Our sail north continues towards the Chesapeake Bay as we navigate our way through the intracoastal waterway (ICW). We find our favorite and most beautiful spots of the ICW, experience a terrifying lightening storm, and have fun in our Carolina Beach anchorage. We arrive in the Chesapeake Bay where we have an amazing sail!

I know, it’s been a while since our last video. We found ourselves busier than we thought while in the Chesapeake, so spent the free time we had getting out and having some fun. We’ll be sailing for as long as we’re able to keep up our mid-life retirement lol, which we’re hoping will be a few years. We still can’t believe how far we’ve come so quick. Very thankful! -Mandi

I grew up near Beaufort, NC. I frequently saw the wild horses just across Taylor Creek from the Beaufort waterfront, much less frequently on Shackleford Banks.

Really enjoy your channel. Not sure what it is but there is something a tad different about yours virus other channels. You do capture real emotions or it appears you do. Your learning curve is very interesting to watch. So, what you might consider as a mistake or embarrassing, is educational and a good learning tool for your viewers. Keep it going and stay safe. I'm not sure where your current position is as I haven't made it through all the videos, but If you make it down south there is Cumberland Island that has wild (feral) horses. I spent several trips to that island trying to photograph a horse with the beach in the background. Finally got it.

Sorry you guys were on Carrot Island... Shakleford is a little bit further out.. Thta where all the horses are
@TakeTheWaters
@TakeTheWaters 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, your right! Good eye. We tried going a dinghy ride to shackleford but it was just getting to be too bumpy and wet of a ride, so we went back to carrot island. We’d seen pics and have heard stories of people seeing horses there too, so figured we’d give it a try. No horse sightings, but lots of horse poo! Maybe someone else will have better luck. -Mandi

Great water ways, no big waves. What does your boat draw n has shoaling been a problem
@TakeTheWaters

We have a 5’7” draft, but we always read the charts like we draw 6’. We soft grounded once when we first started sailing in the Florida ICW while leaving an anchorage (funny story). Otherwise we’ve never had a problem. We always read the charts very carefully, go slow when needed, read the reviews of others for certain areas, and stay alert when passing through them. The N.C. ICW is our favorite, amazing views! -Mandi

What is your mast height? We have a benetau Oceanis 41.1 with a 65ft mast. We would love to do the ICW down the Charlston but are a bit concerned about the bridges
@TakeTheWaters
@TakeTheWaters 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, our mast is 63.5. I wouldn’t go with a 65’ mast because there are 64’ bridges with little tide changes. All the bridges are supposed to be 65’ but thats not the case. -Brian

Hey Simon, Not sure of our future plans atm. We only had so much money to sail for two years and then Covid wiped out over a year of that while keeping us in the US. Many countries are shut down still like NZ and that was our original half way point. But we finally starting to cruise around the Bahamas, just made it to the Exumas yesterday and we're enjoying this beautiful place for now. It's a crazy world, but we're happy to just happy to be here and healthy for now. -Brian

You should ground your mast to the water in a storm another channel I watch sailing into freedom was just hit he was filming at the second that it hit but it blew 2 holes through the bottom of his boat where the propeller shaft comes through the haul you should go in and check out the strike the gang on sailing parlay was just struck too not too long so like I said get your self some heavy rubber covered cable and ground your mast over board to the water

Pro Tip: The Captain of the boat is the person who owns the boat and is responsible for all souls on board. Just because you are on the helm doesn't make you the captain you are just the helmsman and still need to take orders from the captain, period.. Now if you don't own the boat and are sailing it without the captain on board and you are legally responsible for the vessel then you are the captain for that time as you would be responsible for the souls on board and the vessel itself if you are sailing on waters where a captains licence is not required in the first place.
