Those A10s were sick. On 4th of July morning we were on the boat on Lake Cascade and they did a pass about 500ft directly over us, then they looped back around and did a second pass. Guess those A10s like to fly the Idaho mountains too haha.

I wonder if using a 10K 10Watt wire wound resistor would be a better option than a simple 1/2 or 1 watt carbon. A 10 Watt wire wound resistor would certainly last. Cheers from Winnipeg. (oh... and I really enjoyed this video)
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 2 жыл бұрын
I like where your thought process is. That was kind of my hope with the multiple resistor approach.. I think I will have something more beefy on hand if it burns out again. Good idea. Thanks!

More fantastic scenery, very envious as looks like a lot of fun for a camp out. One query I have which is for sure a contentious one, the big tyres and the gear.. look just so draggy. All the places I saw you land in the video, surely a standard 5-6" tyre could handle comfortably? I understand for off field landings the big tyres have their place though. Do you do enough of the off-field stuff to warrant the extra fuel burn of the big tyres? Personally, I think I would swop out wheels according to my flying intentions just to be 'efficient'.
@juststeve7665
@juststeve7665 2 жыл бұрын
The bigger tires also allow for higher angle of attack on takeoff and landing
@jmoriarty7106
@jmoriarty7106 2 жыл бұрын
Off field stuff is all we do. If you fly long enough your going to have a engine failure and those big tires and gear will probably will keep you from totaling your aircraft . All of the places you see in the video are full of goffer and badger holes that will swallow a small tire.
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 2 жыл бұрын
thats a good question... a lot of these strips can be done with small tires... absolutely. couple reasons I keep the big tires on.. for one, I don't have anything else to run, also, I did some fairly hardcore off airport on this trip (showed one of those on the part 1 video). so I do like having the plane setup and capable for off airport at any time. since thats 99% of what I do when at home anyway. As John mentioned.. if something goes wrong, they really do pay off when it happens. also.. the gear is surprisingly draggy as well.. so smaller tires would give back some speed, but the gear robs a lot as well, and I'd still be fairly slow lol... also though, something to consider as John said.. a lot of these strips are pretty nice, but will occasionally have a gofer hole, or some weird thing its best not to hit. the large tires do give you a lot of margin. i see guys bring in stuff thats pretty fast, heavy, and has small tires.. and it generally works out fine.. but their margin is pretty slim on some of these strips. that far from home, its nice to have everything in your favor. Now.. if you have a plane with smaller tires, does it mean you shouldn't come up and play.. hell no! Might be a few strips worth sitting out, but overall, it's worth doing.. but in my case, I'll give up the few mph to have the above positives. I would like to put fairings on the gear legs and shocks though, there is a good 5-7mph to gain back there if done right! I've looked at a few ways to do it, but everything is pretty hokey if I want to keep it light.

Love the videos I'm a bit of a worrywart though. Is it just the camera angle or do you have a big bump on the left side of your neck kind of just below the left ear? I know the guy on HGTV that did flip or flop had some bump on his neck in the front and somebody noticed it and told him and it turned out he had cancer. Don't wish anything bad for you but you might want to get that looked at. Or at least you're verify was just a weird camera angle lol. 🤣

@@GravityKnightFlying one of the BUSH PILOTS did a thing on ''compact fishing rods'' I remember several FAILS... but I thought I rememberd one that lasted a little longer... hummm may have to try to search that one up again... was a year or 2 ago now tho... and I don't kno if the FAILS were really the RODS fault or the PILOTS for ummm misstreatment, of some form or another ;) LOL I do remember 2 got borken or at least ''messed up'' between packing-ump[acking there was breakage... eh... maybe some clips to keep it up along the top corner rails instead of down in the GEAR, was my suggestion to him then... my suggestion to you now ;) erases the need for a HEAVY CASE or wuttever... ;) BUT HIKEING INTO, AND GETTIN OUT THERE IN THE NATURE IS THE INTENT AND POINT and you are doing a SEEMINGLY SPLENDID JOB AT DOING JUST THAT!!! :) thanks for takin us along!! :) and SAFE TRAVELS so you can continue doing so!! :)

Could you fly Trikes into some of these places? What are the winds like?
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 2 жыл бұрын
If you are talking trikes as in weight shift..good question, I don't know enough to give you real good feedback. But I don't see why they couldn't go into a lot of these strips!? End of June the winds are generally pretty good. Afternoons get sporty and bumpy... mornings are almost always good.. evenings are often nice. Between looking at weather reports, the windy app, and flying up there each year.. my experience says that section of the rockies is much calmer than my section where I live in CO.. its windy here a lot.

You get off a lot quicker and climb out a whole lot steeper than that Legend Cub. How do they compare on the top end for speed and fuel burn?
@jmoriarty7106
@jmoriarty7106 2 жыл бұрын
David Todd cruises about 10 miles an hour faster than me. My stall speed is 10 miles an hour slower than his. As far as getting off guicker, I didn't know we were competing . I Didn't trying very hard. His plane does perform well no doubt about it.

@GravityKnightFlying

Yea as John said, he wasn't really pushing his. I think if he worked his harder, they would be pretty comparable on take off distance. At sea level, he would beat me. Down at lower altitudes, I had trouble keeping up with his climb. If I left it in the high boost map, I could hang, but I don't like doing that more than the first say 30 seconds. Once we get to higher altitudes (not sure exactly where the cross over is) I can then outclimb him. Makes sense being turbocharged etc. Our fuel burns were an interesting topic... we did some 1.5hr ish flights, and it seemed like I burned around 1.5-2 gallons less. That's pretty good fuel burn on that heavier Legend cub. The electronic ignition really helps on those... if it had electronic fuel injection too, like me, it would tighten that up a lot! The titan 180 is a well performing engine!

this is odd. i cant imagine what animosity there would be between rafters and pilots. theyre on a river and pilots are in the sky. the two couldnt be further apart. could you further explain? thanks
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of the rafters (definitely not all), don't want airplanes making noise while they are on the river. There is a big war in Idaho that has been raging for some time. They want it quiet, they want it all for themselves, and some of them have some real money to put behind it. Even though they often times get hauled in to raft by plane, they don't want us out there. They are constantly petitioning the forest service to close all these strips in the wilderness.
