I have to agree on Q35. Been using i440fx on my 1950x and 1080ti. More performance using Q35, not only gaming and on encoding as well. Even I used the 2 die (28 cores+HT) it performs really well. BTW thanks for the tutorials, only a week I built my own Unraid server. I can't build that without this channel and here I am again learned something new with multifunction etc. Nice channel.

Very cool Instuctional, gave me the know how to start tinkering with my xml. shortly after that I figured out my solution (which was for my Xeon onboard graphics). I actually had to turn off the multifunction and not use the attached audio or else the videocard wouldn't work. Either way so happy to finally be up and transcoding with my video card now. Since I'm editing the underlying XML configuration file by hand (still learning plus I don't have any window manager on my server installation so that I can use the only one GPU I have for the VM) I actually completely missed the second element so 1)it was really useful to see that it is actually present and what it is for and 2)understand the possible conflicts one might encounter if using tools for automatic device configuration (like in your case). Thanks Spaceinvader! I've installed my gtx1660 super card today and got it working through this video and your earlier ones on installing the Windows VM. I needed to pull one extra trick to avoid the error messages upon trying to start the VM. My card had 2 extra devices in its IOMMU group: an NVIDIA serial bus and USB Controller. As these were apparently on the physical card, I've added these to the Syslinux configuration and then added them in the VM template as ' other pic devices'.

I did eventually find this solution (multifunction) online but I had no idea how/why it worked. And also that editing the UI and saving regenerates a new XML file so you lose all changes that dont map to the UI (seriously Unraid, maybe compare both files and tell me or at least show a warning?) But I would have saved so much time and frustration if I just watched this video lol. I gotta learn to do a bit more research before jumping in. However, there IS something I found out that was only partially mentioned in the video. You're correct in that if you don't need UEFI you should disable it, but I find out one specific feature was causing my Error 43's: Above 4G Decoding and ReBAR. After going into my bios and turning those off, my error 43's disappeared and I'm booting UEFI. But yeah best practice is just to do legacy Good shoutout on the vBios too. Even though I was using an AMD card (5700 XT) as my only GPU, I needed to pass the vBios through for the GPU to actually hand off successfully to the VM and back to unraid. Otherwise I'd get no video output upon starting the VM as the VM takes the GPU from Unraid but can't use it. I think you mentioned in a later vid that you need to pass the vBios through from Navi and newer. I did try to dumper script you mentioned in another video, but my GPU was primary and it didnt like me. Luckily, the GPU I bought had had a corrupted bios so I already had the exact bios file downloaded and flashed onto the card via an AM3+ board with a built in GPU lol, so I just put that file into the iso share and passed it in.

For any ryzen users. I've recently had a "Unknown pci header type '127' ". After a fresh start of the server the graphics card can be used to start the VM, but no video output will be displayed. The VM also can't start correctly and needs to be forced to shutdown. Upon restarting the vm the "Unknown pci header type '127' " will appear until the next server restart. This issue seems to be a problem with the recent ryzen motherboard bios supporting the 3000 series of cpus. Downgrade the motherboard bios far enough and the error should dissapear.

I tried to add the bios rom from tech powered up for my GPU but when I start the VM I get no picture so I had to remove the rom. Thanks for the tip about multifunction devices on the same bus. I have the worst issue right now with Ryzen 9 3900x and getting it to work with an x570 Taichi. I dove a little bit into some reddit and Unraid forums and I never really saw any answers to this besides it could be the version (Kernel: Linux 4.19.107-Unraid x86_64) of Unraid Linux kernel being used and something to do with the agesea of the mother board? not sure if all of that sounds right but just curious if this is something you or anyone else ran into and can offer experience and steps to take. I was using the Nvidia sound for awhile but it gave me nothing but pops and clicks with my music production stuff so I decided to get an audio interface dedicated to the Win10 VM and has been working like a charm since.

Something I noticed - at least on Ubuntu Server 20.04 I get an error from the XML "No type specified for device address". It seems that specifying the type of the device "" is not enough (at least on newer versions of libvirt) and you have to add the type of the device to the address element as well.

I was ready to give up..... I dumped the vbios, I used a TechPowerUp edited vbios, fixed the slots in XML, switched the legacy mode, tried every combination that I could try in the VM setup, manually passed through the video card, used the new 6.9.2 pass through, reinstalled the VM about 15 times for each of these, and BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH. Today I finally tried something new - based on an issue that had nothing to do with unraid, and more to do with me farting around in the actual bare metal bios. I was trying to mess with disabling the onboard video, and then all of a sudden after a few boots IT STARTED WORKING. Here's the dumb-as-hell solution that made it work: I plugged a flipping monitor into the physical GTX 1080. If I unplug the monitor, instantly stops working. Anyone know if I can emulate a plugged in monitor? I hate that I have to sacrifice a monitor to use the video card in a VM.

I could do with someones help with my RX 570 with passthrough... My build is a; AsusTek TUF B450-Gaming Plus MB with latest BIOS update in mid December 2019 AMD 3700X Processor ASUS Strix RX 570 4GB Graphics card 2x 8GB Crosair 2666Mhz RAM 2x Sata 512GB SSD 3x 3TB Spinny 3.5 hard drives I am running Unraid 6.8.1 However when it comes to VM's like Windows 10 and OSX, I cannot get my AMD ASUS RX570 to passthrough to the VM. I have tried the list of things below but no matter I do I get the spinning red arrows when I start either VM and then the whole of UNRAID crashes and I have to hard reboot the whole server. Can anyone help in what I can do. 1. Downloaded the TechPowerup VBIOS for the GPU here and then dropped in in the XML as per spaceinvader One with a Nvidia card but this is a AMD card www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/197590/asus-rx570-4096-170406 2. Turned on ACS on VM settings to 'Downstream' 3. this used to work great, however I just tried it with a win11 vm and win10 vm, when I add the multifunction='on' and change them to matching bus/slot, the vm will no longer initialize display, I tried to reset it by switching back to vnc, same thing. I had to delete the vm and create a new one using the existing disk to recover it. What gives?

I'm wondering if you've ever had to deal with an AMD gpu that produces the "unknown pci header type 127" error. Most posts I've found only seem to have this problem after shutting a VM down, but I'm encountering it at the VM startup. Specifically, I'm trying to use an r9 390x in an unraid 6.8.3 to be used for gpu transcoding. The guest vm is ubunbtu 18.04. The host machine is a 2700x on an x470 Taichi. no need to add the "multifunction='on'" just edit the bus and slot for audio to be the same as graphics and function should be +1 so '0x1' for audio, unraid will ad the "multifunction='on'"

@@drugdoctor1 I can tell you I think I can answer a little part of your add on questions... IF unraid needs a gfx card, youd tell it which one to use based on your bios settings of primary graphics selection.

Yep you can use both the cards. One for one VM and one for another. I have a Ryzen system with a 1080ti and an rx570 and use both at once with the 2 gpus.

I've got Catalina as my daily machine with 1 vega fe, and sometimes (I think) I've been able to configure my windows 10 vm with the other vega fe, but certainly I haven't got picture to come through the card for windows yet. Do I need to stub the sys linux config with the gpu? I wouldn't think so since it's already appearing as an available device. I have acs downstream enabled. Just wondering what I'm missing. I look forward to running both at the same time with vega graphics. Macos for everything except CAD on windows.

Great video! Unfortunately, I need getting this error when I start my VM with GPU pass-through - "internal error: Unknown PCI header type '127'" Any ideas what might be causing this? I'm trying to pass-through a GT 710 and my CPU is the Ryzen 2700x. I have tried passing the card through on many different VMs, all resulting in the same errors. I have confirmed that all virtualization settings are enabled on the mobo bios. Please let me know!

Hi Milo. yes I would guess your bios on the motherboard is a new bios that came out to support the ryzen 3000 series. unfortunately, this breaks passthrough. the only way to fix it really is to downgrade the bios on the motherboard. My XML for Catalina and Win 10 both have the GPU and Audio on different buses instead of slots, any idea what should I do here? 0x04 and 0x05 for Bus, 0x00 for Slot. This is an AMD RX580, before the edits it would show as a audio device in Windows but nothing would play out, now no device shows.

In case anyone has similar trouble my system is magically working. For Catalina I did the tweaks but it only worked after updated to 15.2 For Windows I updated to Unraid 6.8.1, Created a new VM with Qemu 4.2, and no xml tweaks, and somehow everything is working!

Yes I would pass through all hardware on the gpu. Copy the same way as it is connected to the host. So if usb is on same slot copy the same function number etc when mapped to the vm

@@SpaceinvaderOne Thanks Space One. To note, I have found that the original ROM downloaded from TechPowerUp was the only ROM that was able to boot my VM. I know...strange but even when edited, it didn't work (also extract). The original ROM from TPU works...sure someone can confirm why...maybe different with the 1660? Whilst I think your tips are excellent, please note that the Error 43 can also be caused by other issues. In my case, it was a PSU deficiency issue. I would strongly suggest all Unraid users to check their PSU needs; especially in the case where you are not replacing a GPU, but adding a new one. I found that my 1660 Super in my ML350p Gen 8 server requires more PSU power (especially seeing I have the 1060 set for encoding). In terms of servers, make sure you check your PSU requirements with the manufacture. I'll need to upgrade my PSUs as, when I powered the new 1660 Super via a sep PSU, the error 43 went away. Ensure you check your PSU! Taken 3 days of constant time of mine. :-) Great stuff Spaceinvader One. So good, so clear. Keep it up!

I have a GTX1050 that puts the GPU and AUDIO on separate bare metal busses. No matter the configuration I can never get the audio to pass. Sometimes the VM won't throw a Code 43 and sometimes it will. It always fails to pass the audio with a no permission error.

Lots of good stuff here but UEFI is crucial to full compatibility for PCI passthrough. I can't agree with this advice unless you have legacy hardware. I built full UEFI specifically to be compliant with Intel's spec.

Hi there. Yes you can use the same GPU with different VMs , so long as they are not running at the same time.

@@chrysenxciii7102 this was put into Unraid in an early 6.8 rc. I think rc 2. But later was taken out as some users had issues with it.
