Six days of kayaking so far with the Sport. Each time better and smoother and faster...and again all I can say is I'm so glad I found you and your channel. Spot-on advice that steered me into kayaking bliss. Dropstitch floor the deck bag, the pumps, gloves, I even got the carbon paddles with the angled handgrips you showed, ....I've devoured your videos, enjoyed your videos, learned from your vides and have been inspired by you and your videos. Don't know if I'll ever get to Florida but if so my Stand Up Paddleboarding girlfriend and I will find you and I'll buy you a couple beers in happy gratitude. I already am a street bicyclist doing 50+ miles a week and now on the water getting a total workout and enjoying nature gliding by.... already thinking about my second AE kayak... THANK YOU AGAIN and AGAIN (Pssst I've shared these videos with friends looking to get Kayaks too)...Long May You Paddle Brother!

Received my AE Sport today, so excited, did lots of research on all inflatable Kayaks and decided this was the way to go. Set it up today in the living room for a trial and followed this video, how easy it was with your guidance. Did not get backbone as decided to see how I go first without it. Thank you so much, love all your videos on these kayaks.

tanyar9 Hi, I’m so happy you decided on AE as in my eyes they are the best inflatable kayaks out there. The Sport is so much fun you will enjoy it and before you decide on a backbone I would seriously consider the DS floor I have converted all (6) of my AE kayaks to the DS floor. Something to think about later. Enjoy and thank you for watching.

Thank you so much for this content! I really enjoy kayaking, but a hard sided kayak would not be possible for me to store or transport. I was searching the web for info re inflatable kayaks, reading reviews, etc. - and was getting pretty discouraged. Then I saw a photo of the Advanced Elements Sport kayak and immediately my interest was piqued - an inflatable kayak that doesn’t look like an inflatable kayak! Nearly every review I read for the Sport was a good one. I found one online for under $400 and impulsively bought it. Then I realized I need to buy a bunch of other equipment! I read in the comments to this video that you have a programmable air pump - may I ask what brand/model you have? Also, do you still use the Bending Branches fiberglass paddle? Again, Thanks so much for filming such a comprehensive review, I will be subscribing to your channel.
@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 2 жыл бұрын
The Bending Branches paddle is a good one. I now use a AE3025 4part carbon fiber paddle for the Sport. But when I take out the Elite the Bending Branches comes out. It pushes more water volume. The pump I use now is the Shark II that pump will be a little over kill for the Sport. The pump I used for a long time is the Sevylor SUP pump. But most importantly is the duel action pump with gauge as the pressures are critical. Thanks for subscribing and thanks for watching.

I am still testing with it on "dry land" and I managed to very neatly pack about 75 liters (35 traversal on the back, 18 behind the seat under the deck and another 18 longitudinal in the front with the quick draw 7L on top... ). Of course this is a very hard core scenario but ... any tips on the weight distribution for loading luggage on this boat? Does it prefer even, more front, more back ? It has the DS floor btw it that matters. And yeah, this is me trying to squeeze out every inch of space to avoid getting the awesome but significantly heavier expedition :)

Great reviews here. Thank you! I bought my first inflatable kayak over 30 years ago. Paid $65 at Academy and nobody at the Frio river had ever seen one. For years we would be the only ones to use inflatable kayaks. Everyone else was in tire tubes. After about 10 years, hard kayaks started showing up. Now almost everyone uses one there. I have heard some negative comments about keeping kayaks that have skins from mildewing. What are your experiences with it? Thanks again!

I( bought mine -and all my kayak gear based on your most excellent videos. Do you EVER have trouble folding it in fours after deflation? When I try to fold it down the front landing strip makes it too long to fold short enough to meet in the middle ..I have emails in to AE and hope to get an answer to what I could be doing wrong.
@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 5 жыл бұрын
The 1101 Experiment Yes, I did have some difficulty at first. Then I found a trick. When you have the forward and aft point meeting in the middle grab the bow fold and lift up and fold over the stern fold. The lifting up allows more room at the main fold and just lay it over the stern fold. That works for me as I had the same problem. I will make a video demonstration of it here in the next couple of days. Thanks for watching.

Excellent review. I'm trying to decide between this and the Innova Swing 1. How quick is this kayak on average? 2.5 mph, 3? Do you think it will handle sea conditions well? Does it dry quickly? Thank you :) Also, does it have room for a large drybag behind the seat? Do you estimate around 5-7 minutes from car to water?
@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 5 жыл бұрын
asfdestroyer My average speed w/backbone is around 3.8, With DS floor 3.4. I have used a 20L drybag behind the seat, but I’m short so my seat is more forward. So it would depend on your height. I found that a deck bag attached to the front d-rings works best for me. Set up depends. Normal setup is around 6 minutes. I also use a programmable airpump so my setup to water is pretty fast. Well if my morning coffee doesn’t slow me down. Which ever you decide just have fun with it. I know of my 6 AE inflatables the Sport is my favorite. Thanks for watching.

You said that when you get home you will take the kayak out of the bag to dry it out. Is this something you do with all of your inflatables or just the AE kayaks. I'm asking because I just saw another review of inflatables and the guy owned an AE and complained that over time they wind up cruddy on the inside from the difficulty in getting them dry. Has this been your experience? What is your drying procedure? I live in a small apartment and just don't have the room to air dry an inflatable.

With the exception of the AirVolution drying time is required. I have 4 different AE yaks and 2 AirVolution’s the 4 are all 4+ years old and they look pretty much new. I kayak a lot. But I treat all of them, except the AirVolution’s with 303 fabric guard. This reduces the drying time significantly. But drying time is required for all AE yaks excluding the AirVolution.

Hi Karin, the Sport tracks well with the stock floor. Instead of the backbone I would recommend a dropstich floor. I have converted all my AE yaks to dropstich floors. Way more rigidity. Depending upon how often you go out will tell if the stock floor is okay for you. Now I kayak a lot and now would not have any of my AE yaks without the dropstich floor. The Sport does not require a cart unless there is a pretty good distance from the launch. I normally just lift it to my shoulder and walk down to the launch. But the cart is always with me as many times I don’t know where a particular launch in my reviews. Hope that helps.

Eric Orton the Lagoon has a foam floor a very stubby aft. At 8’5” it’s control is difficult. For a very short paddle it’s okay. For paddling 5miles or more will be a challenge. The Sport is far superior in handling, tracking and comfort. I’ve taken my sport on paddles of over 12 miles and except for a numb ass it was fabulous. I would in no way attempt that with the Lagoon 1.
@boldyo
@boldyo 4 жыл бұрын
@@DaleMrDSimmons Thanks! I am new to kayaking and there is a small but beautiful reservoir less than a mile across just a few miles from my house(Arvada, Co) that I am drawn to. I am assuming the Lagoon would be fine for that. I am 5' 8" and 135 lbs. and a former bike racer, runner, and wrestler but NOT a good swimmer and hence always been a little cautious when it comes to the water. From your reviews the Lagoon looks a little easier/quicker to set up than the sport. I think it's my water cautious side that leans toward the Lagoon and staying in the nearby reservoir but my more athletic side says get the sport and eventually drive up to Gross Dam Reservoir in the mountains and do longer paddles and where conditions can get more treacherous. Any ideas?
@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 4 жыл бұрын
Eric Orton now with that information, I would definitely go with the sport. If you are new to kayaking, the Lagoon 1 will frustrate you. You watched my on it and my biggest complaint is the amount of yaw from paddling it. I had to modify my Paddling technique a lot to get it controlled. If it’s a budget issue the Lagoon 1 will work if you’re only going to do short paddles. I’ve had my Sport on the Gulf, the Atlantic many rivers and lakes and only got in trouble once. That time it was operator error. I went out when there was a small craft advisory and I was testing the Rapid Up Sail. It got me back okay but it got swamped when I got out on shore and the shore waves crashed over it and filled it with water. Check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIm2cnWelq5rpqc

Eric Orton The DSXL will give you 5” more in length, inflatable combing, a different main chamber system and comes with forward and aft zippers. The forward zippers really help with getting in and out. Now the Sport is an awesome craft and I used it a lot before I got the DSXL. It’s now a toss up between the two as there is no difference in handling however, the DSXL weighs 9 lbs more than the Sport. To me it’s a Tie. I love my Sport due to its weight. When I got mine it didn’t come with the DS so I started with the Backbone but soon went to the DS. I have had well over 100 adventures in my Sport (it’s now 4 years old) and it’s still going strong. So to answer your question, it’s really based on your weight and height. To me it’s a toss up.

can one add a rudder to this model? And what model of wheels do you use...those are great! What weight capacity is it and how long? Looks like that is perfect for first timers:)
@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 6 жыл бұрын
Yes you can but I feel it would be a waste of money. This model really tracks and performs very well as it is. It is 10'5" weight 26lbs with a weight capacity of 250lbs. I would recommend the rudder kit for the longer kayaks like the Expedition EX. I installed the rudder kit on that one. But the Sport does not need one. I own 7 kayaks from 16 ft to 10'5" and the Sport is my favorite. The one you see in the video has been on over 300 paddles and is three years old. Depending what you want to do in kayaking this is a fabulous kayak. It is only rated for Class I and II only. This is far from a beginners kayak as I have seen in my travels many experienced kayakers (like myself) who love this kayak and continue to use the Sport as their go-to kayak. The Cart Wheels are ABN Universal Kayak Carrier which can be found on Amazon. However, it only comes with one strap. I would recommend getting a second strap as I have done as the tie down performance of the cart is greatly improved. I hope that answers your questions. Thanks for watching.

Air does tend to deflate no matter what we do!LOL You do great reviews so want to buy one as I love the less space to store it. Thank you for you fast reply. I need one that would have 300 lbs cap, as I am a larger lady and take stuff with me as well. What do you recommend? Would the sport one still be OK? Love your information, and am looking into this for storage reasons too:) They are not as cheap here in Canada, about double the cost...so want to make a good choice. I loved that stabilisation bar in the one kayak version...that makes total sense and adds stability. I also love the aluminium design on bow and stern, again, for stability and shape! Thanks for doing HONEST reviews...really helps us out here:)

Dale Mr. D Simmons what about the new advanced frame DS XLC model? I liked the idea of the zip out cockpit for extra room, or zip it back on for cooler weather and skirt.? Seems to have great capacity and I prefer sit in vrs on top.

Which is better of guys , the point 65 Mercury or this one?
@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 6 жыл бұрын
Heer Ollie Well I think we’re mixing apples and oranges here. The 65 weight is 55lbs the Sport 26lbs. The 65 is 14’ vs the sport of 10.5. Then there is a $700 price difference. So now that the obvious is out of the way let’s look at this. The first question is; what are you going to use it for? I have no experience with a modular kayak, personally it makes no sense to me with the inflatable market where it is today especially the Advanced Elements company. I have researched and reviewed other inflatable companies products and I must admit AE is the best out there. So I guess it’s down to your personal preference. I own 6 inflatables and 2 hard kayaks. All 6 are Advanced Elements. I kayak about 4 times a week all over Florida lakes, rivers, channels and both the Atlantic and the Gulf most of these are done with the Sport.

Dale. Wife and I are seniors of 68 and 70. Will be using kayaking on a lake. We love the sport kayak. Can u give me a estimate price including the need and nice to need list I was thinking $1500 per kayak. Is that close thanks tim

Tim Miller I’m 70 so here is what I would recommend www.airkayaks.com/advanced-elements-advancedframe-ds-xl-series-kayak-ae1044ds-xl/ The total will be around $1400 for the two of them. All you will need is paddles and PFD’s and you will be all set. Scroll down to the bottom of that page and you will see the reviews I did for them.

@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 6 жыл бұрын
Rolando Perez Hi, On the AdvancedFrame line of products the Sport and Ultralight do not have inflatable combing. Inflatable combing is on the AE1012, AE1009 and AE1007 of the AdvancedFrame line. Thanks for watching.

I have a question about how well the sport would do in a bay situation. I’m considering the sport and ds-xl. I will occasionally have a 5 lb chihuahua with me. Thanks

The 1101 Experiment thanks. From what I understand the bay is very protected...like a large lake
@DaleMrDSimmons
@DaleMrDSimmons 4 жыл бұрын
pashnit Well I don’t see a real problem. I would recommend the AE1044DSXLC as that extra 5” in length and the ability to make it a Convertible top will give you a little more room for your Chihuahua. Like “Experiment 1101” high winds and chop would make it not fun, but it is rated for class II. Thanks for watching.
