I loved the special because it was all it needed to be, a simple story to reintroduce us to the style of AT and get us enjoying classic AT again, which in my opinion, it succeeded. Also I somewhat agree on the humor points but the episode had an extremely good pace and never lingered on a weak joke, they knew which jokes were throwaway lines, and which they could spotlight.

O ya all the BMO humor, including the examples you pointed out, really worked for me. His "but I'm so cute" response to his life being threatened really got me. He's naive and wise. Immortal and a child. A robot and highly emotional. Loving and kind of a narcissist. And the voice acting and animation for him is always really delightful, but it really shined here. Honestly I feel like the creators sorta acknowledged that BMO was more of a "cute sidekick character" since that's what he was pondering in his death state lol. Perhaps BMO was released first since its story is more easily digestible and honestly a good reintroduction to AT. I still really enjoyed the episode and it just make me very excited for the rest of the distant lands series!
@CoolCrimsonJaguar4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, some of the BMO humor didn't really sell it for me, but I was usually too busy checking out the backgrounds and all the cameos to really care. Like, I know Y5's whole arc deal was pretty cliche, but I still loved it. For what it was, it was pretty good, but I will say that her parents should've gotten a bit more of a comeuppance than "oh we're sorry we were shitty parents". Just little a bit of righteous justice, as a treat. But other than that, I was stoked. This was great! I adore the finale, and I get where you're coming from with the whole closure to the series thing, but damn. I didn't realized how starved I was for content until now. Also, as a tiny nitpick, the bunny people's eyes were weird. I didn't like them. As for the Olive situation, I really think that's going to be elaborated on later. It just feels like there's more of a backstory there. I'm not sure what to make of it, but on the first viewing I was feeling pretty betrayed. I was like, "Olive?? What are you doing? Were you evil the entire time?????" That's clearly not the case, but I panicked. I also didn't recognize Martin's voice at first. I started to get suspicious though, and when he finally took off his shoes and I saw his feet I literally screamed at my screen "Oh, it's this fucker again!" Also something of note that makes me go ???, the lards are sentient. They talk and stuff. Why are they cattle. What the hell. Hope you're doing good! Take your time with these reviews if you need to, and try not to burn yourself out.

I think I definitely agree with the point that BMO works better in short chunks rather than a full 45 minute special. So having BMO paired up with Y5 was a good call. While the main plot was pretty basic for Adventure Time standards, I think the unique setting of the drift and the characters make up for that imo. And I’m glad someone else agrees that not showing Mr. M’s face, even though it was very obvious who he was, was an amazing creative decision.

I kinda like the idea that there were 2 mushroom bombs. Very evocative of hiroshima/nagasaki, which kind of grounds them for me in a weird way, idk. Like you said, there's basically a mythological aura to the bombs, and the circumstances that led them to creating/reincarnating the Lich are still very murky and unknown. Don’t forget that BMO fills his primary MO roll in this Distant lands episode. Moe made him special and released him into the world to evoke wonder and imagination in other. BMO is a force of nature because he’s a robot that has learned to love, hope and imagine. In this episode they teach Y5 these things. Y5 learns to be confident and hopeful. They learn that they already are capable of saving others and changing their world around them.
@01m1tr12 жыл бұрын
I think the moment with Olive it's just to show that it still appreciates Hugo. Olive saw something special in BMO and brought him to the drift because of it, the same for Hugo. Maybe Olive saw something special in both of them, and being a simple little robot they can look past the atrocities and still like Hugo for what qualities he has.

I really like the moment where Y5's parents immediately turn BMO off after capturing him. After seeing Y5 struggle to handle BMO's usual antics up until that point, seeing her parents just treat BMO like any other machine and prepare to sell him for parts, really stuck with me.
@Nick_Lyston4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jared- yeah, this was a fantastically done scene. When pondering our capacity for evil born out of bigotry, people tend to focus on how we tend to hate those we believe are inferior to us, and to exploit them with animosity. But hate is a hot emotion, not too far removed from the warmth of love. The real evil born out of bigotry is not hate but rather the frozen coldness of apathy, the total disregard of the Other. The best example of this in modern times is how we completely disregard the lives and feelings of the animals we eat. Few of us actually HATE cows and pigs- an emotion as powerful as hate would be giving them too much consideration and respect, and we might start questioning what we do to them. Instead, we completely disregard them, and treat them as nothing more than machines to be used and discarded, the way Y5's mother regarded BMO. Like BMO and the animals we eat, we all share the capacity to love. But we must overcome the true evil of bigotry- the cold, apathetic shoulder shown to warm, love-capable victims, if we are to ever also reach our capacity as beings who are WORTHY of love.

I thought the Olive and Hugo final scene was a gentle slap as much as anything else. Theres a brief but interesting familial dynamic there, the "disappointed in me". really makes the bot seem they had sort of parental influence in Hugos life. I think his character is very similar to Martin's, he wasn't nesscerlly a bad person from the beginning, but he started making so many horrible mistakes that he just started to own them, pretend he didn't care who he hurt to get his way until he didn't. The brief interactions we saw between Hugo and the orb reminded me a lot of The Lorax and the Oncler (animated movie version). I imagine they parted ways very similarly. It would have been nice if they had given more depth to Hugo, I think he has the potential to be a really interesting character.

Thanks for making this, man. I was excited to see what you had to say about it. Overall, i'd give this one a 3/5 in terms of what I wanted out of a BMO-ccentric episode. For me, it was missing a sense of grounding by being in space, no pun intended. I didn't feel like almost anything mattered up until BMO was shattered apart. I caught Martin as Mr M and immediately wondered if he discorporated and then was put into a suit to keep his essence together, but now that you mention it, seeing his hot dog red skin on his toes really gave him being alive away. I actually really liked the Grey Elf thing, That's one of the things I thought was pretty ingenious. But yeah, rambling aside, i really hope the rest of the show is either set in post finale Ooo, or set in 2k+ GMW

The way you talked about Adventure Time's classic intro reminded me of an idea I've had before. If an Adventure Time movie is ever made for theatres, it should start with a recreation of the intro with the same music. The title card after the intro will read "THE MOVIE", and it will fade to black, and the movie will start. That concept is literally all I want if Adventure Time becomes a movie.

Martin talking about ‘kids always calling out their deadbeat parents’ is kind of a weird line since this episode is a prequel and he hasn’t found Finn yet
@sharonspears-mandeville23694 жыл бұрын
Yeah,that..And oddly,thinking about it-Maybe Martin HIMSELF was ( _PROBABLY_ ) raised by a single parent/set of parents whom may have been deadbeat themselves and it had an effect on him,leading him to probably run away and become a gadget-lover thief,trader and scoundrel that later met Dr.Minerva,got into a relationship with her-which also meant that he went clean-eloped (which I'm LUCKILY GUESSING/THEORIZING here..since I don't think that I saw a marriage certificate in the "photo frame"-part of the relationship-montage from Minnie and Marty,so I'm healthily guessing/implying that they privately eloped before having Finn-also implying that Finn's mom still kept/keeping her maiden name while Finn legally got martin's last name at birth here,honestly-until the tiger lady and her goons broke in and..you get the idea..) and had Finn.. Or,in short: _Martin probably was a child/victim of Deadbeat parents/a deadbeat parent himself and knew how that feeling felt,leading him to become a runaway and thief/scoundrel,found his way to founder's island (maybe as a passenger/young seafarer/refugee from the mainland) and made/took to his trade-probably years-before he met Minerva (Finn's bioMom),so he has previously felt/known that pain,honestly-so.._

So to elaborate for Olive's motives, I will explain the timeline as I interpret it. 1. An unknown individual or individuals creates the Drift, staffing it with hundreds of drones to maintain the space station and establish order. 2. Over time the drones are lost, destroyed or damaged, and since there is nowhere on the space station where they can be repaired or new ones created, the station starts to fall into disrepair. 3. Olive travels to earth in search of someone to repair the Drift, finding Hugo, a clearly intelligent individual, and brings him back to the station. 4. Hugo,.seeing the situation the station is in and figuring most people living on the station will spend most of their time helping themselves, figures it's more worthwhile to use his time plundering the drift for resources to make his own smaller space station staffed by those he can trust. 5. Olive , realizing it's mistake, heads back to Earth to find someone more empathetic to try and counter Hugo's influence.

Loved your analysis! As always I loved your cogent perspective. How content were you with the writing? There were definitely a few moments where I felt it lacked the typically airtight continuity that I so closely associate with AT, such as Martin joking about kids "always calling out their deadbeat dad" despite the absence of his contact with Finn since the guardian scene. Despite this, I loved having a far-out reach for a universe I have fallen in love with. The lore ties being present even in such a remote outpost is something I both appreciate, and take issue with, but nonetheless, it felt just right in regards to the series' position as a satellite post-finale hurrah. Hope you're doing good. :)
@uncivilizedelk4 жыл бұрын
I had no problem with Martin's line because I was already aware of the timeline before the ending stinger, so I saw it as joke based on dramatic irony - Martin makes a comment that the audience knows is applicable toward him in the future. It's basically Martin doing a self-own but not realizing it yet. I think a lot of people who first assumed BMO takes place post-finale misplaced the source of the humor as coming from Martin's personal experience (rather than just him making a standard jerky comment), and then are having a hard time rectifying that, thus attributing it to an error in the writing. But yeah, overall I felt the writing wasn't quite to the levels of my most beloved Adventure Time episodes, but it also wasn't worse than some of the writing in AT episodes I didn't care for.

19:00 i feel like the series has established that the blue catalyst comet (which might represent finn) caused the crater. in the farmworld episode the comet missed it bc ice king stopped the mushroom bomb and started an ice age, so there was no ice age. i feel like the meaning is that finn was summoned to earth to fight the lich (and other agents of evil). farmworld finn might be explained as a different version of finn that lacks the hero's spirit of the comet (as shown by him falling victim to the lich and returning to a relatively normal life with his family)

I think the fact that Finn grew up pretty fine was in big part thanks to PB. I've recently rewatched season 1 and looking at it again, after knowing the entire show, the whole lore developed later, and final versions of all the characters, it's hard not to see Bonnie as subtly overlooking Finn's upbringing.

Welp i think the episode was alright. I've always thought BMO was an adorable yet weak character, and it shows here. Even though I can say that I like his character I can't say I'm that emotionally attached to him to feel invested, unlike Marceline, Jake or Finn, heck I feel like Peppermint Butler is more interesting and his especial will be better. Not to say BMO is a bad character or anything, I think he works just fine as a supporting character, but I've never been a fan of the episodes when he plays a major role 🤷♀️, just a personal thing tho. So... overall I thought the episode was fine, I really liked the addition of Martin in this especial, additional lore details that were pretty neat, and i guess Y5 was cool. Well, let's see what "Obsidian" brings us! I'm actually really genuinely excited for this episode, since I'm a sucker for Princess Bubblegum and Marceline action, and I think a 44 mins Varmints would work wonderfully! (Since I've always thought the episode should be longer anyways) Though it can still be bad... well I guess we'll see!

Ok this might be a long shot but I think the promo shot at 25:00 only shows 4 of the episodes, bmo's episode has all three main characters, princess b and marcy are next to what looks like a new candy person, pep but looks like hes with the new girl and maybe the hand at the bottom of the screen, and finn's sword looks like its crossing with a catalyst comet. So maybe each episode has three main characters and the final episode is gonna be a surprise, maybe even a continuation of shermy and beth's story.

When you showed that scene where BMO pulled that bit of mustache off of Finns face I was laughed, I've watched every single Adventure Time episode and had never seen that.

i felt my heart warm with the last scene, i felt like jake was at that point at his criminal phase, and thats why finn does not remember it and its surprised when jake brings it up. finn looks around 5 or 6, and any later than that and he would have questioned what jake had been doing, also the punk-ish clothes. And seeing jake while in this angry, pretty agressive moment on his life being content and patient with finn, doing such a dumb game as letting him play with his wood sword and a branch, made me love him so much. He took a role he probably did not want that much, was not obligated (we have seen the presence of at least one orphanage on the series), for his adopted brother, while having really different ideas and morals at the moment, and doing so with a placid smile on his face. :) he looks like a late teen, early twenties guy? imagine that. maybe thats why he is half the "fun and sometimes roudy person" with finn while other times he is overprotective and so so proud of seeing finn grow. he was basically a teen dad, juggling his overpowering love and need to protect his baby brother, and his rowdy life and trying to let finn be because knows how it was to be so young, and not wanting to worry him like he had to be to take care of this small child.
@ulkaalcachofajorquera57564 жыл бұрын
maybe thats why BMO took the role of another child for him! as BMO said in the finale, jake was basically the "papa" of both. BMO arrives like this tiny giggling baby robot and jake just decides that he can take him too, why not? it was literally seconds but my mind ran away with that scene and made me love jake and his sacrifices. yeah maybe he was absent later in the life of his own pups, bu maybe jake incstints of fatherhood came from the knowledge that finn *needed* him, while his pups just needed him for a short ammount of time so he did not get as much of an intense experience as he got raising finn? in the episode they are born he seems super worried for them, and does not want to let them out of his sight. and thats the only part of parenthood he did not experience with finn! baby moments. im a big fan of your videos, i dont agree always but you make me so so happy! i feel like i have a friend who is telling me their opinion on something i really really like and it makes me stop and think myself. have a great life!

Before I realized this was a prequel I actually came up with my own explanation why Martin was back. We know he accepted nirvana in The Comet... but imagine if the comet got to know Martin and evicted him from it. Like it would be the ultimate fuck you to such a bad guy if he ascended to a higher plane of existence only to be spat back out in disgust.

Always great to hear from you again. Especially since you to have things to say that I hadn't thought of. You had a particularly interesting take on the flashback, saying that two "mushroom bombs" went off. I had interpreted what was visualized in the scene as two generic nukes, made large to symbolize the war as a whole. Since they lacked the definitive screaming faces, I didn't associate them with The Lich's bomb. Of course real nukes aren't green in color, but I chalked it up to artistic license, since green tends to be affiliated with radiation in fiction. Thinking about it has lead me to further consider if the color is important, and if we were to theory-craft, I might suggest that these green bombs illustrate that, as the war progressed, advancements were being made with nukes that ultimately culminated in the creation of the mushroom bomb. If they were indeed saying that two of these bombs existed, and were used, it would significantly change our current understanding of the event, and I think would be something they would have to come back to in some way.

This kind of felt like a bridge between AT and Midnight Gospel. I also wonder if BMO and Y5 stayed in touch, and BMO would tell her stories about Finn and Jake, except the way BMO tells stories it would come out as Fionna and Cake, and Y5 turned it into a tv show, which is how it got beamed into Ice King's head and recorded on that old lady's tapes.

@Uncivilized Elk Re: your question at 22:09, Olive's caress of Hugo is not really about forgiveness, but rather about unconditional love. It's the sort of detail I think Adventure Time is known for, and reminds me of other greats like Avatar: The Last Airbender. The message is that no one is truly evil, but that anyone can fall out of balance and become an agent for evil. It is the role of friends to help fallen people tap into their better natures and get back up on their moral feet. Hugo has gone through a lot- his world exploded after all, and in his suffering he allowed himself to rationalize his transformation into a reflexively selfish, exploitative creature. But even though Olive betrayed him, bringing BMO to The Drift in order to defeat him, Hugo shows no anger toward Olive, merely fear that Olive disapproves of who he has become. He shows clear relief when Olive tenderly touches him, and perhaps even gratitude that Olive stopped him from doing something truly evil, killing off an entire society for his own survival ends. It's also worth noting that for all his substantial faults, Hugo is not a bigot towards sentient non-lifeforms in an episode where such bigotry is a theme, as displayed by Y5's mother (and Y5 at the start of the episode). We should note that while Hugo wasn't willing to apologize in his final speech, he did make an effort rationalize his exploitation of the Drift's inhabitants by labeling it "collateral damage.” Of course, it was a far worse crime then that: perhaps the fact he felt the need to minimize it in order to live with himself foreshadows his self-awareness when responding to Olive in the next scene- he’s not actually a psychopath as much as he pretends to be. Hugo is capable of seeing right from wrong. His shame when confronted by his better half, and the palpable relief he expressed when she reassured him that she still loved him revealed Hugo to be a character capable of redemption. What a beautiful, touching way to end a profound episode, turning a cartoonish villain into a complex antihero at the last moment, a final twist for the viewer to ponder. Welcome back, Adventure Time!

I think a lot of the jokes in this episode aren't suppose to be funny 1 liners because they were well crafted jokes, rather funny because BMO told them and they derive their humor from the fact that BMO is so innocent and an absolute cutie

All I wanna say is that I don't think void caster is a species, and that all members of the species can do void magicks, I think it's just like a school of magic like pyromancy or something. The giant void caster we saw in the space prison place just happened to be the same species as the merchant on the rift.
