@gdbynoe3 жыл бұрын
The main reason for buying a Food Saver is to be able to buy in bulk, repackage into single use packages (depending on the size of your family) and have the food last in perfect condition in the freezer for years. Your cheese block could easily have been cut into 3 or 4 smaller blocks and vacuumed. Lasts forever in the fridge. Big bags of chicken parts, beef steaks, lamb chops, stew, burger and sausage cuts/grinds can all be repackaged from bulk and then used as neccessary. Invaluable tool. The uses are endless.
@raqueldominguez61332 жыл бұрын
Question,do we have to seperate meats individually or can we vacuum seal a few together? I cook everyday and we are 6 and I do but in bulk and always use ziplock bags but these days am really want to buy more and freeze long term.
@gdbynoe2 жыл бұрын
@@raqueldominguez6133 if you buy in bulk and have the freezer storage you should package meats in the sizes that you would cook for your family or whole, like a rack of ribs, a whole salmon or side of salmon, whole chickens, whole pork cuts, lamb cuts, etc. I like to pack chops and steaks individually but of course you don't have to. Things like chicken wings I package by the bag, maybe a dozen or so in each bag. Chicken parts like legs, thighs, breasts, package them in multiples that you would feel ok with cooking at one time. I buy beef, lamb and goat stew in bulk and package it individual bags of a pound or two. Again, whatever size suits your family if you were cooking a stew or a curry. You can buy mega packs of hot dogs and break them down into smaller packs. Buy hamburger in bulk and make 2lb packs. I always find that you will get the best results from vacuum packing if you freeze whatever you are packing first. I lay everything out on a sheet tray in one layer and freeze. Works well and the food keeps its shape much better. Vacuum pack in one layer too so that your packs are thin and stack better in your freezer. I remove product from the vacuum bags before defrosting for the same reason of keeping it's shape. Also don't be afraid that you are not putting enough product in your bags. It's better to have smaller bags than bigger bags because if you need to cook more you can use 2 bags instead of one. Of course you can also take out the quantity you want to cook and then reseal your bag if the quantity in the bag is too much. Just think of your needs and do your thing. There really is no right or wrong.
@gdbynoe2 жыл бұрын
@@raqueldominguez6133 vacuum sealing will keep your meats frozen , in perfect condition, for years longer than a ziploc. You can also make and freeze food like chilli, pasta sauces, stews, etc., in rectangular Tupperware containers and then flip them out of the containers and vacuum pack the "bricks" for use whenever you want. There are no limits. Just use your imagination.
@GodfreyMann2 жыл бұрын
My main reason for buying one would be for sous vide cooking and avoiding freezer burns not bulk buying.
@gdbynoe2 жыл бұрын
@@GodfreyMann ammmmmmmm ... the only way to get freezer burns is to leave the food badly packaged in the freezer which usually is caused by buying more than you use quickly, i.e. buying in bulk. So please explain the difference.

I JUST got one of these and my journey starting this was exactly the same as yours. First bag, little too small, didn't get a good seal. Totally didn't notice the resealing zip top bags. As well as not realizing the lid had a lock if you go all the way up. But sealed cheese in them right away. Also it seems with the build-a-bag style as I call them. It's good to leave a lot of extra, because you cut, then wash, and re-seal if you want to reuse it.

Also, if you have a "short-ish" sized bag and you need to marinate something with liquid, you may fold up a sheet(s) of paper towel and put across the opening of the bag above the seal line. The paper towel will absorb the marinade.

I got some of the same questions from my other single friends. Why would I spend nearly $200 to save a few bucks? First and easiest answer is freezer burn. Second is that single people can't use the quantities of most ingredients they have to buy in order to cook regularly. I throw out almost a whole head of lettuce, half a tomato and half a pack of buns every time i decide I wanna cook a couple of burgers. I throw out more ingredients, more freezer burned leftovers, more old vegetables, breads and herbs than I'm comfortable admitting using my real name. Vacuum sealers aren't just for families; single people probably get more value and better meals using vacuum sealer than eating at Taco Bell four times a week, but they gotta stop looking at it like it's a $200 lunchmeat saver.

Can you use it to seal raw vegetables such as bell peppers/celery/cut apples/
@vikingshark26343 жыл бұрын
@@trudiecreed6315 Yes. It's easier to manage dry items cut into simple shapes (like apples, diced or slices vegetables etc) than it is to manage just about anything else with a vac sealer. Don't do whole apples but cut apples are fine, put some lemon juice on the slices. Some vegetables don't work well, aromatics (garlic and onions) and cabbage/lettuce because of whatever science-y gasses they release. Mushrooms and bananas, soft cheeses.....Food Saver comes with a list of 'don't seal these things' but it's a pretty short list.

I have a food saver unit. The first thing i put in it were fresh peaches. Even on the moist mode is sucked liquid into it. I tried cleaning it several times. To get the best result I have found that keeping a slight pressure on the lid helps. In addition I found it does not automatically vacuum and switch to the seal mode. So i watch and when the air is out of the bag I press the seal button. Keeping some pressure on the lid while sealing seems to help if you have a small wrinkle and it still seals.

Take a vault up and now buy a circulator, so that after you season and vacuum your roast, you can "sous vide" the meat then caramelize it when it is done. My favorite 'new' toys...the Anovo sous vide and the 6 qt Insta Pot. I've been using a Food Saver for quite a few years and couldn't live without it. BTW talk about saving money! Buy, for example a whole pork loin, and cut it however you want...roasts, dinner chops, breakfast chops and the trimming from the ends for stir fry. I've lost some in the freezer a couple times (like 3 yrs.) and it cooked up just fine. I know that FS says 5 times longer, but I'll challenge that. Enjoyed your video.

I *HIGHLY*! I cannot say enough I *HIGHLY* recommend using a paper towel when it comes to moist foods lost two food savers to the dreaded moist. You just put you food in first and then put a folded strip of paper towel in front of it and then seal it. Trust me! When it comes to ideas what to seal I have heard that you can make home made ice packs by simply adding ice to bags and sealing them. Also sealing important documents.

It is July 10, 2022 and about 2 months ago I bought the PowerXL Duo Sealer which was advertised on tv. I loved the idea and watching the video was very positive until I got it. The sealer/vacumn barely worked...the rest of the process was perfect but it sealed and vacumned when it wanted to. I spend about a week playing with it and finally sent it back. I believe I had a defective unit and told their customer service I'd send it back and re-order but they told me to just return it and they would refund me and were not supportive of my getting another one. That was a BIG flag telling me they were having lots of problems with it. They also sent 2 rolls of bags and said they were a years worth but I have a cake business too and using it for businss and home I could tell it wasn't enough. When I first got it I called to order more rolls and was told they were out. Now I'm searching for another that does similar things and perhaps this is it.

the reason that the vacuumed one is more flavored is probably because vacuum help the meat to suck the spaces in.

I vac-sealed half an avocado three days ago and it still looks fresh and green, no browning at all!

good thing about this kind of videos is that you can advance 5 minutes at a time, and watch about thirty seconds after each time, and you you won't miss anything.

ROTFL ;) Well... you're not wrong.

After watching your video I'm going to try my new food saver (finally) your advice (no wrinkles!) and your attitude. We eat a lot of avocados so I'm right there with your avo excitement. No more avocados in the compost! I am rejoicing.

Works great. My only thing, no way to do anythig much smaller than the bags that come with it. Be nice to have a bag half the smaller one but then sealing might be a problem.

Love my food saver, I buy meat in bulk at sams and Costco, never have any freezer burn. I'm not sure as I haven't opened them how well it worked but I vacuum sealed some old family photos, lol.

RoRo! Let me know how it goes! It seriously lives on my counter and on more than one occasion (as I'm moving) i've missed it and wished I'd packed it in my go bag!

Just bought my first food saver! We are new empty nesters as the kids are all in college now. I’m having to adjust my cooking amounts for only two people. The food saver will come in handy to store half the package of frozen green beans and extra chicken breasts! I came across some freezer burned Christmas cookie dough today.(it’s May). Next year I’ll vacuum seal my extra dough so we can have Christmas in July!

I have had a foodsaver for 7 years and saved a lot of money over the years, and my food last longer, cut the cheese and other items into smaller blocks if u want liquids freeze them first then vacuum them, the small bags with sealers on them don’t last that long.
@AdventuresinEverydayCooking2 жыл бұрын
I too have noticed that. I wish those bags would last longer! They are almost ALMOST one use (meaning just cheese until the cheese is gone, then toss). It's a bummer.

A foodsaver has been on my wish list for YEARS. Looks like I might have to bite the bullet and buy one. I’m pretty sick of buying meat when it’s on sale and then down the road reaching into the freezer for it only to find it freezer-burned. BLECH 🤢

Yes! It's such a bummer when that happens! Ugh ugh ugh! Santa should buy you one this year!!

My mom had a “Seal-a-meal” when I was growing up. Just bought my first FoodSaver at 54-years -old.

Isn't it curious how things come back around. I'm not sure why it ever left (as a useful tool) but I'm sure glad it's back!

I just found you today. I bought my Food Saver about 3 weeks ago and used it for the first time last weekend … I laughed at your giddiness because I did the same thing! It IS so much fun!

I feel like a whole generation of people (40-50) missed out on realizing the true value of the FoodSaver! Many of my friends do not own one and I use mine so much it literally sits on my counter (in all my videos I think!) because I do use it every week.
