Does anyone else do a really strong barre and then kinda fall apart in the center? I found the advanced barre "easy", in terms of me getting the combinations and being able to do them but it still really challenged me and picked at all my flaws. But I totally fell apart on this haha, anyway thanks Katie! I just have something harder to work on now!!
@vonsmore50465 жыл бұрын
Dude same. I pick up barre combinations waaaaaaay faster than center combinations and I literally have no clue why. Hahaha.
@GS-ys3xv5 жыл бұрын
Same! I can do an advanced barre as well, but struggle soo bad in the centre😬
@madisoncox80024 жыл бұрын
it could be that you rely heavily on the barre for stability and security, so you sort of freak out when you get to the center and dont have that barre. maybe try and left your barre arm in the middle of combinations? just to practice not relying on the barre more/
@GS-ys3xv4 жыл бұрын
madison cox. This is definitely it for me, I am embarrassed to say I tried lifting my arm away a couple times and almost fell over😳. So now it is a routine part of my barres to lift my hand for a few seconds here and there so I never rely fully on the barre for support. It’s hard to do, but my centre has begun to improve because of it😊

Thanks for a great video! You are an inspiration to me - Yes, I'm one of those ballet dancers accepted into SAB at the age of 10; continued for 7 years; got a bad knee injury in a subway fall that screwed up my kneecap; quit. But came back after many years, still enjoy the exercise and the beauty of Balanchine. I was there when Suzanne Farrell came in - She did a demo with Mr. B - He wanted to show us "the right way" to do things. Oboukoff, Tumkowsky, Danilova, Dubrovska, Dudin, Muriel Stuart, Stanley Williams (guest), Diana Adams (guest), Eddie Villela (guest) - studied under all of them! Took class with Violette Verdy and Patty McBride and Kate Mazzo. Those were the days! I love watching you do all the moves. Still have them after all these years.

I love this one so much, I keep coming back to it. When Kathryn first posted this 7 years ago it was very challenging for me. Now, it still is challenging but in new ways based on where my new areas of improvement are. It is amazing to re-visit this same video and find that I have improved a lot over the years and some of the "hard parts" for me are now enjoyable and effortless. I would probably say this about all of Kathryn's classes, but because this was among the first videos I tried several years ago, it has a special place in my workout "repertoire" :-P

This center class is a wonderful advanced class. I really appreciate having your center class as an advanced class I can do when I am unable to go to live classes in San Jose or San Francisco, CA because all the studios' live, in person classes are shut down due to the CA stay at home orders due to the Covid 19 virus. It's great to have this as a resource for advanced dancers. Thank you!

Maybe a more intermediate center. And would it be possible to do a more Vaganova like style? I know that is a lot to ask so you can ignore that if you can't. Thank you so much Katie your videos are always a highlight of the day! They are always so useful for me!

Salty Sugar Plum I love watching their videos so much! I didn't go to a really structured studio and I don't know if the teachers were even really familiar with the different methods (the way I learned everything is just more similar to Vaganova than other styles I've seen). I would love explanations of things in Vaganova style so I don't mess them up!

This is exactly the style that one of my teachers does. The first combination (tendu's) is nearly identical actually. All my teachers seem to do a different style. Mostly Russian influenced. Thank you!

I am not an 'advanced' dancer -- I did a beginner ballet barre series of classes on youtube, and since done mainly barre classes from you and other channels and/or beginner centre/barre type things, as well as a couple of tutorials in and out. But I like my legs being in the air, and beginner classes flows etc rarely have much legs in the air (and sometimes feel not expressive enough), and are a bit frustratingly simple, so after doing one of your barre's I thought 'let's go for it'. So happy! I actually followed and did the first three exercises first time!! I think I'm now a little too excited to concentrate on more haha! I'm not nearly as elegant as you of course -- shame there isn't a bit mirror to check against. And it was fun throwing legs round a little more :) Thank you so much for doing it :)

Really good class, Kathryn. Thank you. I have a sugestion or a petition: It is possible for you to do a you tube video doing a center class for people that do not have much space at home? I consider that if people do a ballet youtube class it is mostly because they, for some reasson, are doing it at home. Taking this into consideration, I think that it would be usefull for us to have the posibility to do your youtube class in a little room. That might be a great idea because no one has done it like that on you tube. Thanks a lot Kathryn and excuse my english.

Hello! Thank you so !ugh for this video. It has been very helpful and fun to watch. You said your calf was weird so you weren't jumping full out. I was wondering if your calf could be hurting because you don't seem to get your heels down after a jump. Not getting your heels down when landing a jump seems very painful and causes stress on multiple body parts that should not be carrying your body weight or absorbing the energy of your jump. I loved the video and think you are an amazing dancer but I am concerned for your body!

I would love to ask this question about your timing: You often vary your timing off the counts, and even change it mid-phrase, though you always begin and end each portion of the exercise exactly on the phrase. Is this an artistic licensing that is expected in an advanced class? You have done it in all of your other barre or centre videos as well. Thanks, S.

Hi! I was wondering if you have any tips for "lengthening" leg muscles? I have a big bulk of muscles on the top/inside part of my leg near the knee and I don't really like the way it looks. I want to lengthen when I am doing développés front but I tend to squeeze the thigh. I also find that when I am straightening my leg I grip the thigh which what I think is the cause of these muscles. How do I straighten without gripping and lengthen développés front without letting go of the hip?? Thank you!! 😘💖
@saravernaez47817 жыл бұрын
e.claire hair This used to happend to me a lot (and still sometimes). Try doing, for example, developpe front on the floor (lay down, your leg goes up to the ceiling), and imagine your toes touching the ceiling, try going as far as possible; same with developpe second. What I mean is, don't try to get the leg to your forehead, but try lengthening it as if touching the ceiling. This helped me get the feeling of lengthening the muscles (which I didn't know how to do). Hope I was able to explain myself, and that my tip works out for you 😋
@ahcaroles7 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I really understood your issue, but Kathy gives great tips on her Developpés video, take a look at that! One thing that stuck with me was to focus on your base leg/hip while doing developpés... this will take the pressure of the working leg and make it go higher, it really works! Also, try to do the lifting by squeezing your abs and glutes instead of your thigh.
@carlyheartsdance7 жыл бұрын
I noticed during the allegro sections that a lot of the time you don't lower your heels all the way to the floor in between jumps - I was always taught that you must fully lower your heels every time. Is that correct or is that something that depends on which technique you do/teacher preference etc.?

I was wondering if it's okay to dance with my glasses during class? Usually I just take them off but then I won't be able to really see when we learn something new.
@annabanana1177 жыл бұрын
bemysugarcookie I wear contacts, but when I was younger, before I had contacts, I would normally wear my glasses in class. In fact, sometimes I still do! Unless your studio has rules against it, I think it's fine to wear glasses during class. Just maybe not at auditions because the judges will think you need them to dance, which may lead them to not choosing you. As for performances and competitions, it depends on what you want and what your studio wants. Also, I think it's fine to wear them at conventions. Although, I personally find it harder to spot your turns while wearing glasses. Hope this helped!
