An episode on the changes you have made to your boat on the rig and why, would be cool. I know it would be a little "sail geeky", but one of my favorite things is to walk around the marina and see the changes people have made from the factory set up.

I am watching all your films from the start. If you still have the old metal ammo box… add an earth cable to it and you have a Faraday Cage for all your electronics during an electrical storm. I have a similar ammo case from my dad (RIP) and aim to do that when i get my boat… a lot of which he will have paid for (like you said). I look forward to catching up and sharing a few sherberts (as my grandad used to say).

Next time you're near civilization seek out a set of Metrinch spanners. They cover both metric and imperial nuts because they work more on the wall rather than the corners. I had a set and they work well on both and can free up rounded off nuts too. Very handy.

The 15/16 just happens to be the size that holds the belly pans and other panels locked in place on timber jacks and Franklin and many other log skidders. It also just happens to NOT be included in wrench and socket sets... which means you have to buy it extra when you are buying tools for your job if you work or clean the heavy logging equipment. Lucky for me, dad started me out working on that stuff before I could walk so by the time I got a job, I had just about everyone known to man including some specialty tools for working on F 16 fighter jets. Lol

Stay hydrated! I got into trouble a summer ago and wound up in the emergency room for 2 days. They let me go after 8 bags of saline later. Confined to quarter for 6 weeks per my GP. It damaged my kidneys, so a word to the wise, drink more than you think that you need to satisfy your thirst.

Between the heat, the rain, the obvious humidity AND being on a steel boat, I've gotta ask...are you well done or just a bit past medium rare and no, I don't wanna know where you've got the thermometer shoved... Seriously though, good on ya. I hope to one day follow in your footsteps as a solo sailor making my way from sweltering anchorages to overpriced marinas while cursing maintenance chores, cursing laundry, cursing my being my very own provisioning sherpa....and loving every minute as I sample the food, nature and beverages around the world. Thanks for sharing! SRW Toronto, Canada

Hi Barry, thank you for posting your videos, which gives some insight into how others are living/ enjoying life, as the view outside my window in the UK, is of heavy snow falling. That was the nice part! You really need your bumps felt, if your intended means of storing water is a serious proposal. You have two perfectly serviceable tanks built into your vessel, which just need a little TLC, for them to outlive you by a fair few years. Your videos show many thousands of gallons of water, ready available for you to collect, for free. So, what happened? You went to the local stores, paying hard earned cash for the self same liquid. In my opinion, the most practical way of storing/transporting/topping up water, for you, would be to utilise tough plastic potable water containers of no more than 10 litre capacity. 20+ litre containers are far too heavy to lift from a dinghy, onto the boat, in anything other than ideal conditions. If there was ever a demonstration of how not to carry and store water on a sailing yacht, then you have just completed the first proof, if any was needed, that you are not yet safe to leave the harbour. Take care. Regards Tim

There are also different tread sizes; Whitworth, British standard and on and on. The easiest way to judge is to lay one bolt against the other and compare. Look to the light and look for gaps. It's a pain matching up... Tread count, pitch, coarse,fine and on and on... Good luck!

Can you get rid of the bolts sticking out of the water tank lockers and just lay ply in there Be easier to access. With cranking up on rigging , is your mast straight Its important , don’t worry if your inners go slack on the wind slightly , cranking up on stays only compressors the mast down through the boat We make sure it’s straight unloaded Always good to soak rigging screws in crc an hour befor adjustment to So the thread does not twist , , ,the threads causing a crack only found at sea you don’t need to just a hint , steel boats still move ,and more so the bigger they are. Can’t wait for the Panama trip and maby seeing you in n z some time all’s good

Quote my Perkins manual, “All threads are Unified Series”. Quote Wikipedia, Unified Thread Standard - used in U.S.A. and Canada - in Inch fractions rather than millimetres. What we British would call “Imperial”. I carry both Metric and Imperial tools since never know which one will fit a specific nut, and the imperial ones I have additionally labelled in millimetres so I know where they fit relative to Metric. Thanks for showing the engine anode which I guess is non-standard since many engines don’t have them and little or no information on them in various Perkins manuals.

Hey Barry, I hope you have bought yourself a set of spanners for your Perkins. Using the wrong size spanners or a stilsen spanner (should be thrown in the sea...plumbers don't use them any more) on bolts and especially stainless steel fittings is just you decreasing the value of your boat. Perkins engines have AF bolts, (Across Flat) AF is the measurement from one side of the head of the bolt to the other side of the bolt. Some metric and AF spanners and sockets have sizes that are the same. 14mm =9/16" 16mm= 5/8" 17mm=11/16" 19mm=3/4" 22mm=7/8 24mm=15/16" 27mm=1 1/16" or go here www.rapidtables.com/convert/length/mm-to-inch.html Cheers, Wayne (another old plonker)

Seems like a dumb place to put a alternator right under a fittiing that is sure to leak at some point. As multitudes have already said, its Standard vs Metric, or also SAE. Don't know why the US refused to go to the metric system. Seems pretty dumb. Back in the 60's when I was in grade school we were all told it was coming. And they put kilometers on the speedometers in the autos here... and added it to some signs but then nothing. I guess we were just to cheap in the long run to change it. The cost would have been significant. So here in the US, we buy both Standard and Metric wrench and socket sets. I guess that gives the old toolmakers a bit of a bump too.
@Iz0pen Жыл бұрын
We don’t call it American in fact Iv never heard it called that, funny that. We call it standard. Cheers! Edit: Also “On the job” is American police slang for telling other branches of law enforcement you’re a cop of one sort or another.
