Many yachts are made of plastic and have a keel; if they react quickly, they have a chance to return to deep water. But on many and all yachts there is not a single thing visible that will help other rescuers with a diesel engine pull the yacht into deep water without damaging the rudder. To pull out into deep water, you will need to slowly pull the yacht back, centimeter by centimeter at a time, removing it from the coastal soil.

Well done for helping out! I do marine rescue work and one thing to remember in these situations is that the crews on distressed vessels will often make bad decisions due to the panic and stress they are experiencing. You guys were calm and gave clear directions which is exactly the right thing to do. The boats trying to get a line onto the distressed yacht probably should have floated the tow line in using a fender or buoy rather than getting so close that they needed to be rescued themselves. Lots of lessons learned here! As a side note, the Mayday at the beginning for the vessel taking on water in the anchorage should probably have been a Pan Pan.
@adventurecrews6 ай бұрын
All great information here thank you for commenting! Also agree with the Pan Pan but as you could tell from the audio this guys was freaking out while upside down in his bilge radioing for help. The float is a great point and one that I had not even thought of - Cole

Back in he late 80's a retired navy guy bought a $200K 32' NEW sailboat from where I worked. No GPS then only paper charts, parralel rules, compass, etc.He knew NOTHING abt. sailing. He was supposed to LEAVE, but every morning something would be broken that we'd have to fix. Like the compass light... he must've unhooked it at night so we'd have to fix it the next day. We had a 100 pt. check list on all new boats so EVERYTHING was working when he stepped foot on. After a week of delays (fixing things he'd sabotage at night) he finally left, after his wife & kids drove back home (they were supposed to sail with him). He left not with paper charts, but with a TEXACO ROAD MAP. He hit 2 RRoad brigde bulk heads & ran onto rocks... was towed into a marina 12 mile away & hauled out as the boat was sinking. TRUE STORY!

These anchor dragging problems should have never have happened. The sailor wanna-bees should have put out TWO anchors in a "V" pattern from the bow with proper scope (7:1; 7 feet or rode for every 1 foot of depth) when anchoring in a harbor, especially overnite. This can be accomplished in close mooring quarters also. Also, be familiar with what's around you if you do drag and ANTICIPATE. That's the whole secret of safely sailing: Anticipate.

Thank you! It really depends on the policy that you are looking for and where you want to keep the boat during hurricane season. We wanted more time in the Bahamas last year and well as you know we got that but we had to take a policy that had the high deductible. So it kinda goes hand in hand.

SAR procedures for assisting a vessel in distress are: fire off a flare in the vicinity of the vessel in distress. Four short blast on the air horn, repeat a minute later. Make a radio distress call with location, Lat Long. Just because you can't hear them doesn't mean they can't hear you. Then go help.

@johnmagnan7597 ай бұрын
with modern technology today and a little thing on the chart plotter called an anchor alarm there is no excuse for dragging anchor and running aground. Back in my day we sailed with paper charts because GPS navionics were too expensive for the average sailor. Our inshore navigation was LoranC. If I ever get to do it over again I'm going to be spoiled with modern navionics and push button sailing.

When you are in your dinghy attempting to rescue, similarly the other boats, perhaps you should anchor up wind, and let yourself back to the boat in distress. So you are not relying on your motor which could easily get swamped, or hit bottom. Then pull in with their main anchor and set that. (A SAR rescue craft will have a water jet, so not be at risk).

What would be cool is an "anchor pulley", an anchor with a pully on it. You drop the anchor way offshore with a line through the pulley, one end on the boat, another onshore than you can pull the boat from shore as the tide comes in (Ideally, don't know if this would actually work).

Guys, you are a bad luck magnet! If I ever see you anchoring near me, I'm weighing anchor immediately! Only joking. 😁

If you see us anchoring next to you...know we will be there to help if you have issues.

Wow, in 25+ yrs of cruising I have done a number of rescues like this and I know for sure saved a couple of lives. But goodness not in the short time that you have been out there. Wow. So good and critical to give help. Mariners stick together!

Great episode crew! So many channels will show something bad here and there but never seen a compilation like this. Well done on the edit and well done for all you did to help those in need! Take Care of You!
