Hi Barry, thank you for the videos. I realy enjoy them all. Just a word on changing pump impellers. Whenever you remove an old one you must inspect for missing pieces as you did. Next, you must find and account for every piece. They should be trapped in the first chamber of the heat exchanger. If you don't do this you will develop over heating problems and no one needs that!

The timber that the British navy built their ship hulls out of in the 19th century was Huon Pine from Tasmania. Huon does not reach maturity and produce seeds until it is 1600 years old. Most Huon Pine is 2000 years plus. The decks were made from Celery Top Pine. Neither of these trees are pines, they are ancient and once grew in Antartica along side Dinosaurs.

Did you get the bits of broken impeller blade out Barry? Check the outlet line from the impeller pump - it probably goes directly to the end cap of the heat exchanger, which'll also likely house the thermostat too check that pipe, the thermostat itself and the void between thermostat and the heat exchanger's core (a load of small diameter pipes) for any bits of impeller blade which may be floating around and could cause a blockage at an inconvenient moment and remove them. Lovely looking boat they were relaunching : ).

When those impeller parts break off like in your video they can get pushed through into your heat exchanger depending where the strainer sits. They could partially block the water flow running through you heat exchanger core tubes.. this could reduce cooling !!! Normally if a few are missing it is best to try find then and remove them 😊😊

Remember my great aunt Mary had a 50 something Plymouth that large fins and she called it a hay wagon. She also dyed her hair with water soaked with black walnut shells and they had an out house with 2 holes. In summer had to check for snakes before setting down. Barry I am several older than you. 2 weeks past I did my 101st skydiving jump. All my good times are soon coming to and as now I have cancer. Prostate, should have found a short term gf. All here ones that are old and I wanted have my age.

Check where the broken vain parts are, Barry. They're probably stuck inline somewhere and could impede the cooling water flow

Great vids! Do not know a lot about marine engines, but the part of the old impeller missing... you should check you have the lot out, could still be inside the pipes and on its way to block the cooling / heat exchanger thingy...or something. ( did almost this on our Perkins 4.108)
@manning6433 жыл бұрын
Barry, You a hundred times the sailor than I will ever be. And I know from experience that if your sea water impeller is missing bits of the fins those rubber bits, they are drifting about in your engine and can cause serious problems with your cooling system. A professional marine mechanic working on my engine once when testing my engine after a repair failed to open the engine sea valve. left my engine running and went up to his truck to return his tools and write up the bill. When He returned to my boat the engine had overheated. Knowing what he had done the "professional" inspected the impeller (which had destroyed itself) and replaced with a new impeller. Later after I had paid my $1K+ mechanics repair bill my engine would overheat at high RPM. I would check the impeller and the sea valve open and water flow at the exhaust and the alarm would clear at low RPM. Frustrated a friend at the marina suggested I clean the heat exchanger. Well what do you know?? It was almost totally blocked with the rubber fin bits from the impeller. It took the mechanic shop manager to get the "Professional Marine Mechanic" to tell the truth about his overheating of my engine. He took $500.00 off my bill. He was lucky he didn't buy me a new engine. To this day I wonder if there are anymore Fin bits floating about in my engine. Fingers crossed!

Really enjoyed this video with classic car bonus. Regarding the hose extension, The clear reinforced hose you used is made of PVC and it will get hard and eventually brittle. Better find a rubber hose and swap it when in the mood. 👍

Great episode as usual. One thing, when you prized out your impeller with your screwdriver, you damaged the house face edges which may cause an issue with it damaging the new one or the plate not sitting tightly etc. For me, I use pointy nosed pliers to avoid damaging the face. Others may advise on the impact of that damage. Just a thought before you set sail...

Good video Barry, re the impaler I use long nose pliers, the trick being not pulling off the fins. 🏴☠️
