Goodness good luck. I couldn't stand CC students when I was there as a student! No idea how the professors handle it. I know one guy that teaches 15 classes a year at CC... he says he enjoys it... he needs to be studied in a laboratory lol

Community colleges are accredited because four-year universities recognized that the classes they teach give equivalent education and standards of learning as they do. I went to an Ivy League school for undergrad, and there were plenty of professors there as well who knew nothing about teaching. I had to do most of the learning on my own. Guess what, it is the same standard as community colleges expect. Because it's COLLEGE! Because it is assumed you are no longer a child but an ADULT with capacity for learning! If you don't read the textbook... guess what, you won't learn! If you don't complete the homework... guess what, you won't learn! If you don't ask questions when you are confused... guess what, you won't learn! If you text during class instead of taking notes... guess what, you won't learn! Your grade must be a reflection of your learning. You signed up for a class because you agreed you will learn the material. Not plea for "extra credit" two weeks before the final exam! And for that matter, shouldn't "extra credit" mean extra learning? Not "oh-my-god I just realized I haven't done any of the work and put in no effort to learn anything, but I want a good grade anyway."

You should note that people go to ivy league schools because of networking which leads to better job prospects and basic employment. Not everyone with a degree is getting employed you know

+pkay dennis But you don't need to be an ivy league student for networking. You just need to know people in ivy leagues. That is how I went to Google and worked there while going to just a state college. But I took advantage of going to ivy league campuses and networking there.

I attended community college a number of years ago, and, while it is not Harvard, it is more challenging than high school. Your academic participation in that setting needs to be on a more adult level, and you have to be responsible for everything that you do. Your parents can no longer be involved in your education, except for possibly being the ones to pay for your college experience.

I've been teaching in CC for some time now. A few years ago a student did not hand in a paper. After a week i asked her why and she told me she didn't have ink for her computer. When i suggested that maybe she should buy more she said with a straight face " That's my father's job". Then she had that gall to ask me why I gave her an "F" She registered for the class with me again a year later but dropped out when I wouldn't carry over her work from the previous semester.

I spent a year and a half at community college before transferring to a four-year school. I started 14 years after high school and I didn’t learn APA in high school...I was still able to do papers requiring APA format just fine. In Ed Psych, when half the students didn’t do well on their papers, the professor spent a good portion of class explaining why some folks didn’t do well.

@commcollprof I got a 4.0 my first semester :) I only took science and math courses though, so I didn't need to write that many papers. Hopefully when I need to take my writing class, I'll pay attention to the formatting rules and avoid Tiffany's fate.

My community college general ed classes on the 101 level during the Fall/Spring semesters were little more than glorified high school classes, but Summer classes brought in students who were pretty serious about their work. Once I finished the Gen Ed classes and started working on my major-specific courses the atmosphere started to resemble a setting one would associate with college: Demanding coursework, no babysitting, and success/failure largely determined by the student's focus. Combine this with having my core/major specific courses only being available at night for the most part and all of the bullshit depicted by this video disappeared.

I'm not sure how community colleges work elsewhere, but in our state no one can be hired as a part-time/full-time professor without at least a master's degree. More of my colleagues have a Ph.D., actually. I also think it's a bit misleading to compare those 11th grade classrooms to "most community college classrooms" unless you've actually observed *most* of them. There is a wide variety of structure & quality of instruction in community colleges, but that's true about universities too.

When I was tutoring, I had a student at Citrus College. She had no idea what to do about College Algebra. I asked if she had read her textbook and she told me that she never read her textbook, she never read books. I told her that she had to at least read the book and she stormed away crying. That chick was an idiot and she had no business being in college, even at community college.

No doubt. I have a friend that teaches psyc & criminology at a CC. She had a student write a paper on gun control & crime patterns. The student got an F & contested the grade. It was graded as an F again. The student pulled the old those that can't do teach line & said "a real criminologist would pass me." Thats where I come in. I am a forensic psych/criminologist & I read the paper. I was stunned at how bad it was. Info was wrong,no citations etc. Stunning this was turned in for a college class

I'm sorry to hear that. Ours is better than the one my undergrad university had, but we are fortunate to be a community college whose funding has remained relatively steady despite our state's economic crisis. I know this isn't the case everywhere.

Folks, if you think the kids' sense of entitlement they sometimes display is bad? Look at some of the middle aged students that attend due to being out of a job. All day long they don't really pay attention in class, instead complain how there are not any jobs for them, inspite of the fact that there are plenty of them, just not the ones they happen to like. My dad, a 60+ year old machinist, was able to get an interview inside a week of applying. He tells me it's the kids in class that behave.

I felt for Tiffany when she said that it was community college not Harvard. I have been in 11th grade classrooms with more structure and teaching skills than most community colleges. Lately, they are hiring their recent college graduates to teach classes. It's unnerving how unreliable education sources have been. All my feelings definitely changed when he said he had a PHD. I don't care who you are you have to respect anyone teaching who is a DR. Whether you agree with them or not.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone who goes to a community college are idiots. I know that's not what the uploader was trying to suggest I just wanted to say that in response to the people who think they're hot shots because they pay 40k+ for their fancy schools and think they're getting a better education than everyone else.

@03:28 just to stay on her parent's insurance---so true. Apparently, CC teachers need to realize this. Many students, especially young ones, also have jobs that are INFLEXIBLE regarding school schedules, and CC instructors are apparently ignorant and mention the "campus resources"---as if CC students really have that "academic luxury"? CC instructors just promote their "academic arrogance" and blame students for being lazy and unmotivated--which is true--but many don't have time/resources.

Wow -- you're whining over here too. You have access to the world on the internet if you use the information facilities properly and deeply. And have you ever heard of interlibrary loan? The specialists will get you any peer-reviewed professional articles you want if you give them a little running time. Of course, that means you have to know what you want and what you are doing, before the last minute. No matter what happens, none of it was ever your fault, right? Hell of a life priority.

CC resources, e.g. the Career Center, library/writing center, career assessments, personal development courses-are a joke. Textbooks SOARING; managing even a 12-unit MINIMUM load-satisfactory progress for "financial aid" eligibility/auto/parent's health (transportation to campus--attendance required)-which CC profs/counselors push (good luck paying back loans in this economy-even if you do succeed--public transport unavailable to and from? Chronic health problems? Paying rent/bills? BUMMER!
