Well done for knowing when to bow out and seek treatment. As a fellow FOMO gal, I have pushed myself far too often and ended up with longer term issues. It's so hard to stop when you're in the middle of an experience you might never repeat, but you saved the rest of your trip. Another great vid, and super helpful to me as I'm going to Peru in the spring - you guys always seem to be a few months ahead of me on my planned trips, which makes my planning so much better! Also, welcome to the club of people who cry about overwhelmingly awesome nature experiences 😊

It was a very tough call to make in the moment, but I think we made the right decision. Who knows what that infection could have developed into! That's awesome to hear about your upcoming trip to Peru. We are currently pumping out our Peru content on our website. We're a little over half way through it and we'll have over 20 posts when they're all done. Hoping to be done by the end of the year! adventuresofaplusk.com/peru/

As a peruvian living in Lima feel a bit ashamed that you have seen all of that and i havent. Been to Macchu Picchu a couple of times and always is a blast but took the train both times (is cheaper for us locals). Also good call on going to the dr. Cellulitis is no joke. Antibiotics is a must in that case and in a hasty time too. I must say that a few minutes before the news of the infection i noticed your exposed calves (very nice btw) and thought it peculiar and somehow risky but i thought i was exageraring. Eager wo watch your glorious ascension to the incan sanctuary! Take care and enjoy!

I did this trek in 2021 but with a guided small group. It's the hardest thing I've physically done. Got altitude sickness at camp the 1st day and had to miss the beautiful lake trek from camp. My guides talked me into using a horse to get to the pass the next day because I still wasn't feeling great that morning and as they said- no shame with the horse. So glad I listened because as soon as we starting losing altitude I was fine. I say this to you guys- no shame with needing to take care of your physical health! The day you missed was a very grueling uphill hike to an Inka ruin that overlooks Machu Pichu and then straight down. I felt alot of pride that day because I had missed the hardest parts of the 1st and second day with the lake hike and hike to the pass. I ended up taking the train in the end as a shortcut bc my feet were blistering and my toes hurt more than anything. I switched between chacos and hiking boots the whole time to rest my feet but with all the downhill on this trek, I still ended up losing a toenail. It was tough for me even with skirting part of it with the horse to the pass and train at the end. I think I ended up hiking 37 of the 45 miles in 4 days (roughly). I'd love to go back someday with my husband- we met a few months after my trip. Peru is magical and I love seeing my experience through your yours.

@AdventuresofAplusK Ай бұрын
It's a very challenging hike! Altitude sickness is NOT fun! The night before the day we skipped it rained very hard so climbing up that steep trail would have been very tough and potentially dangerous. So it's not bad that we missed that section in those conditions. We're glad we were able to get medical help quickly and it healed fast! Great job on hiking most of the trek! It is quite an accomplishment! Thanks and thanks for watching!

Bless you Kathryn for this. I was in Colombia over the summer and had exactly the same thing happen. Bug bite in Salento, and by the time we got to Jardin - our next stop, it was infected and like you, painful to walk on. Your medical centre looked a lot less scary than the place I ended up, and despite also having cellulitis, was given a couple of injections and a prescription for lots of medication from the pharmacy, but wasn't asked to return the following day. Later in our trip we did a 3 day self guided hike through Tayrona National Park and then a 4 day guided hike to the Lost City and was so thankful it had happened before either of these multi day hikes... so knowing this happened to you on what I deem to be Peru's equivalent - I REALLY feel for you!! I was worried you may have lost your slot to visit Machu Picchu, but pleased to hear at the end of the video this wasn't the case. The doctor who diagnosed me thought it was likely a combination of sun screen and dust I'd kicked up from the hiking trails that caused the infection... so after that, I had my hiking socks pulled up to the fullest, despite looking silly. I couldn't bear trousers in the tropical heat once we made it up to the Caribbean coast. All of that aside, once I saw you guys were in Peru, I knew you'd end up doing one of the hikes to Machu Picchu and wondered which it was going to be. My money had been on the Salkantay as it's arguably the prettiest and cheaper than the Inca, but the downside is its a day longer. Knowing you weren't short on time for annual leave, I thought Salkantay, but you caught me off guard doing it self guided!!! This has been really helpful as Peru is certainly on our bucket list - had ummed and aahed over going to Peru or Ecuador next... Ecuador has pipped it to the post, but I'll be using this for reference, plus you blogs when we do make it!
@AdventuresofAplusK
@AdventuresofAplusK Ай бұрын
Sorry to hear you got cellulitis as well! We hadn't heard of it before this trip. Funny enough, a girl that we met along the trek got cellulitis earlier this year in Colombia as well. She waited much longer to tend to it and had to spend several days recovering in hospital. We definitely learned a lesson on this trek. Sounds like you did some epic treks! Tayrona looks amazing! Going to bookmark that one. The Salkantay was totally doable without a guide if you have some backpacking experience. Ecuador sounds awesome as well. Definitely let us know what you get up to there as it's on our list as well!

A huge thank you for sharing this video of your epic adventure. I'll never be able to do it myself but, nonetheless, I feel that I have shared the experience and been able to see those spectacular mountain views, even if only through a computer screen. I am in awe of the effort that you put in and your level of fitness. I feel tired watching those sequences where you are hiking away from the camera on a steep hill, knowing that you will have had to backtrack, take down the camera and then walk up the steep hill again. I appreciated your LMNT review. I wish that I had seen it before I set off up Gros Morne (Newfoundland) a few years ago and got into seriousl trouble with muscle cramps from electrolyte imbalance. I am looking forward to viewing your Macchu Pichu adventure.

Yes thankfully it cleared up quickly and Kathryn is all recovered now! The Salkantay is definitely doable without a guide. We met lots of solo travelers along the way. It was funny because some of them that we met stayed at the same accommodations as us every night and we'd see them along the trail every day so it was almost like our own unofficial group. We wrote a guide to doing the trail without a guide that might be helpful: adventuresofaplusk.com/machu-picchu-salkantay-trek-without-guide/

I'd never heard of cellulitis until I got it almost 3 years ago at the age of 69. It's pretty aggressive. It took two different antibiotics to knock it out. It's not a surprise you needed IV Antibiotics.

It was pretty scary and thankfully it cleared up fast

@@AdventuresofAplusK Yes, it is a scary infection. If left untreated it can cause several deadly conditions. Same here ---the second anti-biotic did the job. Stay safe.

Good decision regarding not trekking the whole way to Agua Calientes. I'm sure your body appreciated the break. I'm glad that they had medical care available for you. It's always scary to have medical need in a foreign country.

A & K, ...those 3D carvings you mentioned. ...Those are called a "Bas relief" ...pronounced "Bah" relief. (I only know thanks to HP Lovecraft's spooky stories where characters find ancient bas reliefs, aluding to dark ancient mysteries.) Cheers.

Yes you can hike up to Machu Picchu at the end. There is an AllTrails link in the description if you want to see the entire route

Using ski poles for trekking takes about 40% of the load and effort off your feet/legs/calves and thighs.

We have trekking poles, but just don't really like them or have felt the need for them. Also, they kind of get in the way when filming. Just another thing to have to hold on to

Hey guys love watching your channel. I'm 57 years old so not eligible for medicare yet. I'm curious, what do you do for health insurance. I want to travel like you but would't have health insurance if I quit my job. Any advice?
@AdventuresofAplusK
@AdventuresofAplusK Ай бұрын
Health care is quite a pain in the butt for us. We have one of the healthcare.gov options and it's very expensive and very bad. We're lucky that we're healthy and can do with the cheapest plan which is still about $700 per month. That comes with a very high deductible and doesn't even completely cover "preventative" services. On top of that, it only works in Texas (our legal residence). So it's useless most of the year for us, unless we fly back. I don't know your work situation, but if you can do your job remotely, maybe try to transition it to that. Or if you do quit, you can still have health insurance, but be ready to go back to your home state for appointments. So maybe go on short trips or fly back when needed. I'm not sure if that's very helpful. If you have any other questions feel free to email us and we'll help how we can!
