Advanced Ear-Hair Plucking - Major Ear Hair on a Standard Poodle - Gina's Grooming

Des, the Phantom Standard Poodle, has some major ear hair! We need to get this out to keep his ear healthy and clean (and this is veterinary recommended in his case.) Remember, not all dogs should get their ear-hair pulled or plucked! But for those that need it, we need to get it done. It's not easy, but we are going to take it slow and make sure that we clean out Des' ear canal from all that excess hair and debris. I try so hard to keep my doodles ear hair in check because if I don’t she gets an ear infection. Then I catch it from the vet. The vet is very caring and passionate. However my doodle doesn’t want to cooperate with but one groomer and she doesn’t groom anymore. It’s an every four week battle. It’s a real struggle.

Does it hurt? I cut my dog's hair cause he always scratching. I want to pull but he acts to sensitive ànd scares me

Hi Margaret, plucking ear hair should not hurt under normal circumstances, but not every dog and breed needs their ear hair plucked. What kind of a dog do you have? In terms of the plucking you see done in this video, this is under veterinary direction, so I am going more intense than you would normally need to do. But if your pup is scratching, there may be some hair in the canal that is bothering him - or it can be something else, like irritation or other debris in the canal, or even allergies. If he keeps scratching, I would definitely ask your vet next time you see them. It may be something else entirely. Hope that helps and thanks for your comment! 😍

I do think it part of allergies cause he does have it and what the doctor gave him don't work .I can't keep spending so much money on prescription that are expensive. so I been try everything to heal his itching even home remedies to probiotic and still not working.

Most vets won’t do ear hair plucking etc. they feel it is to be left for groomers. Often times vets won’t even look in the ears unless specific symptoms such as scratching or head shaking. They will advise the owner to take the dog to have the groomer to have the ears cleaned, and only then will they look at them

Hi Tahira, I am so glad you are concerned - we all should be. Ear hair plucking is not for all breeds, but for some dogs, your veterinarian will recommend keeping the canal free of hair to prevent ear infections - which are VERY painful. If done right for the right dog and for the right reasons, it is not painful and helps prevent serious problems. If you have any questions about your dog, ask your vet! Thanks for your comment!

For most poodles and doodles it's required. I have two standard poodles. One has very fine hair and I don't need to do hers as often but I do need to keep it clean. The other poodle has a very coarse very curly hair in his ear who needs to be plucked every couple weeks or so. If you don't because poodle ears are so heavy and their hair can be really thick then they don't have the right ventilation into the ear and that leads to a moist warm environment where they can get an infection. Both of my dogs will lay down and let me do it it doesn't hurt them and I'm sure it actually feels better in the long run because they don't have that long curly hair deep down in their ear canal which is making them itch
