Tom - I've been teaching guitar for ~40 years... and you're one of the very best instructors I've ever encountered. Clear (easy to follow) ... Compelling (interesting and great balance of language + guitar-playing examples). I'll be looking for more of your work on the interwebs. Thank you for sharing.

Definitely gonna come in handy, I've been trying to get the speed of my sweeps up for a while now. Tom has gotta be the most captivating guitar teacher on KZbin. Once I saw a video I looked for more!

I love these "extra" videos because I can change up my daily practice while still working on whatever the underlying technique(s) may be.

I kind of skipped around on this video since I know how to do arps just wanted to see how others did them so I don't really know if you covered this but arps are a lot better sounding with the neck pickup. I notice you favor the neck pickup for them which is the same as I do. Either way good lesson.

+evilcowboy ...Yes, using the neck pick up for arpeggios gives a much smoother and thicker sound.

Great lesson as usual Tom. I'll be practicing this tonight. As a side note, how are you getting that nice overdrive tone? It really compliments your fast arpeggios in a nice musical way.

Thanks for the kind words about the video. Regarding my tone, most of it comes from my pickups. I use metal live wires (Seymour Duncans)

TomHessMusicCorp Hell yeah livewire is an excellent pickup. I use one for a neck pickup on a guitar and it has one of the best tones I have heard.

I've been playing guitar for 13 years. I know all I can know about sweep picking, but for some reason my hands just don't want to cooperate with me.

So if I get electric guitar, and when I should learn Sweep picking. After 2 weeks of playing or maybe after 2 years? I have electric guitar 1 and half Month and I cant get sweep picking XD I tried sweep picking for a little more than week and yep its better but I cant pass through a wall. Maybe its too early for me, to learn it. What do you guys think, and when you learned sweep picking?

Completly off topic with the video but i need help with theory and designing a guitar practise schedule. And on ur picking motion ive seen alot of ur students do the same technique for sweep picking. Just wondering what that technique is called. Thanks

My biggest issue is trying to make something like this "musical". It sounds really cool on its own, but I can never fit in anywhere without it sounding really forced. Any advice on that? And thanks for posting these lessons. They are very helpful.

Tom, I use your picking hand thumb muting technique to eliminate string noise. It took me a lot of hours of practice to get it down. Now I am confused because I have a problem if i am doing a downstoke followed by a hammer on fowollowed by a down stroke on the next string (e.g downstroke on 3rd string, hammer on on 3rd string, downstroke on 2nd string). The problem I have is the picking thumb mutes the hammer on to soon if i keep my picking hand moving on the sweep like you say to do in this video. I have tried adjusting how i hold the pick but haven't found any solutions. What am i doing wrong?
@tomhessmusiccorp4 жыл бұрын
Hi Iain, make sure that your thumb is not hanging over the edge of the pick. If it does, it's going to mute the string you are playing/just played before you get to the next string. Pull the thumb back a bit, so it rests on the surface of the pick. I suggest to use larger picks for this (rounded triangle shapes).
