I've been doing this stuff since about 1982, used to get a lot of my repair parts from Neil speakers in Sacramento, I've even sold him speakers he needed for ARS that I came across decades ago, and I always thought it was easy to roll up some toilet paper or paper towels and stick them underneath the four frame spokes to lift the cone a bit up to level where I needed to work with it, and then after the surround was glued to the cone I would run the 60 HZ signal at a low level of volume through the woofer by pulling the RCA's halfway out where the turntable plugged in to the preamp to get a nice 60 HZ tone which would get the woofer moving and then I could center the foam on the frame whether it was an ar, jbl, altec etc and it's usually start with 3:00 and 9:00 left to right top to bottom till I found the sweet spot in the middle and push down into the glue then I go to 12:00 and 6:00 and then in between until I was glued all the way around and I have never had even one woofer fail. Just thought I'd throw a little perhaps additional helpful info in there. Thank you for the video 👍😁

I've done a lot of electronic equipment building, modifying and fixing over the years, but I always shied away from messing with speakers. Don't know why I thought it was some sort of dark art which required special tools, knowledge and experience. Maybe because it's so easy to mess up a speaker, I figured it must be really hard to repair them and get the voice coil aligned. But I watched this video and couldn't wait to give it a try. I had a pair of Advents in storage for years. Got the foam kit and fixed both woofers this afternoon. Used the video to guide me through as I refoamed the 1st. The 2nd I did without referencing the video or instructions. My fear is gone. In fact, I watched a few more videos and would be willing to try a full cone and voice coil job if need be. Thanks so much for demystifying speaker repair and providing such a good repair kit and video tutorial. I always had a soft spot for my old Advents and couldn't bear to ditch them. Now I'm in the process of checking out and repairing piles of equipment I've collected over the years, from old tube Heathkits I built starting at age 12, to massive vintage receivers I collected. I really didn't want to hook some 50 year old amp that hadn't even been powered up for decades to any of my good speakers. I pretty much figured the Advents were already goners, so I had nothing to lose by using them as guinea pigs for my test rig. And if one of these old amps suddenly puts 200 watts of 60 Hz hum through the speakers and blows them out, I now know I can fix them again. Wow, I’m 65 and I finally learned that fixing speakers isn't magic. It's a bit messy with the old foam that turns to dust when you breathe on it and the glue for the new foam, but refoaming speakers is fun and very satisfying. Thanks. Great job SimplySpeakers.

I had a pair of Advent utility speakers purchased in 1974. I had not used them for years as I thought they were broken due to the crackling sound. I watched this repair video, ordered the refoam pads and easily repaired the speakers. The process took me a little longer than shown but that is attributed to my skill set (or lack thereof, or just being cautious). I hooked up the speakers and the sound is incredible! I had forgotten how good they sound. Simply Speakers had a thumbs up from me.. Another motivating factor was that these speakers are on eBay for $200 and up! My repair parts were less than $25.

Great video and website. Never heard of or seen an "inverted" surround before. I've got my dad's Advent speakers from the '70s and when I removed the grill cloth, I was confused by the masonite ring and of course the surround was gone which might have given me a clue how the surround was originally installed. If I didn't watch this video, I surely would have tried to install the surround up side down in the more conventional way. I guess Kloss was thinking out of the box on this one, eh?

We have done extensive work on both types over the years. The Dahlquist dust cap on their woofer is indeed different than the Advent, but all other parts are identical. While both cabinets have similar internal volume, the Advent crossover uses a much simpler design and is less restrictive on woofer operation, and performance.

I repaired one surround on a 10" (masonite ring) woofer in a Dahlquist DQ-20, and two 10" woofer surrounds in a pair of Ultraphase 3001's. This product worked perfectly, especially with this very well done tutorial. Not hard to do if you pay attention to the tutorial. By my second repair I made a couple improvement suggestions to consider. First I used a wire wheel in a bench grinder to easily (and very carefully) remove all trace of residual glue along the outer edge of the metal basket on the Ultraphase (Phillips) woofers, where the outer rim of the surround and the gasket are then glued. Second, not only did the dremel with a cylinder sander work well to remove excess original glue on the inside edge of the gaskets, but a very light touch of the dremel also cleaned up the bottom face glue and junk on the gaskets and left a nice flat gluing surface. Thank you for one of the best tutorials I've seen.

My old Advent 2W speakers were not being used because the foam was gone. I ordered the FSK-9 kit, followed your instructions and they look and sound great again. I connected them up to my Sansui 331 receiver. I think they are smiling again. :) Also re-connected an older pair of Jennings Research Inc. tower speakers. Thank you very much.

I just used the foam kit for my DQ20s. It was not quite as easy as the film looks, (the glue sets up really quickly) but neither was it hard. However, I would add one step. Check the condition of the glue that holds the Masonite to metal dish. I found after I re-installed the speaker, that it was loose around about one third of the seal. This was the main thing that was making the vibration in the first place (although the foam was in need of some repair also). When you have the speaker out of the cabinet, see if the Masonite is tight all around. I found it easy to pop off (glue worn out). I simply re-glued it to the metal, but would have been easier had I done this before re-foaming. Reference the film where they say, "don't touch the Masonite." I say, carefully inspect and touch the Masonite if necessary.

The speed with which the glue sets should definitely be reiterated. Even the thicker spots of application around the cone only needed a minute to consistently hold the foam in place (though this doesn't mean it's fully set yet!).

I was just given 4 Large Advent speakers, complete with the original boxes, the "L" shaped cardboard to fit on each corner in the box, and the top and bottom cardboard slips. There is a switch on the back by the speaker screws that adjusts the sound and they are 8 ohm. It says they are designed by Henry Kloss. Removing the grille, the tweeter is reddish and there is a stamp with a date of 1973. The foam on the woofers is mostly gone. Your kit will replace the foam on these?

I'll agree that both woofer designs look the same. Seems odd that the Advent Bass is so solid and extended while people commonly complain of a lack of bass in the Dahlquist?
@socksumi

Around 1974 Absolute Sound spoke to Dahlquist and Advent and both firms declared that their woofers were in fact different despite the similar appearance. Clearly the same factory built them but to a different spec required by the companies. The differences are obviously in the motor/voice assembly. This is clearly audible in the listening. The Advent had prodigiously deep and slightly loose bass while Dahlquist sported a tighter but much less heavy bass despite similar box volumes.

hey there, hopefully i can get a straight answer within the week (and this is a 6 year old video), but how did you remove the leads attaching the woofer to the rest of the cabinet? i'm planning on having my Advent "Original Loudspeaker" woofers refoamed and it seems like the wires are soldered on (or at least were very firmly attached with some sort of crimped metal sleeve), so i didn't want to tug on them too hard in case they just broke off (yes, i'm a complete newbert at this stuff, so please be gentle). is there some way i can disconnect the woofer so i could just bring the cones up to my local shop rather than have to haul the whole cabinet in? if there's a way to do that without involving soldering irons to reattach the wires afterwards, that'd save me a chunk of change for the repairs. thanks!
@simplyspeakers
@simplyspeakers 5 жыл бұрын
These should simply use the crimp on connectors. We occasionally see them soldered if they have been repaired in the past. Use pliers to carefully remove the crimp connectors from the woofer terminals, or you may need to de-solder them.

I've been searching for 10'' "reverse roll" for a pair of KLH 317's. Unlike the KLH 17 that has a fabric surround the 317's were foam. If you have a 10" whats the sku# so I can order a pair.
