I can't express how much I love this channel. I can relate to these more than any nature/adventure show on television. You guys hike without trying to "get anywhere" and instead stop to enjoy the nature that you are passing through. Plus, you bring your experiences as a kid along with you into nature, whether it's from video games, movies, or books. You do an amazing job of showing that you don't have to get involved in some extreme sport or become a bearded wild man to connect with nature, and that its ok to bring the inspiration from our childhood along with us as we age and explore the world around us. Also, as someone from Indiana I have been to several of the places in your videos, including North Manitou. One of my favorite memories ever is waking up with friends on the sand dunes overlooking Lake Michigan and enjoying a relaxing breakfast without any sense of rush. One reason I like watching your videos of places I have been to is that it makes me excited to go back someday and to notice the things I didn't the first time around--because you do a great job of pointing out all the different plants, animals, and just downright cool things that might go unnoticed. Awesome content!

I happened upon this video when searching for some Michigan wilderness. I lived in MI for 51 years then last year moved to FL. There's not much wilderness in Key West and I long for and miss Michigan's beauty so much! Did this hike, 3 nights four days, this past Memorial weekend. The place really does feel special, as soon as you get there. If you love history, the nostalgia of the place is almost tangible. The old logging trucks, barns, ruins, houses; it really makes you try and visualize how life played out there almost a hundred years ago. The old cemetery, even, gives off an odd, tranquil feeling. Add that to the fact that you're on an island in the middle of Lake Michigan away from civilization, living out of a pack, and it's quite the experience. There are so many places in the world to see, but this one I'd definitely love to see again. Nice video!

Thanks for another great episode. I've seen a few of your newer ones over the years but I finally decided to start from the beginning. I like all your music but I especially enjoy your theme song (and the quieted down version in this episode or part 1 (I forget) and Bryan's guitar solo in one of your past episodes, the one he soloed on in a short. I wasn't able to understand some of your plant identifications, so maybe you could speak a little slower and more distinctly for we old folk? I found the sorrel(?), mushrooms, and garlicky thing most interesting, although I didn't understand what you called the garlicky thing. I've had wild onions before when I've been out hiking on the trails and some kind of wild berries, but I don't remember much else. LOL It's good that you all have so much in common and can enjoy these forays out into the wilds together and share them with everyone. There must be a back story to all this which I'd love to hear. Unfortunately, the interview you posted a bit ago is no longer available.

Personally it's hard to choose because both islands are quite amazing. If you ever visit South Manitou you HAVE to go to the west side where the sand dunes are. It's a bit of a hike to get up to the top but totally worth it because you can see so much from where you're standing. My friend and I went last month and saw a part of Door County in Wisconsin from the far western point of the island.

To tell you the truth we've only camped at a campsite once while we were there (in this episode actually) and it was pretty crowded. If you can't get into the back country, my personal recommendation would actually be to rent a small cabin. That's more or less what we used to do and I have such good memories for that. Haha probably not the most helpful response I know, but the dunes are so awesome it probably doesn't matter where you camp or stay at. Have fun! -Robby

South Manitou has cooler landmarks to see. Such as some ridiculously huge old growth cedars, better shipwrecks and historic buildings, and more impressive dunes than north manitou. But just as a heads up, I think you have to camp in designated camp sites only, which are usually pretty populated during the summer and that doesn't seem like your style. North allows you to feel a lot more isolated from urban life, especially when you camp on the western side of the island where you can't see any mainland or other islands and can just see the open lake.

I believe that tree you climbed is a prayer tree and the one beside it was a direction tree, both used by Native Americans, from all that I can see in this video. You can youtube it or google it to find more information out about them.

Brilliant hack with the keychain on your cup/cook pot. I'm going to do that when I get home. How did you get to know so many different plants and vegetation? Did you take classes? Internet searches? It's fascinating, but I'd love to know where to start. Thanks again.

Jim Maltese Yeah, that ring made it so much more useful. The rubber handle kept oozing away. Do you have the same/similar cooking pot? I started by ID'ing trees, then I took a class which went over a few local wildflowers. But reddit has a great subreddit called "whatsthisplant" where people help you ID plants. So whenever I hike, I try photographing things I don't know and IDing them via the internet. Thanks! -Andrew

AdventureArchives I do have the same pot/cup. Mine came with the two plastic cups which I still keep in there, but might be better served by filling it with something else. I'm still tweaking my day pack a bit. I actually just bought a knock-off solo stove that fits inside a larger pot, so I'm looking forward to playing with that. That's great advice on the plant IDs, and makes total sense. Slow and steady learning and adding to the knowledge arsenal. I appreciate the "food reviews" you guys give for the foraged plants. I'm a little nervous to try it on my own because there are so many plants that look similar that may be dangerous, so I'm thinking going out with someone who could say "Eat this not that" would be the way to go. Big fan! What month did you guys go there to? I'm planning my next expedition there and want to make sure the black flies and mosquitoes are at minimal. I went to Porcupine Mountain backpacking last month in May, it's an amazing place. It's so diverse from forest to beach, beach to mountain, mountain to sky, and mountains to river trails. Best time to go is the end of August so I plan to go do it again. Keep up the great work & Cheers!

Cerdan Teama By the way, on the Stanley cooking cup, if you take the key ring slightly off on the cover lid holder, the key ring will stand up and you can easily grab it or pick it up with the stick. I have the same set up.

Cerdan Teama Thanks for the kind words! We went around early july, which is actually probably the worst time for black flies and mosquitos. We got lucky on Manitou because it was breezy enough to deter the bugs. Generally during the summer the bugs are a problem so i'd plan maybe early autumn. Bring bug spray, and open breezy areas don't have many bugs

My wife and I just got back from the N M island. Man you we're kidding about the mosquitoes, it's Jurassic!, as soon as the sun went down, HAHA! The island is gorgeous! We love every minute we were there. I'm planning on doing it again in late Aug. I'll let you know how the bugs are. For now, I'm planning on Yellowstone in 2 weeks. Hope to see you guys on the trail someday. Cheers!

Awesome video! Was someone else with you? At one point all three of you are walking toward the camera....and someone else is holding it and waking backwards I think. Do people still live on this island or are all of those houses abandoned? Thanks again for the info and videos!

Brian Lucas It was a bear! Naw, yeah someone did come with us but didn't wanna be on camera. It's funny, I think you're the first person to notice that. Yeah actually, I think the park ranger we talked to said there was still one person who lived on the island, but all the other houses are abandoned and maintained by the park. I think South Manitou Island has more people living on it though. Thanks for watching!

i've seen videos of people using hammocks on N. Manitou, However I would reach out to the park service up there to double check if you wanna be extra sure.

There are no restrictions on hammocks on North Manitou or on any public land in Michigan -state or federal- where a tent is permitted. I have used mine on the island.

We used Sony Vegas Pro in our early videos, its relatively simple but decent video editor that is a good place to start for beginners. However, it has limitations and we now use Adobe premiere, which is more complex, but vastly superior. ~Bry
