The fear of death in humans and the desire to have immortality developed on this axis provided Sauron with a natural space where he could manipulate the Númenoreans. In Tolkien mythology, the weakening of the Estel of an incarnated entity by its own internal dynamics or weakening it consciously by external factors makes these entities vulnerable to such manipulations and leads them to the evil of Melkor. While Sauron corrupts the Númenoreans, he destroys Estel, who represents the belief in Eru, and on the other hand builds a false hope of worshiping Melkor.
