Bob Carver is a genius but probably not more so in tech than in marketing. Phase Linear amps were among the most volatile BJT designs out there.

Yup - short that PL 400 output just the little bit, and you can scrap the amplifier, or spend hours replacing every single one of those PL101 transistors, the drivers and other bits on the driver board, and use wire to replace the ridiculously narrow traces.

hehehe all Class-D amplifiers I know off has a MOSFET output stage - sooo, the MOSFET amplifier is absolutely still going strong LOL I think (guess) that the biggest problem were that the MOSFET's became so popular in switching circuits that, today and the last 2-3 decades, the research and development efforts into MOSFET's has been on switching optimized types. And there is a huge difference in parameters of a switching type and one suitable for analog/audio circuits - try find suitable Power MOSFET's for a 100+Watts analog output stage - I mean a complementary set of 2 transistors or a Nch that could be used for both upper and lower side (not ideal) - not 5 sets of paraleled compl. pairs. I think that one of the hurtles is that it is, seemingly, much more difficult to produce a to produce a "well proportioned" Nch/Pch complimentary pair of MOSFET's than it is to produce a complimentary pair of BJT's Btw, I sat and waited for you to "touch" on the drawbacks of the tubes and the reason why so much effort was put into making amplifiers with transistors !?! - but well most of us know why. They are actually mechanical parts and they wear out much faster than transistors, and while they wear they change the way they sound, and a new tube does not sound exactly the same - no matter how good the amplifier design is. then there is the types of distortion that tubes and transistors are able or prone to produce or not able to produce because there are some restrains on the way you have to design the circuits around them ;-)

From all accounts vacuum tube design was a chemist's wet nightmare. I don't believe there are two digits of folks alive who could do what was done in the 1920s-1960s. Same goes good luck getting to the moon and back in 202x using verbs and nouns. Ain't gonna happen and furthermore, OSHA would never approve it.

The mosfet amps I'm referring to are analog designs, like traditional power amps. A mosfet style transistor could be used within a digital power amp but I wouldn't expect that to be a marketing feature.
