While death splits our heroes apart, death is also what brings them back together. The Adventure Time: Distant Lands special "Together Again” reunited Finn the Human and Jake the Dog for a chthonic quest to preserve the cycle of reincarnation and save the Dead Worlds from the son of Life and Death (and the Lich Hand he unwisely teamed up with). This enthralling tear-jerking special feels like it can be a companion piece to the "ending" (the fun will never end!) of Adventure Time - while the series finale, "Come Along With Me," looked at the world of Adventure Time from a grand scale, "Together Again" focused on the heartfelt cosmic bond between Finn and Jake to bring closure. What a sublime saṃsāra of an adventure!
I wanted this to be a single lengthy video, but my depression has been a gigantic tranch, so I don't know when I’ll regain my capability and zest to keep working on videos. This half of the review was created not too long after “Together Again” originally premiered, and I've been sitting on it since then, but now that a (hyperbolic) eternity has passed, I decided to go ahead and slice this review in twain. When I emerge from the loomy gloom and find the time for it, I will inevitably return to finish Part 2.

Hi y'all, I had copyright issues with this review getting claimed and blocked (even my temporary reuploads got hit), but now the original review is back! However, after a blocked video is reinstated, the comments made prior to the copyright claim are supposed to return as well; for whatever chaotic reason, that did not happen, and the first ~600 comments this review received have vanished. I'm with YT creator chat support at the moment trying to find out if there's a way to get all those comments recovered (it has not been helpful). It feels like this review got cursed or something, especially since the copyright claim majorly curbed this video's growth potential at a crucial time in regards to algorithmic promotion. 💀 -Even if it turns out that the early comments got permanently obliterated from existence by GOLB,- I did read (or at least skim) through them all, and I thank you enormously for the outpouring of support. *_Edit from the future:_*_ Looks like the deceased comments randomly revived a couple days later?! Tops blooby._ Guess I may as well link my Patreon in this pinned comment, since I (unfortunately) do require $ to continue to live (even though I derive no pleasure from being alive). FYI: I pause my Patreon for months where I don't release videos (it is currently still paused): patreon.com/uncivilizedelk

Well done getting the video back up. Sorry you had to deal with that idiocy. Copyright claims are such BS. Anyways, love this video. I've been wondering what your thoughts on Together Again might be. Wishing you all the best with the depression and mental health hoops. I've experienced pretty severe depression and it SUUUUUUUCKS 👎 I just did my best to engage in the easiest things that brought any amount of not-depressed to my life. Like video games, food, clouds, coffee and baths. And I eventually started to feel like myself again. Best of wishes to you, dear Elk 💕💝💖

I love your content. My son and I really had an experience with Adventure Time. It means a lot to us both, I made him a season 1 golden sword and full sized BMO and he went to a comicon as Finn, long hair and all. He and his friend were blown away that people wanted pictures with him. He has a hard time revisiting the series (I do too) but I lean into the pain of it because it's reflection of something beautiful in/of life. I was VERY depressed, trama from watching my father die slowly and painfully at 6 years old, and was positive I would not make it out of my 20's. I would have never been on my greatest adventure. . .my son was born when I was 30. I had become an alcoholic, and had gotten sober shortly before I started my adventure. There will always be problems and stress in life, but now I find I am at peace with it. If you keep taking the next healthy step one day at a time. . .it gets better, fuck perfection or what anyone else is doing/saying. . .just shoot for a little better. Best part is, the show was so brilliant, it planted the seed long ago for a very helpful instruction manual for life IRL. . .amazon or a library will have the "Enchiridion". Google it. Again, I love your content. And I wish you best and if I could give you a copy right now I would. Cheers

I believe when Finn said "Its recognizable" at 16:37 I think this was not just a meta joke for the audience. Finn's only goal at that point was to find jake, this means he wants to be recognized by jake if he would see him. This is why I believe he chose this form, because jake died when he was around that age. which is honestly quite sad to think about ._.

This episode was a perfect combination of having great fan service while also having a great individual plot that stands on its own. Obsidian was the same way. I thought Come Along With Me was the perfect ending for the show itself but I thought that Together Again was the perfect conclusion for Finn and Jake's journeys as characters.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jake simply died of old age. He ages in dog years so it makes sense he'd die sooner, and hallucination jake goes on about how his death feels right. After you grow old enough, going past a certain, it looks an awful lot like you're just living to die, and maybe Jake had the same mentality as that. There's an inevitability in natural death that I feel is more poignant to Finn's reaction than I feel like there would be if Jake merely died whilst on an adventure.
@gwell2118
@gwell2118 Жыл бұрын
From what I gathered Finn did eventually move on from Jakes death as he did seem to have moved on from his grief of Jakes passing, but I feel deep down he was still in deep mourning of Jake that he made the concious decision to burry in his vault for the rest of his life. Leading to likely many unspoken issues remaining for the rest of his life. This is one of the things I always liked about Adventure Time, it portrays how life progresses in a very realistic way (in adventure time of all places). He had many traumas but he didn't let it stop him from living until end, some problems simply never went away and Finn carried them till the day he died. Also how the story of Finn wasn't based around some predefined destiny, there was no beat the evil emperor and die destiny fulfilled. He just went on random adventures until he finally past, his incarnation as Finn was no more significant in the cosmic sense than any of his other incarnations (the butterfly, Shoko, etc). His life didn't need some grand purpose to be worth living, it just had to be his life. And he is about to start a new one.

I gotta say, while I loved this special, I also felt compelled sadness. More so for Finn, or rather what happened to his life after Jake passed. While it was sweet that Finn would've been happy to see Jake once he passed on, it was also depressing. Considering the timeline of "Obsidian" and how Finn's memory showed that he was still young, I'd have to guess that Jake probably died maybe a year or 2 at most after the original series finale. And Finn just couldn't have moved on. Almost his whole life, he just couldn't in the best way I can think of: live on after Jake. He seemingly never settled down and have a family of his own ( like in his pillow world illusion ) or even had many friends left at that point. Makes me wonder abit. Does this mean that since Finn couldn't live on for other things after Jake died, does this make their relationship on some levels unhealthy or even toxic in a sense?
@pankreas2195
@pankreas2195 Жыл бұрын
Finn is deeply traumatized and clearly never solved his parental issues so yes he's very much dependent of Jake (father figure) and I'd even venture to say that his urge to be a hero comes from a place of feeling loke he has to prove he's worthy of love
@ariesmry
@ariesmry Жыл бұрын
I also wonder tho, if his lack of starting a family is due to him already experiencing it in the pillow world. Seems like Finn would go on to experience new adventures, rather than re-enact one already had. With the exception of Puhoy from the pillow world, none of his love interests (requited or otherwise) were the settling down type.

A lot of us who grieve feel like each day is just another day we draw closer to our lost loved ones. Even if that is true, it weighs heavy on us as we age even if it feels like the load is getting lighter. We simply make space for the grief, it never goes away. Finn had made space for the loss of Jake, but the parasite-drawn memories show that he was simply waiting to see him again, and his unwillingness to let go and let Jake remain in the 50th dead world shows this.

Real happy you're back! My take on the ice Jake death scene: It's kinda like Finn just tried to numb himself somewhat to the memory of Jake, cause even the good memories inevitably led back to his death. Even the wheel barrow and him being so young indicates that this was a loss of innocence moment for Finn. Like he just couldn't go back to this period, mentally, however badly he wanted to, cause he considered it the best period of his life, or something, because it always leads to Jake's death.

I just want to say THANKYOU! Thanks to a random video of yours popping up on my feed I rewatched the entire show for the first time in 8 years this July. It feels as if a piece of my precious childhood has been handed back to me. I love hearing you speak of this show and this episode was my favourite distant lands!

The other day I got real nostalgic for old KZbin channels that don’t exist anymore (e.g., PBS Idea Channel). There’s something sad and pleasant about YT and how you can grow such a close connection to a channel and then miss it years later. Your channel is really great. And while the affirmation of others isn’t really a catch all motivator for all that ails us, I want to say thank you for your content and work. It’s nice to hear someone else put to words the way AT makes me feel. Cheers mate.
