Years ago I tested "near native" on the Department of Defense Spanish test. My Spanish has only gotten better. Much more recently, a Spanish man told me he hoped that one day his English would be as good as my Spanish! I was very proud of myself and couldn't have been happier. After more than 50 years of study, living or working in Mexico, Spain, and Puerto Rico, I do all right. Nonetheless, because there is vocabulary you have simply not needed to know, there will be times when it feels like you still have a long way to go. Thanks to Gordon, Cynthia, and a handful of other KZbin Spanish teachers I watch, I get regular refreshers and still learn new things. Regards from Indiana!

I have worked for years, trying to pass B1 level tests. I always do poorly. But I understood almost 100% of this video. Which was very pleasing. I think everyone needs to know that things like Rosetta Stone and Duo Lingo are selling false promises and that learning Spanish is like filling a 5 gallon bucket with an eye dropper by collecting single rain drops. (And there is a small leak in the bucket.) It takes time and effort. A lot of time. Thanks so much for this video.

Tienes razón, Gordon. El nivel de español depende en la situación. Por ejemplo, en una clase de gramática o literatura or traducción o aun lingüística, no tengo problemas con seguir el tema del profesor o profesora, pero en un restaurante, todavía tengo problemas con pedir ciertas cosas o hacer una pequeña charla. Es tan difícil, aunque pueda hablar durante una hora de mi último viaje a España o algo así.

Para mi, avanzado no tiene que ser entender el español como tu lo hablas, muy claro y despacio, sino el español hablado entre dos o mas españoles, tan rápido que a veces no se en cual idioma están charlando.
