So good to get these weekly updates - but how long out of actual date/time. Where in real time are you now???? Or if you are still in NZ when are you due to move - I do realise that as a solo traveller a long voyage at sea , alone takes a real “girding up of the loins”. All my own cycle camping travels were done solo and I found that stressful at times - but I also found that in troubled/difficult times a very ordinary saviour would appear out of nowhere and produce real help. I have many happy memories of when I was nearly beyond coping - and out of nowhere so help would happen. And many years ago I learned to return the favour whenever I could. Sadly at 84 I find myself on the receiving end all too often these days, but I do try to ensure I make some recompense in returned favours

Recently had problems with my own Blakes Lavac heads while cruising with two friends. What a nightmare only option the good old bucket!!. The pipe had scaled up over the years which I discovered after failing to make any difference rodding the system. I had to cut it out in sections as it was routed through furniture. Had to access it through various lockers and cut with junoior hacksaw. In the end changed the pump and all the pipework. It was not easy as big guy in confined space in the Summer heat and had a fight trying to the get the pipe on which was metric to imperial seacock. Well worth the effort the heads smells great all the time now, it works and that old odour that tends to linger in heads no matter how much you clean them is gone. Great to see the boat coming back together.

My friend you definitely over tightened that oil filter which can lead to a crushed gasket, rubber ring seal, and leaking. When they say hand tightened they mean just snugged, never go full gorilla on them. Should be okay unless you see leaking but it will be a bear to get off next time after heat cycling. Oh and before putting the new filter on rub a bit of oil on the rubber ring seal, helps it to seat properly without getting snagged up/pinching. Not trying to be an ass, just helpful as I grew up turning wrenches for my grandfather and was able to learn a few things. I like you and your channel and am only trying to be helpful. Maybe something to think about next time or not, it is after all your boat. LOL Thank you for another interesting video and I'm looking forward to you getting to go for a sail...
@gdfggggg3 жыл бұрын
Hand tight on an oil filter is never going to damage the rubber, no way. After changing thousands of oil filters on Diesel engines, they require an extra nip with a proper filter strap. I’ve seen, ‘hand tight’ oil filters disappear. Never do a filter hand tight just so it’s easier to get off. Fit with a filter strap, remove with a filter strap.
@PreacherwithoutaPulpit3 жыл бұрын
@@gdfggggg Here's the thing about what you've said my definition of hand tight and your's may be dramatically different. What I'm saying is don't torque it down so much you can see it obviously the gasket being compressed so hard it is being moved out of where it should be resting. Also hand tight to me does not mean I can easily come spin it right off to where even the engines own vibrations could cause it to loosen. Being a mechanic for years only adds so much weight to anyone's statement including my own. If I've been doing something incorrectly for years does not magically change it to doing something correctly just because I've been doing it that way for X amount of years. When I go to change a filter I've hand tightened it still requires a filter wrench or strap to remove it but I don't have to use extreme amounts of force with said wrench. So on this I guess we can agree, hand tight does not mean you leave it loose... PS It also depends on what size engine we're talking about and what the shop manuals say is the correct amount of force...
