Excellent video, Eric! I use a variation of the half stroke that I've borrowed from the Coticule world. This is a rocking heliptical or an OVAL stroke. As you have done, the heel comes down first, then the "bow" is followed to the toe and then without actually lifting the blade off the stone, we're riding the bow back to the heel in sort of a rhythm. This works extremely well on the Charn.

George that's a great technique! ;) I may try that on the next straight razor I'm honing as it has some geometry issues and the owner wants to keep it a original as possible. How did the tap and wobble test influence the honing at all? T
@AdventuresInWetShaving
@AdventuresInWetShaving 5 жыл бұрын
Great question T! ;) With the tap and wobble test I knew that I would need to use a rolling stroke because of the age of the razor (mid 1800's). I didn't want to do anymore damage then necessary. Thanks for your great question and thanks for watching! :) Take care and have a good weekend my friend! :) #Heart

Hi, great vid thanks. I notice when you are attending to one side you only do push strokes rather than just going backwards and forwards with blade in contact with stone all the time. What is your reason for this, thanks.
@AdventuresInWetShaving
@AdventuresInWetShaving 3 жыл бұрын
Great question James! ;) Honing this smiling blade the razor isn't straight or flat so we need to use a Rolling Stroke and it's harder to do that with a spine leading stroke for me. What I've found that works the best is using these Rolling Axe Stroke. In this way, I can roll the edge from heel to toe on every stroke. I believe I have more control over the process and it will produce a nice edge. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for your great comment and encouragement, and thanks for watching! :) Have a good day, take care and stay safe my friend! :) #Heart

Hello Eric, enjoyed the informative video! Thanks for your help and information. I do have a few questions. 1. Your razor had a bit of a wobble did this type of honing help the wobble? 2. Do you find that you get a better edge going from the 12k Shapton to the ILR vs going from the 8k Shapton to the ILR? Thanks again!
@AdventuresInWetShaving
@AdventuresInWetShaving 5 жыл бұрын
Great questions Martin! ;) 1. A razor with this type of wobble and of this age (mid 1800's) needs special care and the best way to hone a straight razor like this is with a rolling stroke. if it were a Gold Dollar I would correct the geometry on the spine and then hone the blade to shave ready. 2. Going from the 12k Shapton give a keener edge then going from the 8k Shapton to the ILR (IMO). Thanks for your great questions and encouragement, and thanks for watching! :) Have a good weekend and take care my friend! :) #Heart

Great questions Will! ;) I'm using a RoyalShave 3" Red Latigo Leather Straight Razor Strop made by 30 Degree in this video. I'm sure that most people would say their expensive strop works much better then the less expensive ones. However, in the beginning you really don't need an expensive strop because it will get cut and damaged, but if you want one later the sky is the limit... Yeah Buddy! Not really sure the performance is that different though. Thanks for your great questions and encouragement, and thanks for watching! :) Have a great weekend and take care mate! :) #Heart

Hey Eric just found your channel and commented on your previous video. New to de and straight shaving. Had some great youtubbers give me tips on de shaving but I'm getting tired of razor burn and the cuts with shavette Hating shavette because of my experience Do love shaving and just ordered a gold dollar 209 from Frank MisA AT strike gold. Kinda scared won't lie about beginning straight shaving do have brush and soap btw. Would like to hear your thoughts on razor burn with straights and not cutting your self Love the channel

Clint your new Gold Dollar from Frank will be shave ready (which is a great place to start)! ;) Please see my last reply to your first comment with a lot of answers. Straight razors are more forgiving then shavette's all day long my friend making them safer! The only thing you will need is a strop, but you shouldn't get an expensive only yet. Thanks for your great comment and encouragement, and thanks for watching! :) Take care! :) #Heart

A DE is easier than a straight by miles. Shavettes can be brutal. A DE can help you learn how to make a good lather, stretch your skin, and learn how your beard grows and these things are essential to successfully using a straight. Whether you use a shavette or a regular straight - get some alum block and a styptic pencil: you will nick yourself. My advice for a new straight user - start off slowly and do only a 'with the grain' pass (so mainly your cheeks) and then stop. Use what you usually use to finish the shave. It takes time to get the feel of a SR (straight razor). You will not get razor burn from a SR until you are able to do multiple passes. You are going to have to learn how to stretch your skin as you shave unless you are a newborn, so watch a lot of videos as to how. Finally i recommend you use both hands from the beginning - so you shave your right cheek with the blade in your right hand, and the left cheek...you get the idea. Yes, i know it feels odd, but trust me - it'll afford you a level of control that really helps as your technique develops. My suggestion for avoiding cuts is to keep the blade as flat to your skin as you can and only slightly angle it up when you can feel and hear no stubble being removed. Finally, don't be discouraged if you have to endure a couple of crappy shaves as you progress - it takes maybe 50 shaves before you are proficient at this, but there is a sense of pride when you go to work with a decent shave and stop blaming the cat for facial injuries! Good Luck! T

Ment to ask you o this video if you could explain shaving perpendicular to blade? Thank you so much for your kindness
@trunkerdixon
@trunkerdixon 5 жыл бұрын
It means that you always, always, shave by moving the blade in the direction you want it to cut hair. For example, if you are doing a first pass (typically downward only) then the blade only moves from top to bottom. Any time you move the blade sideways to that direction you will slice yourself and bleed! Ask me how i know! So the blade is always moving at ninety degrees (perpendicular) to the direction of the cutting. If you have the means it helps to have a razor with a blunt blade or even a butter knife to practise with. T

I saw one guy do the wobble test and then he taped the blade itself and reset the spine of the knife flat. Then from memory he might have reset the bevel with no tape on the knife at all and then honed the spine and knife though the grades so the spine was repolished. I understand you got this knife sharp but is there are reason you don't correct the geometry?
