I’m not nitpicking, I just want to save frustration for later viewers. This video has helped me IMMENSELY with this technique, but I had to rewatch the videos many many times because I just wasn’t getting it. On the 3-string sweep you start with, the tabs you provide are not the same as what you’re playing, and what you’re playing is definitely way easier to do. Your tabs went “12-11-10-13-11-12” (on the respective strings, but I can’t write tabs in a comment) but in reality you played “12-11-10-13-11-10” then repeat. That 10th fret on the g string was a GAME CHANGER when I finally realized it. So much easier to play and pick up speed when you don’t have to double pick the same note.

@@EclecticEssentric haha that's brutal i guess it was even more monetizable back in the 80s and early 90s when you still had these sick virtuosos in the charts, everyone wanted to be a guitar god no internet either indeed... i member those days, just didn't play guitar yet :P i started in '99, when nu-metal was already a thing, the average level of guitar playing in pop music had already dropped dramatically. learned from a friend how to tune in drop D and just started dicking around playing shit, the easy marylin manson riffs and verious piss punk and the such even played drop E for a while, playing 1 finger powerchords up the neck on the top 3 strings lol, until i finally started playing standard, took like 2 years lol self-taught for the most part, after getting some pointers from word of mouth, my playing by ear is probably my best skill from 15 years of trying to be a solo guitarist never really bothered to learn songs anymore either, usually pick out the chords quick enough, and i focused on making my own material, i now have like pratice routines for certain techniques, turned into songs, because i wnated to create stuff not do boring amusical shit, and still learn things in the process, like a double whammy. heres something i did like last week, trying to get picking technique again: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnrXkIuroZyqmpo pure legato exploitation... the only thing that kinda comes easy to me, i'll never not be sloppy either, but i was very pleased nonetheless you keep rocking too! :P

When I close my eyes, I'm hearing a young Jeff Goldblum. I try sweeping, but just end up doing a 50s surf style rake. I lack the speed in the fretting hand. There's a guy on YT (Danny Danzi) who does it really fast toward the end of his song "Happy To Be Alive". I'll never reach that level.

nonosh I started when I was 13, and I’m 20 now... I’m really feeling the pull of adult life telling me to put my gear in my closet and put my gear money toward a new car. It’s terrifying and sad, but it’s encouraging that it’s not forever. I mean, i still play rn, but not as much, and I know when I have a family and a career it’ll be even less and less. What was your “hobby hiatus” like?
@leonardsullivan
@leonardsullivan 6 жыл бұрын
@@maxonmendel5757 Hahaha dont even worry man, put thatmoney towards the things that you NEED in life! If your homeless, starving, and barely surviving you won't need a guitar anyways! Put thatmoney towards a car, get yourself right and in a few months you can get some gear! You'll be good, just keep pushing, always. I had a guitar hiatus recently for a couple years and have finally gotten sober, collected myself, and come back a better person than I've ever been. Decided to pick the guitar up again and dude....I have come back with a vengeance!!! I was pretty damn good before but I am surpassing limits I had previously placed on myself. Telling myself I couldn't do certain things. Anyways, you may have more important things to do right now in the moment but be patient and when you have the money and time to come back....hit it fucking hard dude, you'll be proud of yourself. 30 years and still my Achilles' heel. I never had the patience to practice them properly. As a young player in the Bay Area in the late 80's, I was bored to death by metal/thrash bands with Skolnick clones shredding three-string arpeggios in every solo. I do wish I had spent more time on them but not that much. That's why I never got my Shred Club membership card. Great lesson and thank you for the video. All the best from the Bay Area. MK

getting good sounding sweeps: 40% pick control, 40% mute control, 20% dexterity. sweeping only seems impossible because it's got a fast feel to it. when you break it down, it's all in the wrist: slow, precise, controlled movements are the key. your fret hand can go much faster easily. slowing down and loosening your wrist is the key. hope this helps the newbies, it seems to work for friends i show my sweeping to.

Is this THE BEST sweep-picking-technique lesson on KZbin/anywhere-really? - Absolutely! This dude is gifted in many ways, not just musically, one of them is his teaching ability - how he reveals the assumedly complex/impossible to be simple & approachable - and well possible with the right practice & teacher. Great stuff as always Jake!

Thank you sir. This was hard for my 52 year old fingers as a beginner on the electric guitar. Very fun though. It is really a great exercise in general for me. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪

For someone who never tried sweeping, should I start with a 3 strings arpeggio like you showed? If I try a 5 strings arpeggio, increasing the speed on a metronome, would my learning process take me longer?

Wish I knew where you were when I started around 16 years ago. It would have been such a fast track by avoiding all the filtering through books, cds, dvds, you name it! Absolutely love your work and a joy to watch. All the best and thank you for your time!

Thanks for the lesson, I’m working on sweep picking, it is difficult, it takes patience and time, kind of the same difficulty for me when i worked on learning Travis style picking.

great lesson! your videos are top notch. i was watching your middle finger in the sweep that started at 6:40, as you picked up speed and ascended chromatically the finger appears to stay planted!

Jeffery Lord he said to prevent the note from ringing you either have to move that finger or mute the string(with your picking hand). As long as the sweeps are played cleanly it doesnt matter which method you use. I'm one of the the people that moves their fretting hand :)

Dillinger Esacpe plan showed me about sweeps on their "Calculating infinity" LP. I saw them open for Misfits when they were touring for that LP. I'd never seen anyone play such INSANELY technical stuff and SOOOOO HEAVY!!! on 43% burnt, Dimitri blew huge fireballs to the slams at the end of the song! 'Fits had an amazing show otherwise it was "the opening band set the bar sooo high!... that's gonna be hard to beat!"

Great lesson.. The one thing that I've been struggling with is the consistency specially when a pull off is involved on the first string.. Instead of doing 1-2-3-4-5-6, i end up doing 1-2-3-456...

As this video started, the very first thought that went through my empty mind was "Obama". I promise I don't mean that as an insult nor in a negative way at all. Just an observation. After skimming through the comments, I see I'm not the only one who noticed the resemblance. Obama not withstanding, you sir are an outstanding guitar player! Thanks for the video!

Thank you for taking the time to make this video and others. I’ve learned so much watching you at least in a vernacular way. You have helped so much including me. Your videos are beyond perfect with you word choice, the way you present the subject, and how you explain it. Thanks again.

Who are the 176 idiots who gave this a dislike? After 35 years of playing guitar I'm just now getting into sweeps and this dude is giving you fucking GOLD! If you're self taught like me take this guys lesson and fucking do it. Not only did I give this video a like, I also wish I could give him $100 dollars.

Other things to consider that may speed up the learning and dexterity curve. 1. Different thickness picks of different textures and materials. 2. A stylus pick to train yourself to only tap the top 1/2 of each string. 3. String action. 4. Heavy or lighter strings 5. Holding the guitar high upper torso. 6. Fret size.
