Thanks for your comment. There can be several causes for catalysts to degrade in the way you described. This could be due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, thermal stresses, or undesired reactions between the catalyst support and species in the process stream that can change the mechanical properties of the catalyst support, e.g. making it brittle or weak. It is possible that sulphur could be involved in these undesired reactions and it can also deactivate some catalysts through a mechanism called "poisoning".
