The nation refers to the United States. And the state refers to California.

@@AccurateEnglish aha, that's interesting. I guess it works only for the US because normally we say " the state of Ukraine or the state of Israel" meaning both the nation ( people) and the territory. However your country consists of many states and that makes the difference, right?
