I rarely ever use a base anchor. Especially when I know I will have to relocate my tie-in point. I use canopy anchors with retrieval cord attached (8mm) or leave long tail for short retrieve. To advance I attach a throw bag to end of line and throw up to next tie-in point (sometimes just a carabineer facilitates throwing line up).

I agree I like canopy anchors if I'm working my way up the tree. Thanks for sharing!

That application with my GriGri is gonna work very good cause I can easily detach from lifeline, I just won't be able to use the foot ascender, instead I'll use the hand ascender with foot loop, thanks Bino! Been learning a lot from your channel

Thanks for this informative video Bino! I always get a kick out of when the elusive Noah is spotted in the tree waiting for your ascent...

Great content as usual. No two trees are alike so the thought of climbing different trees and acquiring the view points seems exciting. I've seen people put rock climbing beds in and do sleep overs up high. Even that seems like fun. Lol

Was dealing with this yesterday! Couldn’t get my throw bag on the ideal anchor so went for a lower one. But the next anchor up was on an overhanging trunk.

There is another way to advance but instead of using a base anchor use a canopy anchor. here's a video kzbin.info/www/bejne/naiUeXttbZWpZ6M

Another good video, Bino. Now I remember why I'm willing to spend inordinate amounts of time getting the best TIP from the ground when possible. LOL I also always carry a second prussik cord, in case I drop the one I'm climbing with. Keep up the good work!

I wondered why some guys switch to Ddrt when they want to climb higher than the first tie in when using SRT with a base anchor. As you nicely demonstrated, pulling all that rope, disconnecting and retying the SRT every time is less efficient than just throwing the end over the next branch as one does with Ddrt. I've seen some guys throw the rope wrench over the branch as a unit but that can't be good for the mechanism, and I'd worry about snagging or losing or damaging it. If you have a buddy at the base, he can untie the base anchor to give you full Ddrt control. Only thing is, you lose the easy rope ascending power of SRT when you do that.

To advance with a base anchor is heck of a lot more challenging. What it great about it is there are options. Base anchor, Canopy anchor or MRS. I think the key thing is to know the basics before you get to SRS. Thank you!

Bino, I am overweight and I am starting tree climbing as a hobby. I suppose you have few extra pounds as well. My question is how much extra weight makes your tree climbing more difficult? Should I start even with extra weight or should I wait till I lose extra weight (currently I am 260 lb at 5’10”, and my plan is to go back to 200, what used to be my weight for years)
@BinoH
@BinoH 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I sure do have some extra pounds. Two months ago I was at 248 lbs and my plan is to reach 200 and try to maintain it. Only your body can tell if it's up to climbing at the weight you are at. If you're lighter it will always be easier. I'm happy I never stopped. Take care!

Hi Bino, why would you choose a canopy anchor over a basal one? Can you make it retrievable?
@BinoH
@BinoH 3 жыл бұрын
I like a canopy anchor beause it does not double my weight and yes they can be retrievable.

@Bino H how would this differ using a canopy anchor? Thank you
@BinoH
@BinoH Жыл бұрын
A base anchor is attached to the ground and by doing that now your weight can be double and if you don't throw into you final tie in you have to advance by sending your entire rope of over your final tie in. Canopy anchor does not double you weight and when advancing with the help of a quickie you don't have to send your entire rope through your final tie in.

this is the most assnine and complicated thing l’ve ever seen done in a tree and l’ve been in the industry and around hundreds of climbers for over 27 years. tiny trees like that, a person should just climb MRS to the top and either set up a friction saver and stay MRS or switch over to SRT/SRS and work the tree that way… this is probably the most complicated and time consuming way to get to the top of a tree that l’ve ever seen.🤦🏼‍♂️🙄
