Hi Alex. Great video for ESL users like mysef! I've recently learned about criticism surrounding the use of adjectives as nouns when referring to certain groups of people. This comes from the idea that language should be person-centered, which avoids forming the identity of people around their condition. For example, "people with mental illnesses" should be used instead of "the mentally ill". I was wondering if you know more about this shift in language preferences, and whether this also applies to "the poor" or " the unemployed", or to stereotypically positive adjectives like "the rich". I've been trying to find information about this, but I haven't found a lot of useful information, maybe because I ignore the right key words to find this kind of information! Would it be possible to get some help from you? Maybe if you could reply to this comment with some ideas of key words to google this topic haha. Thank you again!

Hi Alex, Thanks for the videos that you filmed for us, the English beginners. Could you please help me to correct the two conversations below? Thanks a lot. 1. A: I heard that Hannah had set you up a man two days ago. So when do I get to meet the guy? B: come on, we have just met. There's nothing between us at all, I'll let you meet him if the time is right,okay? 2. A: I heard that Hannah had set you up a man two days ago. So when do I get to meet the guy? B: I'll see how is goes.

Hey Alex, interesting video! From what I understand, we can either say 'The rich pay lower taxes than the poor.' OR 'Rich people pay lower taxes than poor people. (Am I right?) This happens because we are talking about these social groups in general. Question: What if we want to talk about these social groups in a specific place, can we say: 'The rich people in my country pay lower taxes than the poor people.' ? Or should we again use the pattern you are talking about and say: The rich in my country pay lower taxes than the poor.' By adding 'in my country' I feel that the context becomes more specific and that's why I feel tempted to say 'the rich people''. I hope my question is clear. Thanks! Greetings from Athens, Greece!

Firstly thankyou for all your teaching, I have a question about the using of the in countries. You said we can use "the" in other or general countries but I heard that we use Russans not the Russans , Indians, Italians and etc
@AdSoyad-gh3ol5 жыл бұрын
I'll be glad if you can help us about solving the confusion , do you have any idea about it
@engvidAlex5 жыл бұрын
For countries, there are some general rules about using "the" when the country has a political element to its name, or if it's a group of islands. This doesn't always work, but it does in many cases. For example, the United States, the Democratic People's Republic of China, the United Arab Emirates, the Caribbean islands, the Bahamas, etc. For nationalities, if you're talking in a general sense, it varies and depends on the nationality. The basic rule you can use is IF the name of the language and the name of the nationality are the same, you use "the." If they're different, you DON'T need "the." Here are some examples: Canadians need to be prepared for winter. ("Canadian" is not a language) The French typically like cheese. ("French" is a language, and you can't say "Frenches") Russians live in Russia. ("Russian" is a language and you can say "Russians") This is NOT a rule that works all the time, though! It's almost as annoying as things being masculine and feminine in French.

It depends who you are refering to if it's a man or a singular noun would be 'is' and if it's plural then the 'are'. The rich (countries for example) are more developed

I have a question. If I'm talking about a group of people where they all lack something, is it correct to refer to them as the incomplete? It's not about a social group that's known, but more about a small team of people that share similarities and one of those is that they are incomplete. Should the incomplete ones be more correct? The incompletes? I've been trying to find this online and I get lots of contradicting stuff. Thank you.

@engvidAlex5 жыл бұрын
Be careful when using "the" before comparatives. :) It's typically not done. "The faster runner will win!" is okay, but you can't say "He's the faster than his father." The correct form of that sentence is "He's faster than his father." But I think you were making a joke, so I'll stop commenting now. :)

Is it one of the innocent or one of the innocents
@engvidAlex5 жыл бұрын
Good question! If you're using adjectives as nouns, you have to remember that adjectives are never plural, so the correct form is "One of the innocent/dead/poor/etc." However, "innocent" is ALSO a noun ("She's an innocent."), so you actually say "One of the innocents" as well. For nouns, you need to use the plural with "one of," such as "one of the people/reasons/questions/etc." I hope this helps!
