Adventure Adrift

Күн бұрын

Hundreds of miles offshore the Mexican coast lie a group of remote islands, have you heard of them? The Revillagigegos are volcanic islands home to sharks, manta rays, turtles, dolphins and so many fish! Sailing to Soccoro, we go jump in the water with them all, and sail all around the island in good weather and bad.

I recommend bringing along extra long lines in your dingy when you dive. As we usually pull our dingy along when we dive in places that have a fragile ecosystem [ie. coral reefs etc] or too deep [ie. ridges]. Unless you plan to dive in and out of caves etc, after a while you usually don't notice you're towing your dingy. Best part is, when you're ready to surface, your dingy is always nearby. This method is also perfect for drift diving.

Another great episode. We are wondering if you think it would be worth the effort to head out to those islands without scuba gear. We would just have mask/snorkel/fins to explore the underwater life with. We are heading down to Mexico this Fall/Winter. Love the idea of seeing those mantras close up.

Really nice U/W footage! Are you using a red filter on the gopro? Loved hearing how you are careful of how and where you anchor the dingy during a dive. How much anchor rode do you carry on your dingy? Safe sailing!
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 жыл бұрын
Yes we are using a red filter for most of the diving and have had to play with the gopro settings to get the best colour. One of us jumps in first and the other hands the anchor over so we can lower it down onto an area without coral and then we readjust when below, currently we have just under 70ft of anchor line.

what kind of paperwork do you need to sail there?? whats the protocol like?
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 4 жыл бұрын
At the time we visited, you needed to have Mexico's version of a National Park pass for all people onboard (from CONANP), then you apply to Conanp for a special permit to visit by private vessel - they ask you for a bunch of details about your boat and your intentions for the visit and then they will mail you (by post) a permit valid for the dates you request. When you arrive at Isla Socorro (the main island), you call the military by VHF to check in - they will verify your permit and may come aboard for an inspection. All is pretty easy to do, and things may be changing, as the place is growing in popularity.

Maybe instead of installing markers underwater, unesco should install permanent moorings so thousands of cruisers don't ruin the reef with anchors. Not everyone is as careful as you guys with your hook.
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 жыл бұрын
Jack you have a point, the recommendation from the parks and the other dive boats is to try and live boat if you can not dive and set your hook without damaging the bottom.
