Adventures of an old Seadog

Adventures of an old Seadog

Күн бұрын

On passage to Colombia I nearly get zapped in an electric storm at sea. Checking out the streets of Santa Marta and looking for air con, repair to be done and meet up with my bud in a dry dock.

The adventure continues.
Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

I had a quick Google and it's typically around $1 per foot at Caribbean marinas. Less at a fixed mooring, and free at anchor. I think people over-estimate the expense of sailing simply by assuming it's a part-time of the rich so must be expensive.

Hello Barry and enjoyed the video a lot. This is coming from an old river dog. Retired off river boats as senior chief. That sludge in your water tank looks gross but it is harmless. If you had ate it all it would not make you sick. The procedure is to dry, sand, and coat water tanks and they would be good for years. The biggest tank I have done was 6 thousand gallons and it looked just like that and you should have seen the brown snot before it was cleaned and dried. whole crew used the water for months at a time and never any sickness.

I get the so hot i need to go find AC . Was at a regatta tied at the bottom of a hill and just dying from the heat and it led to me to stand up and declare "Either I'm jumping in condom creek (the nick name for the Niagara river after a condom floated by) or we are going to a bar with air conditioning" So I dragged the whole crew up to the bar and 6-7 pitchers of margarita's later all was good .

Makes sense . I use reliant 20l water totes in my boat , capacity is limited only to how many you want to cary , they attach to the hand pump, contamination or rupture of one does not ruin your whole supply and they fold flat when empty . The drawback might be they are not as durable as a steel tank .

OK, so I’m going to be a bit brutal here. But be patient....it gets better for you. First the undiplomatic stuff. I have never seen such boat mess in my life. I’m not talking about mess during boat jobs, that’s normal. I’m talking about your boat in sailing conditions - lines everywhere, buckets, rubbish, stuff to trip over, more lines rolling around the deck, things flapping - not least the skipper, and down below, if only the “boat food” were to be the worst thing. Personally i just couldn’t live like that, let alone sail anywhere. But its not me, its you. And somehow your videos are compelling. You couldn’t sail when you started and you are not much good at it now. You make ends meet in a way that is absurd. Most of what you repair needs to be junked - you will anyway before long. The canvass in this video for example. It’s not good. It’s rubbish. Throw it away and start again for goodness sake! And yet, the whole thing is so wonderful. Why? Because you do what 99% of the population dare not do - you just do it! There is a fine line between stupidity and genius. I’m not entirely sure which side both you and me fall although I fear i can hazard a good guess. But let there me no mistake. When all is said and done you will have seen more of the world, had more adventures, more living than the vast majority can shake a stick at. Bloody well done I say! In the “good old days” i would have said its British pluck but in the meantime i have seen the same madness in many nationalities. And it is wonderful and to be commended. I congratulate you...you inspire people who dare not try....you show that you don’t need to be a Russian Oligarch to have a boat let alone see the world.....and you put the TV coach potato’s to shame; as well as the “lets stay in the harbour forever” brigade too. Fantastic. Keep it up 👍 And safe sailing ⛵️
