The Lost RAVENSCAR Station - What Remains?

We look into the story of Ravenscar and the Town That Never Was.
Built in the late 1890's and planned to be the next big tourist town on the North Yorkshire coast.
In this episode we take a look at the abandoned Ravenscar Station on the Scarborough to Whitby Railway Line, and then we venture down to Ravenscar Tunnel for a little explore.

Great stuff Darren. I spent my honeymoon at Ravenhall back in 1976. Lots of great memories tinged with sadness as my wife died some years ago. Keep up the good work, you do a splendid job

Again looking at your video It was very interesting amazing how those tunnels are still in good condition predominantly with no maintenance nothing done to them for years if it had been built today it would’ve fallen down after two or three

There was no water tank at Ravenscar on either platform. On the village side of the station at the Whitby end there was a grounded van body used for storage (it was at the goods yard end). The station buildings, such as the booking office were at the mid point of the station. There is a concrete plinth on the far side of the track bed as the main entry steps. This was for the waiting rooms on the Whitby bound platform, which was a timber structure.

Very interesting as I lived in that area until 1972. Lots of history are you doing the alum works next and the old brickyard. I used to cycle up there on Sundays to watch the steam trains climbing the 1 in 39 with a well patronised scenic excursion, one Sunday there was 3. What a bonus.

Hi me and my wife have walked ravenscar to Whitby along cliffs and then back along old train line (cinder trail) absolutely fantastic scenery worth the effort

When I were a lad in the 1970s, I visited Ravenscar on holiday, and the railway path led straight through the tunnels. Never understood why they were closed off.

There is a second lost/ planned seaside town resort on the line at Kettleness, unlike Ravenscare the station is intact, also the walk from Sandsend to Runswick bay you can walk most of the line. Like Revenscare most of Kettleness was not built, it had a similar issue in no real access to the so-called beach. Whitby Jet was also mined from nearby, and I think maybe to some extant still.

Great video & very informative fades! I used to go to Raven Hall Hotel occasionally as a child with my family. It was quite a treat as it was considered very posh. I recall sitting in the warm quiet protection of my room, with a big sash window overlooking Robin Hoods Bay, on a crisp & windy November Day, mid last century (that makes me feel old!). Quite a spectacular location!

Brilliant video, the cinder track is also part of the national cycle network and is a great ride, it starts in the corner of a supermarket car park in Scarborough but you can jump on it anywhere as it crosses a few roads etc on the way to Whitby 👍

Nicely done and I love the transitions. Ravenscar is also the end point of the Lyke Wake Walk. A 40 mile walk you are supposed to complete within 24hrs. My dad completed it back in the day he was telling me.

I travelled that line once, in around 1962. The memory of the fabulous scenery has stayed with me all these years. It's amazing that the station at Ravenscar stayed open until the whole line closed in 1965, given the small population.

It is a brilliant day out on the bikes! I did it twice this summer, which makes me wish they had incorporated the tunnel into the cycleway... still, I detoured for a walk in the tunnel in the cool air! A very welcome thing after the climb from Robin Hoods Bay in the sun 🥵 its just a tough job getting back out when youre pushing a bike!

Imagine the Alum mine being dug up by industrial earth moving machines, belching out smoke and dust in manufacturing bricks for a successful development.Can't see it being the same today with all that manufacturing and consequent development happening.

Imagine if they had not removed the spectacular bridges how huge the Heritage Rail Tourist crowds would be queuing for a ride Scarborough to Whitby and beyond with spectacular view over cliffs and rugged North Sea Coast sad all was smashed up so soon before it’s value was understood…having been on Tallylyn North Norfolk and other line u view from train is totally different to a car

The closure of the section between Whitby and Loftus save the tax payer over £500,000 in maintenance costs alone for the period 1958 to 1961. Each storm with winds giving a pressure reading of 28lb/sq. ft would lead to all traffic being suspended until the viaduct at Staithes had been inspected for damage less another Tay Bridge disaster occured. BR's closure if the line just reflected the LNER's view of the line.

Good interesting video showing the beauty of Ravenscar . We rode the Cinder track yesterday Scarborough to whitby passing through Ravenscar it would be great if the tunnel could be made safe to cycle through like they have done on other cycle tracks . Its amazing how the steam engines coped with the gradients there are some very long uphill / downhill stretches in stunning coastal scenery which you captured with great skill.

Such a shame so much was lost under the short sighted Beeching plan. If the lines were lightly used at the time they should have been mothballed instead of having all their infrastructure ripped up and the land sold off and built on. So difficult and costly to reopen these lines after the damage has been done. Some of those communities which lost their rail links have expanded over the years and are now crying out to have a train service. I see York - Beverly and also Harrogate - Northallerton via Ripon are both candidates for possible reopenings. I really hope these schemes happen. It does make you wonder if money will be forthcoming for them post covid though.

There is no beach, so it was never going to be as popular as Whitby and Scarborough. What surprises me is how little was made of Cattersty Sands at Skinningrove, where the beach is fantastic.

@@robelvery you're forgetting that Beeching was tasks with cutting costs the coastal lines from Teesside to Scarborough were never money makers. Just how long would you have envisaged mothballing them? 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? And just who would be paying for it? Sorry, but the country could not afford it then and the way we vote for the party that promises to tax us the least we never will. Take for example The Bramley Line through Cambridgeshire has been mothballed the last 20 or so years, and before it could be reopened it will need all of the level crossings replacing including the one over the A47 (can you see a new level crossing over such a busy route?) As well as all ov ghe trees and and other plant life removing from the trackbed. And then there's the signalling that will need to be upgraded to meet modern standards. So much for mothballing. The coastal routes out of Whitby were never money makers. The NER, which provided the trains for the ljne since opening, bought the Whitby and Scarborough Railway from the original owners for half of what it cost to build. Prior to the line opening the NER had build a Scarborough facing junction at Rillington Junction to allow faster connections between Whitby and Scarborough. It lasted about a year and was quietly removed as very few people wanted to travel on the route.

Ravenscar Station in the last days of the station a signalman Jack Tidy and his wife a Nurse in Scarborough Hospital Jack signalled trains based in the signalbox at the station it was the duty of the signalman to issue tickets Jack and his wife lived 2 Station square remember visiting many time Jack was made redundant and transferred to Naburn swing bridge box on York Shelby line after closure he transferred to Poppleton on York Harrogate line he trained me as I signalman at Poppleton in 1978 I got his job when he retired.

This line was part of a scheme to link Scarborough to Tyneside via Whitby and Teesside and was initially proposed around 40 years before it was opened to traffic, by which time other faster had been opened. Making this line unneeded. Even the NER couldn't get sufficient passenger traffic for their direct Whitbybto Scarborough service c.1865 using a Scarborough facing junction at Rillington Junction, a service than barely lasted a year.
