For root(x) + 1/root(x) = root(3) , we can just let root(x) = t and get: t + 1/t = root(3). Thus t^6 = -1, or root(x)^6 = -1. Thus x^(6/2) = x^3 = -1

Now after putting it in given equation X^17+1/(X^17), =X^18/X + X/X^18 (X^18 = (X^3)^6) =(X^3)^6)/X + X/(X^3)^6) We know X^3 = -1, = 1/X + X We have already determined this is equal to 1. = 1 Ans.

Where are you taking 1/8 common from? If you take it from the given data it becomes 1/8(8x+4/x)=2. I guess you made a mistake in taking common multiple out.

I think there is some limitations to the formula. Because I did 2x + 1/x = 4 then I got the value of quation as 4^3 - 3*4 = 52. That's odd

this is because these questions are touching the surface of imaginary numbers too, a but. if we analyze, the range of (x + 1/x) where x is a real number, is (-infinity, 2] U [ 2, infinity). so, for all values less than 2, the solution must be imaginary (which can be observed when we make a quadratic for x + (1/x) = a, a < 2). so here, in x³ = -1, x is not a real number, which means that it is an imaginary number, which is a solution of x³ = -1. it actually has 3 solutions, lookup cube roots of unity if you feel like exploring the subject. i don't think it is needed for CAT, but for clarity it will help.
