We need to ask ourselves why anybody should truly need 60+ publications for admission to med school or residency.
@butterflies.and.sunshine4 ай бұрын
They don't, if you look into Charting Outcomes, that is well beyond the average for matching even the most competitive specialty. Plus, it seems like Kevin published most of his research papers while in residency, which makes sense. I wish there had been some context to this other than throwing out gigantic numbers to impressionable students.

Definitely not necessary, and you don't have to do 60+, but having a good research foundation will help you stand out and become a more competitive applicant, regardless of the specialty you apply to

This shows how much the whole system has gone to shit with people just playing the numbers game with meaningless publications. I’m glad I’m sticking with primary care so I can actually focus on meaningful experiences

Cheers to that. Medicine has way more than enough stat and ego driven folks gunning for the most prestigious specialty they can associate their name with. We need more primary care physicians.

Completely agree, unfortunately research is largely a game and is about quantity over quality, not about truly pushing forward the science. We cover this unfortunate reality during the course as well and how to best navigate the "game" of research for med school and residency applications

Dr. Jubal, I am not in med school (my nephew and his fiancée are) and out of curiosity I started to watch videos related to medicine. The first time I saw Med School Insiders I was intrigued by your narration, which is so professional and clear. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!

I used to be a suicide and crisis counselor for two years and the idea of death was a recurring theme every week. One of the most profound books that allowed me to see the light in suffering and death was shined upon by Viktor frankl’s book called “man’s search for meaning.”

Quantity > quality is the game and I think Kevin knows it. what a shame
@kevinjubbalmd3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that's the current state of applications for med school and residency. Until things change, we're going to help students play the game and succeed within it

It's not even medicine that is filled with useless pubs. The publish or perish mentality runs all of academy

True that

As a non trad who’s self studying and soon taking online classes, how can one find research opportunities ?? 😩
@rerect4 ай бұрын
Hello! As a working non trad myself, I highly suggest that you actively look for online research opportunities. Many come along in the summer. Also, most research labs (at Universities and Community Colleges) only require 10-15 hours a week to join their lab. If you can make that happen, be sure to view the profiles of Professors at your school. If they have a research lab and it interests you, email them.

Try not to take online prerequisite courses. Most med schools frown on that.
