Thanks for another adventure! I went to high school with a good friend who's family was from Estonia. I loved going to her home, where her Grandmom also lived, and they would speak Estonian together. Her family was very active in the states with keeping Estonian traditions and the culture alive. Also, those cinnamon buns reminded me of a similar bakery I visited in Iceland (Brauð & co. - put it on your list, if not already!), but the ones in Iceland were much bigger. Either way - YUM!!! Thanks again for your lovely glimpse into a little bit of this beautiful country!

I love Tallinn! I've been there twice. It's a hidden gem and one of Europe's best small cities. If you ever go back you should also check out Telliskivi. It's the neighborhood just west of the old town just down the hill 10 minutes walk from the Patkuli viewing platform. It's the old Soviet industrial area that's now transformed into restaurants, art studios, distilleries, tech startups etc. There is this great juxtaposition between the historic medieval Vana Tallinn at the top of the Hill and trendy post-Soviet Telliskivi below. Great video!

Those buildings have been burnt down to the ground many times during centuries. The last time being in the bombing of Tallinn in 1943. And everything has always been built back again, the way it was. We have very detailed laws about maintaining old buildings, they cannot be built back in any other way than they originally were. And no modern building allowed in Old Town. My grandmother was in Tallinn during the 1943 bombing, she was 10 years old. Today they are showing a film shot at the time of the bombing in an old underground shelter. I watched it last summer and it made me so angry:Who the fuck are you to dare to destroy my city? Never thought of it before what it must have looked like after the event. I have seen pictures but I never put it together in my head before. That is was actually the same building on the same streets where I go every day. And it was all destroyed and all built back up again. And all that was done in a really dark depressing time, the first years of the Soviet occupation with massacres and deportations of tens of thousands of people, and bringing in loads of Russian working class from all over Russia to Estonia. And Estonians taken out of their homes and those homes given to those loads of people brought in against our will and probably against their own as well. So the Estonian people lost almost everything back then and in the next decades to come. The city was in ruins. But it was built back up really quickly. I cannot imagine where the resources came from. So maintaining the city like that has not been easy. And now it all ours again and everyone who thinks otherwise can go f..k themselves. Back in Covid times it felt especially ours because there was nobody here but us for a change. everything was quiet and empty. Just the city alone. It was really nice.

I don't think for Europeans Tallinn is regarded hidden or underrated, well it might feel in winter like that. But in summer it is surely a different story. Actually, it is also quite common at Christmas markets in Germany and in Central Europe to have small nostalgic carrousel as well - mostly for children.

We spent a week in Helsinki and another way up north in Ivalo, hoping to see the northern lights. The 9:25 is where I work. we get very few tourists here because it is not "on the way". I don"t know from where to where but there is hardly anyone ever here even though it is Old town and way more authentic than the streets that tourists lose themselves on usually. And the view is really good from Nunna tower. Keep that in mind when you come here. It is easy to miss because the entrance to the tower is a little hidden. I always explain that to all the visitors who come but when I look on the security camera, hardly anyone ever bothers to go there. But the view is really great, straight to Toompea. You do not look down on it like you usually do but Toompea is right next to the tower, on the same height.

Riga is a sad shadow of Tallinn. Bigger of course and fancier. But they have not managed to keep it medieval, they have built all sorts of pointless ugly building all over it. And also still quite a Soviet style vibe present. I"d rather spend the extra time in Tallinn(or the rest of Estonia) Or go to Vilnius. Vilnius Old Town is something quite different and really amazing. But Riga_ not worth it. And cold (metaphorically, physically it is warmer than Tallinn). People are quite rude, particularly taxi drivers and Russians.

Take it from a lifelong skier who has skied all over the US and several places in Europe. Mittens are much warmer than gloves. They are a nuisance while trying to do things but way warmer. I have skied in temps from minus 30 degrees to 58 degrees with puddles of standing water on the snow. I have always suffered from cold hands. I need mittens when most do well in gloves. Carry quality mittens and gloves with you and when gloves don't get it done, put on the mittens. No need for warmers. When you are balling up your hands inside gloves, you are essentially creating the same environment as mittens. You finger warm each other up. Just FYI.
@AdventuresofAplusK
@AdventuresofAplusK 9 ай бұрын
Yes we had mittens as well. We used them when we weren't filming. It's very difficult to film a video (or do anything) using mittens 😂
@HelenGolovina-y9h
@HelenGolovina-y9h 9 ай бұрын
I would recommend double layer gloves. And keep them on all the time while outside. And the rest of your clothing has to be warm as well, it works as a whole. Often in Tallinn videos I see people with no hats, with their coats open in front, their scarf very sexily flowing around instead of being tightly around your neck. When it is cold, it is important to keep yourself warm all the time because once you freeze, you can wear whatever you like, you will not get warm no matter what. In winter in Estonia you can either look good or be warm. Not both.

Most of the ferries between Finland and Estonia and also Finland-Sweden are like that. Some ferries have more in common with cruiseships and are called cruiseferries. Two ferries that goes between Helsinki and Stockholm have a promenade onboard with restaurants, bars and shops with cabins looking down from above. Similar to promenades found on modern Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines ships like Voyager, Freedom, Oasis and Icon of The Seas.

Thanks for recommending olde Hansa restaurant. During my recent trip to Tallinn 10 days ago, I had made a reservation well in advance and it was amazing to be in that medieval setting.

Actually, the Town Hall Square is the most beautiful AFTER the Christmas market is gone. So what we do is get rid of the obvious Christmas stuff, but we leave the trees and bring all the small trees from the rest of the Old Town to the square and light them up (with minimalistic white lights , not the cheesy horrible blinking lights) and also we bring the electric sculptures of Estonian wild animals (wolves, foxes, deer, squirrels, lynxes...) So we have a Nordic fantasy forest in the middle of the Old Town and that is really nice. The tradition started during Covid, It was during the second wave that public events were cancelled around Christmas. And the emphasis was on making the Old Town and the rest of the city as beautiful as possible so people could get the Christmas and winter spirit by just walking around (fortunately we never had a total lockdown during Covid, walking around anywhere for as long as you wish was always possible). So quite a lot of money was spent on these electric animal sculptures and now we still have them all over the city. So why not check the Town Hall Square AFTER Christmas. It is a unique sight. Christmas markets as such are all over the world, nothing special about them.

Yes, kind of. What i like to do when I go to places where I have been before, so that I know it already a little, but still is new enough, i like to go to a bookstore first, buy a book, and then find a cafe, get coffee and read the book. But I never pay much attention to food. I am indifferent to food in general@@AdventuresofAplusK

That sounds like a great plan! When I have time I like to read a book about a place before I visit. Doesn't always happen, but it helps me recognize things I see that I wouldn't know of if I didn't read about it before. We love food. It's one of our favorite things. You learn so much about a place through its food. Just like your comment about the sausage

Howdy Adam, Kathryn, and Kona - Looks like an awesome trip! I would like to know what mode of transportation did y'all take from the airport to the ferry terminal? Did you purchase your ferry ticket in advanced? I am preparing for my trip flying from Texas to Helsinki, then taking the ferry to Tallin, then long bus ride to Warsaw. I will then fly to Rome to board 18-night cruise back to USA. Btw, I was stationed in Germany before I retired from US Army so it's nice to see your adventures. Look forward to your reply and thanks for sharing - safe travels!

Hey! We got to the ferry terminal from our hotel in Helsinki by street car. Helsinki has awesome public transportation. When we arrived in Finland we took the train from the airport to our hotel. Yes we purchased the ferry ticket in advance and would recommend it. Here is more information about the ferry to Tallinn: adventuresofaplusk.com/day-trip-tallinn-helsinki/ We also have more Finland resources: adventuresofaplusk.com/finland/ That sounds like an awesome trip! By the way, the Baltic Sea is supposedly the most covered by ferries and ships in the world. Both in terms of number of ships and number of crossings per day. I do not know if it is true but I have heard it. If you have not taken a ferry to Stockholm, I suggest you do that. Because many hours before the ferry gets there, it navigates between all the little island and that is amazing. The only thing that justifies sea travel for me. Otherwise I prefer air transport. Also you get to have a whole night on a ship instead of just an hour on average between Estonia and Finland.

Olde Hansa is not cheesy and touristy. It is a really authentic place that has made a lot of effort to maintain the mediaevalness of Old Tallinn and our historic atmosphere. It is one of those rare places that is loved by tourists and locals alike. Which is rare. Usually tourist traps are hated by locals. But this is a wonderful place with the best Estonian kind-hospitality. The staff is helpful but they respect your privacy and do not try harder than they should. I am not promoting them. i do not work there or have any other ties with it. I just love the place and I know Estonians generally love it and I would really recommend it. Otherwise, I would suggest you avoid the tourist traps, tourist streets like Viru street because they in no way represent real Tallinn. Get a little further from the tourist trajectory and you will get the real feeling of the place. The tourist streets are not even the main streets historically, tehy are just the closest ones to bigger hotels. Viru street was never the main street and Viru gate was never the main gate. The main gate is Suur Rannavärav, next to the port because this was where 99% of people approached the city from. It is really sad how most tourists never go beyond those tourist trajectories and never get an idea of the place really. I would suggest you approach the Old Town from the port and take it from there. And avoid places with too many people because what you would find there are Finnish karaoke bars, Russian souvenir shops (although they will claim to sell Estonian souvenirs but since when are matrjoshkas or amber Estonian souvenirs. Or teh monster of a 1900 Russian church in the middle of Toompea, the most iconic place in Estonia. I work on a part of Tallinn Town wall which is a uniquely well preserved Town wall on the world scale. And we get only a few visitors a day because the tourists get stuck on the karaoke bars and never find us because one would have to walk 10 minutes, god forbid, to get to us. But the same kind of place, a part of the Town wall, right next to the karaoke bars and MacDonalds gets loads of visitors. Even though there is basically no view from the towers there. But yes, Olde Hansa is one of the places I definitely recommend to anyone. the only thing it is bad for is when you want to just sit, have coffee and read a book (which is something i love to do, also when I travel) because it is dark there, just candles.
