Don't listen to these people who say you should only speak French. You explain in both languages and get the balance perfect. Great job!
@LanguageCity

Merci MrBeatles. I think they don't understand the purpose of these videos. I keep telling them that for immersion, they can watch a movie and that the goal is for me to teach very specific structures, expressions & words, and that many can benefit from this as long as I explain in English too, but they assume advanced students should understand everything in French which is not the case... but well, merci :)

I totally agree with the language mix for something as complex as idiomatic expressions OR particularly French versions of English phrases. The expressions and their structure and usage of alternative verbs from the English version is difficult enough without the added complexity of the explanation being in French too.

Totally agree! It's just the right balance of adding in some English. It's the best way to learn for me. When teachers only speak 100% French, I get lost and fall behind.
@LanguageCity
@LanguageCity 7 жыл бұрын
That's what I think. There are so many different kinds of learners. As I always say, I've had students who know French grammar by heart and have plenty of vocabulary, but they have a terrible ear for languages, so they can hardly understand anything. Since there are very specific things I want to teach and my goal is not to give you an immersion experience, then I think it doesn't matter much whether I speak French or English. My speaking English allows more people to understand the lesson.

Mr. Alexandre de Chambure, Speaking for myself, the method you teach French is perfect. Mix of English and French as you teach is a must for me or I will miss to much context and even the little Spanish you teach reassure me even more.

I have no idea why anyone would say that you should never speak any English. That point of view makes zero sense to me. I absolutely love your system -- the way that you teach is exactly the way I have always wanted someone to teach me. So, thank you so much for your amazing work! This is the best method of learning French I have ever come across in my life. I took French in high school and minored in French in college and your method is far superior. I always wondered, why do so many people teach French in a way that you can't even use in conversation in everyday life?Your methods are better than anyone else on YT as well in my opinion. Merci!!
@LanguageCity
@LanguageCity 7 жыл бұрын
Merci Juliana. Well, I think that most people go to college and learn what others have done before with all their flaws or imperfections. They simply replicate what they have learned without taking a step back to think critically about they have learned. Yet there is such a gap between what you learn in books and French as it is spoken by the French (conversational French). There are so many huge mistakes in books that apparently go unnoticed. I think that overall, what you learn in college or in other method will allow you to get your point across, to some extent, but you will hardly understand anything the French say. Then again, I always say that anything you learn is good, but... anyway, I'm glad you like this channel :)

Superbly taught, and the balance of French/English is right, esp when you're contrasting English/French usage. Excellent teaching of "n'importe quoi" - no amount of searching in dictionaries would show how this is really used. Lucid, accurate teaching of what the French actually say. Thank you!

Hi thank you so much for these awesome lessons. Je les adore parce ce qu'ils sont super utiles et uniques. J'ai une question sur le mot "ennuyeux". Quand est-il ok d'utiliser ennuyant vs. ennuyeux pour decrire quelque chose? Aussi, pour le numero 9 - faut-il utiliser le futur proche ou peut-on dire aussi "tu ne gagneras jamais" - futur simple? Une question de plus: j'entends souvent "annees" vs "ans". What's with that & when should I use which?
@LanguageCity
@LanguageCity 2 жыл бұрын
Merci Teresa :) So "ennuyant" is plain wrong even though it's a mistake too many people make (including my dad...). "an" vs" année" is very much like "jour" vs "journée": "an" is a random year while "année" describes the entire year in question. Plus you have to memorize the idiomatic uses for each: "chaque année", but "tous les ans", "bonne année!", etc... In this case (#9), using the future would work too!

I love the expression: causes toujours, tu m'interesses to imply the person is boring. Also the phrase: il s'ecoute parler. Will you be doing more idiomatic expressions as I feel once one reaches a pretty advanced level in any language, it's always the idiomatismes, locutions and expressions that make all the difference? Great video, as usual.

Hi there, this is great! Thanks! I want to know if “chiant” is scatological or crude or in bad taste since it derives from “chier”.

Let me put it this way: it's slang, but everyone uses it among family & friends. It's probably the most common slang word people naturally use. If unsure, use "embêtant" for "annoying", and "ennuyeux" for boring :)

Don't listen to the 'haters'. If i want to get French-only input i won't watch French learning videos because that would be pointless. I would just go watch Studio Bagel or something instead. Those people should do the same.

The biggest problem with learning a language is you don't know if what you are learning is actually used by natives. You fix that problem. Along with a guy on here called 'Fred Grün' you are the only person on the internet teaching proper spoken French. I notice when anglophones use French, even correct French, it's anglicised. So it will be quite easy to read in translation word for word, whereas if you watch say a Facebook conversation between two French people they tend to use a lot more expression, idiom and reflexive verbs than an anglophone learner would. I mean look at this sentence taken from a Facebook group, written by a native from Paris: " Tout ce que je vois de l adaptation de l EN c est de se caler sur ce qu'ils font ils ne s'adaptent pas ils demandent à se que l'on s'adapte à eux." No English speaker would *ever* formulate that in that way.

Pour ta deuxième question, l'adjectif "chiant" a deux sens: "boring as hell" "a pain in the ass" (a person or a situation). "Ça fait chier!" means "It's so f... annoying!"

The ratio of French to English seems exactly right for me. Perhaps those who gripe about too much English have no further need of lessons!
@LanguageCity
@LanguageCity 5 жыл бұрын
I would agree. You know, I always tell those who say I speak too much English that my goal is not to put them in immersion. They can watch a movie or French television online for that. My goal is to teach very specific structures, idiomatic expressions & vocabulary. Based on my experience, 80% will miss out on my explanations if I give them in French.

Bonjour! I was wondering if you could clarify the usage of "ne ... que" to mean "only"? I'm having a tough time with that one! When I see the use of "ne" it automatically makes me think a "pas" will be used. These lessons are so helpful, I've been watching them over and over and memorizing :)
@LanguageCity
@LanguageCity 7 жыл бұрын
Bonjour Juliana, as you said, ne + verb + que means "only". Remember that you will find "ne" with other words than "pas". The lessons on the "negative expressions" used in the present tense are in our French II course, and the negative expressions used in passé composé are in the French III course. I'm glad you like all these videos :)

Bonjour! Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo! J'ai beaucoup appris avec elle. J'ai une doute sur la phrase 9. Elle est sous la forme négative: ne/que. Alors, l'article ne devrait pas être "de"? "Si tu ne choisis que de chiffres pairs"?.
@LanguageCity
@LanguageCity 7 жыл бұрын
Merci Felipe :) On met toujours "ne...que" parmi les "formes négatives", mais il n'y a absolument rien de négatif dans "ne...que". Ça veut principalement dire "seulement", donc pas de raison de transformer le "des" en "de".
