving life!

I always pictured Idaho as being really flat and extremely boring. I guess I was right! But it looked cool in the hills on the dirt. Yeah, you gotta do the boring highway miles at some stage on a road trip. We avoided them mostly on our recent trip, but it's inevitable that you will have to do some of it. It's hard to find that perfect bike. My V-Strom is a great bitumen tourer with the ability to do good gravel, but anything more than that would be a struggle. I would love to have a DR650 but that would not give me the same comfort on the bitumen. I would not choose a KLR for touring myself, I have heard of too many issues with them. They are just no Suzuki! :-p Awesome edit mate, looking forward to more!

Hey Tyler. Epic adventure my friend. My cousin and I try do do a 4-5 day trip like this every year. Living in eastern SD though, it takes half the trip to get anywhere interesting. Haha. Anyhow, I have a dark feeling that your dirty air filter will also be the cause of your oil consumption. The filter looked as if it wasn't oiled, probably the main culprit really. Hope you get/got it sorted. Where can I donate towards your next tank of fuel? Take care. God bless. And keep safe my friend.

First, Another fantastic video! Second, Can you tell me what kind of battery life you're getting on the Sony. I have to charge up my GoPro 2 multiple times during the day if I am using it to film my ride. Lastly, I have had 3 KLR's. 1 06' and 2 09's. The Gen1 never used oil like you saw on this ride. Both of the Gen2's drank the oil and left me scrambling to refill it ever two fill ups. The theory is that the oil level will remain good until the oil has had a chance to sheer, then it will start to pass the rings. The other theory is that if the bike hasn't been jetted properly, the gas and oil will mix and start to thin it out allowing it to pass the rings. Regardless, the next Gen2 KLR I purchase will have the 705 kit installed immediately.
@eveRide
@eveRide 10 жыл бұрын
Micah Wright The Sony tends to last about two hours for me. On day 6 I got over an an hour and a half of Pro Mode footage without needing to charge it. It doesn't have any reliability issues, either. I am a firm believer in the Gen 1 and would take mine around the world. A Gen 2 loses a little in my book because of the oil issues, and the Gen 1s just had such a legacy, there are parts for them everywhere. Most of them will work with the Gen 2, but the Gen 1 just has so much heritage.

Yeah, keep your air filter clean. That is exactly why your milage was bad. When you have a dirty air filter as bad you did, it can cause damage by sucking in dirt dust into your engine. You might as well sand down your piston rings and cylinder side walls because thats exactly what is happening here. Oil passes the rings, burns oil, and that equals frustration. Piston rings can be replaced but your need to open your engine to get to them. So, keep that air filter clean. If the cylinder side wall gets damaged you have three options. 1. Leave it and efficiently burn oil and have a smokey KLR. 2. Bore out your cylinder and go to a bigger piston because you may have to. 3. Rebuild your top end and get a new cylinder head.

Is that type of problem normal with a klr? with the air filter and that little mileage on the bike? When the filter was finally changed did it help the mileage? I have been thinking about getting a klr 650, but I am getting a little worried about the reliability of a klr in every day use. It's not unusual for me to ride 3 or 400 miles a day But I am 58 years old and weigh nearly 280 pounds. Maybe a klr isn't for me. I'm not much of an off road guy. But it sure looks like fun. Thanks for sharing your fun though.

Benny Nash To be totally honest, although I love the KLR (especially the gen 1 models) I have some new reservations about their "bulletproofness". I have heard a lot of people have the oil issue between 5000 and 10,000 miles. The filter, though... that was totally my fault. However, no matter how clean the filter was or how topped off the oil was, I couldn't get above 40 mpg when traveling at 70 or above. I should have grabbed a 16t sprocket.

I know this is an old video, a good one by the way but for those that aren't aware car motor oil is NOT the same as 4 stroke oil designed for wet clutches. Make sure you use the right type of oil for your vehicle so our little machines can bring years of enjoyment! I always recommend when you buy a bike or car & plan on doing any work yourself to grab yourself an FSM (factory service manual) . Not the cheap of the shelf ones. Learn how to work on your own bike because every time we get on our bike or in our car its our life at stake & knowing its going to preform as it was designed to means everything. I've learned I can not trust most mechanics with my stuff, especially when my life depends on it.

Kind of sad that you only got two people on that first group ride. That KLR oil issue is STUPID I can't believe that they are that bad about pumping oil out. A DR650 is definitely sounding better. I hope Damon was able to get yours to where it doesn't have that issue.

OtisENGINEuity Ah I don't think the Gen 1 KLRs ever had that issue to begin with. Yeah I won't lie, I was disappointed at the Idaho turnout. It was awesome to get to know those two, but there were like 12 people on facebook who told me they wanted to ride. When I got there it was a no-show. I'm sure they all had good reasons, but I might have bypassed Idaho altogether, or perhaps even planned a route through the Northern area. However, I'm glad I did what I did.
