Beaufort Wow! Memories 🇺🇸. I was stationed on Paris Island for 18 months 79-80. Marine Special Services would rent you a 13ft Boston Whaler with the steering set up. I actually was concerned for out safety and nearly lost it on the Broad River returning in a pre-storm rough water mess..13ft too small. Great experience actually being stationed the on that island. 🇺🇸

That area you churned bottom coming out of Rock creek to the coosaw is notoriously shallow. It changes often, nearly every large tide cycle (typically 4 a month) we try to avoid it within an hour each side of low tide. Glad all worked out!! So glad you got to experience some of our great city.

I lived on the ICW in Ponte Vedra Beach, just north of St. Augustine. Navionics worked great for me from Amelia Island down to Daytona. Plenty of sand bars to run into along that stretch. Especially near St. Augustine. I made a short documentary video (my Finding Saint Johns KZbin channel) before we moved to Georgia. It’s about the Palm Valley Bridge, which you will be passing underneath. There’s a nice restaurant there you can dock at for some fresh seafood. Further down, don’t hesitate to stop for great BBQ at Captains BBQ. Either spot will fill your stomach. Safe travels.

I remember the hard right turn into that little cut well. It was super shallow through that area. Waiting for the Lady's Island swing bridge is where we discovered our engine's catastrophic failure on the sailboat... we ended up heading through that bridge and anchored in the dark just outside the mooring field there... it was fairly deep, lots of current, and full of boats... not fun in the dark with cloud cover and reduced maneuverability. Anyway, just saying hello and mostly letting you know that we do stay (fairly) current with your content. Good stuff, as always!

The difference in the ipad versions is the cellular ipad has a GPS receiver built in, the wifi version does not. The cellular one doesn't connect to the cell tower for a GPS signal, it uses the GPS receiver built into the device. You can use a cellular ipad without service or sim card and tether it via wifi to a phone or hotspot without issue.

I did this trip (Ft Myers, FL. to Warwick, RI.) about a year ago in a 35 foot sail boat (6 foot draft), I know the channel that you are taking at 3:00. It is where the Edisto River and the Dawho River meet. At the time that I did the trip, the markers were where your Garmin chart plotter showed. However, the ICW Cruising Guide, and Aqua Maps (a chart plotter app) suggested that I take the route that you are taking. The skill of being a navigator is to know when to believe the chart, and when to believe your chart plotter, and when to believe your ATON. Also - I disagree with you about needing a SIM enabled tablet. My Samsung Galaxy Tab A (WiFi only) helped me navigate through the entire trip (including New York Harbor at midnight) without a hitch. I had similar issue of “boating on land” according to my charts. Boat GPS may need to have map offset and/or rotation set to get map and location to align. Bridges and boat ramps are good landmarks that will show up in Navionics to reset your location to.

Not sure why, but my iPad without cell service doesn’t work with Navionics when out on the water. However my cell phone and cell capable android works perfectly. Perhaps it’s an old iPad with poor gps receiver. I’ll try my new iPad next time out to see if anything improves.

When i ( or anyone ) is over the side working on the prop / rudder etcetera , i always remove the key ( surreptitiously ) and hide it nowhere near the bridge and unbeknownstto others. This is to prevent ( or at least slow ) someone from starting the engine / engaging the prop. I also place a placard at the ignition switch. There's not one chance in six that someone would start the engine while you're at the prop, but i don't play Russian roulette, either . . .

I don’t think it’s that same for larger boats. Our bow rises but stern seems to dig in. I wouldn’t want to risk hitting bottom on plane. When inching along a bottom bumping can be a simple annoyance. On plane it can be catastrophic.

Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing. I have found my Garmin chartplotter is often way "off" and places me on dry land when I'm right ion the middle of the ICW. Have you tried a chart app called "Aqua Map"? -- it may be the most up to date of all ICW chart software. Good move to anchor early and enjoy the afternoon. Slogging long hours at the helm every day becomes tedious and takes the fun out of the trip. BTW did you have any trouble with green head flies in the marshy parts of South Carolina and Georgia? They are supposed to be really nasty.

I have a great idea, go during high tide
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 2 жыл бұрын
Charts have depths that indicate low tide water levels which were plenty deep for my boat. Traveling 10+ hours a day, you will undoubtedly experience low tide at some point as the tides change every 6 hours.

I think with the iPads that have a SIM card slot it’s merely a case of Apple installed the gps capability only in those models for some reason, it irks me as my 2021 iPad Pro has no sim card slot so Navionics won’t work accurately. Garmin have a reasonably priced Bluetooth external gps unit (Garmin Pro 2) that apparently works in these circumstances

Yes, it does often get that shallow. Normal tide swings are 8-10 ft in this area. But luckily for boaters it is all soft mud.

“What do we pay taxes for?” Did he just say that? Is the right answer “we should pay taxes to make the sure the one percent are comfy and don’t have to wait for a higher tide to drive their boat through a canal?” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 10 ай бұрын
Our taxes go to maintaining the waterways. Boat Fuel taxes, sales taxes and countless hidden fees for registration, permitting,etc. - just like car gas taxes, tolls and care sales taxes help repair roads. The intracoastal waterway is a federal project mandated to be maintained to a minimum depth. Failure of that means failure by government to do their job. Commercial fishermen and transports use these canals also and are unable to ply their trade when they are unable to transit, leading to higher prices for you, the consumer, so yes, we expect our taxes to be used for its intended purpose.
@farronbalance
@farronbalance 10 ай бұрын
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs , if you were having issues getting through, then I’d imagine deep-draft commercial vessels would be foolish to try going close at the highest of tides. My point is, tax dollars are best used where the infrastructure is needed most, and a cutoff route for pleasure craft isn’t high on that list. I’m in the PacNW where we don’t really need as much dredging except for harbors and a few man-made features. But it’s all charted and marked.
@AdventuresofHappyOurs
@AdventuresofHappyOurs 10 ай бұрын
@farronbalance federal law provides the waterway be maintained to 12’. Inadequate funding has prevented that by a long shot. I’m sure the commercial users who have been charged the fuel tax upwards of 10 cents a gallon since 1978 aren’t happy either.

Do you have ICW lisens at all ??? Just wondering. If not you should get app of c-map for updated map's. Thats follow you every inch of water. Dont need cellphone coverage at all. Only needs GPS Smart trix if your dont have ICW. allsow then you learn all rules and behavior and all. That can allsow make you sitting dry and drive even at night when you dont see 3 feet. Cos THAT HOW ACCURATE IT IS !!!!! and no it hasent bean better sens 2021😂😂😂 Still the same and strong going😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Should have bean like lisens. For all to use. Then you can see other boats and all traffic on tablet. Dont need windows So smart way to go. Hope you picking up and stop wronglearning. Better to be shure and safe before telling others what to do and not. That's why lisens is made
