Advanced Monaco Diesel RV Battery Troubleshooting

Here's a quick video showing a few uncommon electrical problems unique to Monaco Highline Diesel motorhomes from 2004 to 2009.
I try my best to explain the intellitec "Big Boy" relay and "BCC/BIRD" found in the engine compartment and a few tricks I've learned.
Hope it helps, also I only shorted my lead to ground....it's very difficult to hold a camera and use a 30year old multimeter with leads I should probably replace too.

I had trouble with mine last year and it took me 2 days of fiddling around. Called the manufacture and spoke to the old Engr who was involved in making the unit, told me to check 2 simple things, and each one indicated what was bad. Ordered the part after confirming what was not working........wal-la..........It worked. Things are simple when you know the steps to do.

knowing how its suppose to work is very useful, but Monaco has made it impossible on these oder units now....they don't know much about them.

I see this is an old post but hope this reaches you. I have a 1996 Monaco Dynasty. My problem is when hooked up to shore power the internal battery charger over charges the lipo batteries. I am wondering if there is a way to reduce the output of this charger. I was considering putting on a shut off switch to disconnect the battery from the system while plugged in. This just defeats the purpose of the system for keeping house batteries charged. I have been looking for the charging unit on the coach but not sure what it looks like. Tracing the lines I can find some units that look like they may be the charger. It has the heart interface ems 1800-12 battery charging system. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Kevin

how many amps does it take to hold-in that relay? just what you need when your batteries are low is more load. That is why a latching relay would be better.

Late question.. 2004 Monaco Windsor. Driving down the road the alternator changes both sets of batteries. But at night with the lights on(also towing vehicle) it only charges chassis. Thinking there’s to much voltage/amps needed for the chassis to change both. One thing came to mind, change lights to led to pull less voltage?

That is a large voltage drop if the running and headlights cause the isolator to drop the house batteries. Maybe switch to LEDs but that doesn't seem right to me. All those lights should only draw maybe 15amps?

Thanks for video. Question: I have 1998 Monaco Windsor, generator is not charging house or engine batteries...First it stopped charing engine battery, then a few weeks later, it stop charging house batteries...any ideas brother? bad ground or loose wire, solenoid? inverter?

Your generation of Monaco should have a blue charging isolator which charges both batteries from the engine. Next to it should be a small green looking isolator which charges the chassis battery when the house is charging. However, the generator only provides shore 120vac power and the inverter should be charging the house. I'd start with the inverter and make sure it's charging the house. It should be wired directly to the house batteries with a 300amp fuse somewhere in between. Good luck.

@@AZExpert I think I found the issue....the Green Isolator. It appears that the center pole (white negative) has no ground, no activity. Question: where does that white negative wire go to? back to inverter? or grounding strip somewhere? I traced as far back as i could go..zip..its inside large tubing. I just don't want to ground that pole and affect something else on the inverter. I figured i'd ask you first since you've got lots more experience than I do :)

@@AstrologerJoe it just goes to chassis ground. Obviously battery ground is best but you should find a grounding bus bar around it somewhere

Your liberal use of splicing several colored wires to make one wire confuses me.

Rather than solder a lead to the board as the plugs were different on the new board, I found a 2 pin molex harness that fit, it had a yellow wire on the pin connector which was crimped on, I guess I could have painted it to match, but the color was not important, merely the molex connector.
