Can I use mineral spirits on the old glue? 70% alcohol isn’t cutting it and I don’t have any lacquer thinner. Thanks for the informative video!!!
@simplyspeakers8 күн бұрын
Try lacquer thinner or acetone. One of these will do the trick!

For those replacing a cone on a F110, 112, or 113 you need to remove the four pins that normally hold you speaker grill in place. That allows the front wooden frame to be removed which gives you access to the silver perimeter ring that needs to be removed. This is shown on the JL website. Also, I used packing tape to attach string to the inner cone. I then tied it off to a 6ft A frame ladder I had positioned over the woofer to apply upwards pressure on the cone since I had no access from below.

5:51 - I really don't recommend using the finger tip to smooth out the glue. They are very sticky and one won't be able to wash them off easily in order to handle or install the foam afterwards. I would just say use the brush (which was included in the kit) to smooth out the glue.

Just wanted to say, i picked up a pair of Infinity Bookshelf speakers at an estate sale. Nohting special, but I'd seen t his video a while ago and thought this might be an interesting project. Reached out to Simply Speakers, i was a bit confused with the sizing, Sean was able to get me the correct refoam kit. The job was easy peasey. Easier than i expected even it being my first time around. Speakers sound great, great video, great service and fantastic customer service. Thank you sir!

Excellent video! Even for old timers, the thought of refoaming can be a little intimidating, but your training video is very thorough and I'm pretty sure anyone can replicate this process, which is both practical and effective. I really appreciate the effort touching on possible missteps and sharing the techniques you've learned over the decades to mitigate the possibility of a botched job. Now... I just need to get my butt in gear and get started on my Sound Dynamics 12S foam surround replacement! Thanks again. 🎉

make sure you understand whether you need a flat attach surround or an angle attach surround. all the low budget sellers on ebay will sell you a flat attach surround, while telling you it will fit an angle attach speaker. you cant get a flat attach foam to lay flat on an angle cone.

I've been doing this stuff since about 1982, used to get a lot of my repair parts from Neil speakers in Sacramento, I've even sold him speakers he needed for ARS that I came across decades ago, and I always thought it was easy to roll up some toilet paper or paper towels and stick them underneath the four frame spokes to lift the cone a bit up to level where I needed to work with it, and then after the surround was glued to the cone I would run the 60 HZ signal at a low level of volume through the woofer by pulling the RCA's halfway out where the turntable plugged in to the preamp to get a nice 60 HZ tone which would get the woofer moving and then I could center the foam on the frame whether it was an ar, jbl, altec etc and it's usually start with 3:00 and 9:00 left to right top to bottom till I found the sweet spot in the middle and push down into the glue then I go to 12:00 and 6:00 and then in between until I was glued all the way around and I have never had even one woofer fail. Just thought I'd throw a little perhaps additional helpful info in there. Thank you for the video 👍😁

Ordered the kit from SS and undermounted the surrounds on my >25 yr old 8" JBLs. I skipped shimming the coil to center on one and it made no difference (the coil has very very close tolerance on these - would not accept playing card strips). Both speakers sound better than new. Way worth the $25.
@mikezylstra75144 ай бұрын
25 y/o 8" JBLs with powdered surrounds were rattly-trashed. Did this repair, undermounted as they originally were. Coil was so close I couldn't really shim it so I skipped that step in the second one - made no difference. They both sound better than new. Incredible result for about $25.

I can remember using similar techniques nearly 70 years ago, however we didn't have the benefits of modern epoxy adhesive, mostly we used hot wood glue and made the cone former out of wood then used paper strips and flour glue to make the cone. No plastics available so we used card to space the cone in the magnet, and if we were lucky we were able to reuse the coil, if not we made a new coil and former. We made use of everything we could as we did with our common sense. Those were the days, when a speaker worked well, we knew we had created a small miracle and saved a small fortune as we had no spare cash only our brains and hands as this was during the early post war years and ingenuity was the operative word.

Commenting tonight on March 1, 2024, this video was an invaluable guiding resource while performing my first re-foam. I've long had a pair of Cerwin Vega AT-10's that are still working fine. I recently inherited a free pair of D-3 speakers with deteriorated foam surrounds. I just finished the job and they came out really well. I'm now confident I can repair my AT-10's should the need arise. Solid A-Z instructional. 👍

Thanks for selling the kits and sharing this video, I feel like I really nailed the refoam, it’s not a hard task, but it was very rewarding.
