When I was a kid in ninth grade, I already knew what I want to do when I grew up. My childhood was unhappy, I didn’t have love from my parents because they were divorced. I grew up with my grandmother, who was very strict and harsh. I wanted to help children who have problems with behavior like me. I decided to become a police officer and work with children. When I graduated from high school, I wasn’t admitted to the Police Academy, so I went to a regular police school where I studied for one year. When I was nineteen, I started working at a police station. later had the opportunity to work with children who have problems with education, behavior, and exploitation. Now I have chosen to be at home, I am retired.

I don’t know how can I improve my English by listening your story! Can you tell me?
@LovelyEnglishStories
@LovelyEnglishStories 2 жыл бұрын
The best way is to make a note of any words you don't know, look them up, then listen to the stories again so you can understand how to use the word, phrase, or idiom is context :) Listening to these also helps with understanding British English.

I have again a question to this text - 5min 33s - when they start work - but to start and to work are verbs, so between it we have to put TO, or I am in the wrong?
@LovelyEnglishStories
@LovelyEnglishStories 2 жыл бұрын
No, you don’t always need to put ‘to’. You will hear this idiomatic phrase a lot in British English (and in American English) Some examples: When do you start work? // Oh I start work at 6. // I’ll start work at 12 tomorrow. // They start work at 9. In this case work is meant as their (graduates) first professional job. If we were to say “they start to work” we are assuming they haven’t had a job before, but if we say start work, in this case and in this context, it refers to their first proper professional job. Hope this helps!
