I've been running one for a few months now. But I have never been that fussy with service. Modern oil and engine builds, I think people just like to argue online.

Hi Keith, I run the Rhino cover on my 2017 450 EXCF with 1.5Ltr of oil just above the top of the sight glass. I also have a motion pro filter magnet fitted. I recently rode 1900 miles on a Morocco trip without an oil change. Mixed riding , highway, mountain roads, trails ,etc max highway speed 65mph over some distance geared 14-45 on sprockets. The bike was flawless throughout and when I changed the oil it looked pretty good. I used Motorex 10/60 synthetic. I would not do this on a regular basis though, Ideally I would change it every 600-800 mile. It goes to show you can do some distance on these bikes and push the limits on the occasional long trip. I work on these bikes week in week out and what I see is , if you change the oil regular the motors last and last. So for me its a case of more frequent changes between the odd high mileage oil change to keep the motor fresh. Also after my big trip the filter screen was clean and so was the filter magnet. Interesting to see the results of your oil analysis.

Looking forward to the oil analysis comparison video. Assuming you will be doing your normal style of riding which will make it very relevant for many 500 riders. Not everyone is a racer!

Hi Keith - I run the carbon up cover on my 22 model. The 'increase' in oil capacity is minor - maybe around 50-60ml from my usage. I like the cover and supposedly super strong so that is why I have it. From everything I have read to date with non-competition use, I would happily change oil regularly around the 2000-2500km mark.

I ordered one of the Adventure Bike Components Clutch Covers a few days before I saw this video. I'd seen Dave at MADTV was going to fit one on his 501 build and figured I'd give it a shot as well. This is my first dirt bike turned into dual sport/ADV so increased oil capacity seems like a good idea. I'm interested to see what your comparison and oil analysis shows us.

15 hours oil intervals are for Toby Price hours, not average Joe hours. Moreover, I bought my 2012 500 EXC precisely because it had, from factory, 1.5L oil capacity - and an excellent price! 13K kms so far no issues whatsoever (350 hours).

This engine is a race engine and very very well designed for it's business. Unlike the brad & butter stuff in mass produced engines, there are components and designs in place, who survived in the rough competition world. As an traveler, you can just appreciate this and enjoy a reliable power source. I use the NomadADV clutch cover mainly for the protection value. The KTM/Husky cover is optimized for weight and might not survive the contact with rocks. I use Motul 7100 and Motul V300 and amount of particles in the oil is low, even with 3k oil changes. Note that the 15h mentioned in the papers are recommended for the intended use of these bikes: Pure competition!

NomadADV claims an additional 300 mL reaching 1,5 L. Since max level on OEM is 1,4L, I think their clutch cover gives only 100mL.

I've been using the US made Bestdualsports oily cover since mid 2019 and it provides an extra 250mm measured to the top line. I'm happy with that extra oil. It doesn't have the full array of bolts but only weeped slightly at the beginning and nothing since. It is much stronger than the exotic standard clutch cover. I did an experiment at oil change time, I laid the bike down after draining the oil to see how much was left in the cover. Approx 20ml of oil was left so I don't bother trying to completely drain it. I carry out changes in the 1500-2000km range and the oil still looks good. Best lightweight reliable performance motor of the last 20 years, never to be beaten.

My KTM 500 Oil Solution is heat management. ( 80 Celsius fan switch, Boyesen super cooler and thermostat delete.) Bike runs cool. Valves stay adjusted. I change the oil at One thousand miles of pure joy. [ Oil is dark yellow and not black].

Recent video by Taco Mike said keep your air filter clean and 50 hours is a very reasonable interval and they're doing testing and thinking that 80 hours may be fine. That assumes it's not being raced.

I think you get a bigger difference than 200 ml when overfilling due to you're have more benefits of the deeper cover. As you see when the level is in the middle of the sight glass there is not much oil in the cover.

Why didnt you just get a measuring cup and fill both covers with water and you would know exacty how much extra it holds over the stock.

Interesting mate was thinking about those covers , but if your going to test for contaminates that would be tricky because of the filter screens and even magnet 🧲 wouldn't that take alot out allready. Nearly easier to carry 2 litres of oil and change it twice without doing the filter ?

As a causal rider and not a RTW guy, I think changing the oil once a year, after after any long trip, or abusive ride works just fine in stock configuration.

Go get ‘em Keith! Thanks for all your great advice There seems to be a lot of wrong marketing claims about capacity and results with these covers. I haven’t done this mod (even though it seems a good idea) as you’ve been running your 500 without any issues an so have I. We’ll see how it stacks up. Cheers

great video Keith!! i have a 2020 ktm 500 excf and when im doing the oil change, im adding 1300ml, always changing the filter, cleaning the screens and im only using Motorex oil, no problem so far... alot of ppl are saying that if your doing normal dual sport riding, and using quality oil, you dont have to change it a 15h.... looking foward for your next video!!

I messaged Tacomotoco about the cover and asked if it actually made a difference in oil change intervals allowing for longer intervals. The response was *cover is a myth*. So I am curious to see your analysis on this because I still want to know if it's a myth.

Very interesting discovery Keith. I'm looking forward to your test results. Its worth mentioning that the Beta 500s have separate engine and transmission oil circuits. Beta recommends oil changes at 30 hours.

This was one of the reasons I bought the Beta 480. Separate engine/gear oil, 750ml in each compartment. Im changing the oil after 60 hours or 3000km. The oil could definitely go longer and looks fine every change.

this is performance dirt bike not adv bike so cannot compare them but 500 exc-f do perfectly fine with changes every 60-80 hours trail riding (not heavy enduro) mine has over 520 hours not a single problems. Adding recluse clutch cover is well known trick to extend oil change intervals on enduro riders.

Good observation about the 33% 👍. Always been told that overfilling to the top of the glass will result in too much oil pressure, so I don’t do it… (would change tho if the practice was proved harmless.) Overall, I’m not convinced 200ml more really is a game changer, it’s 15% more, so a fair assumption on a linear increase brings the 15hrs to 17.5hrs. Big deal? Hmm, so your planned test is defo interesting to me. Thanks.

15 hour oil changes are for Kevin Benavides and Toby Price, not the average rider. It'll go at least to 35-40 and I've been doing so for a long time. Mine has 13K kms so far (350 hours) and doesn't burn even a drop of oil.

the oil breaks down due to heat over time, reducing its effectiveness. standard operating temp is 15hours, racing(aka maxed out constantly) is fresh oil each race. if your bike sits there and idles for 15 hours, its at operating temp...... you need to do a oil change, it no longer holds its original lubricity traits.

@@paulbartsch1223 what does your manual say? Some oil stays in the system when you just let it drain. To be fair I was talking about 2016 Husqvarna FE450 tho. Checked 2016 500EXC manual and it says 1,5 liters.

i mean isnt there claim around more oil meaning a lower percentage of contaminates just fundamentally true? You have more oil, so the same amount of contaminates is going to be a lower percentage inherently because there is...more oil. The only way it wouldnt be true is if more oil somehow results in a greater amount of contaminates, which i very much doubt.

Why do you want to ruin a great bike trying to make it into an adventure bike? 500EXC is meant to be light. Leave it light. You can't turn it into an adventure bike. If you want an adventure bike, buy an adventure bike. This modification is dumb. Makes the 500EXC gain weight, which was so carefully eliminated, for a dumb reason - to have more oil. Just change the oil - and keep the awesome lightness.
