This Brother is one of the principle ‘historians’ of our time. I use them term ‘historian’ because he is capturing us as we create our history and I feel to see him solely as a photographer or film maker would be unjust as he is so much more. I love just about everything he makes and he is much needed in todays world. #destinedforgrateness

This video is 3 years old, Ben, and its pertinence is greater than ever. It’s also my favourite video of yours I’ve seen to date. I love your heart and your mind and that you ask these questions on more than a superficial level. I’ve been involved with helping homeless folks and refugees for a number of years and their stories and their humanity remain uppermost in my mind. I don’t have the answers to your questions, I just give of myself and hope each encounter sticks with the person as much as it does with me, like you say it’s about compassion and connection. I don’t photograph them, it feels far too much like exploitation. I’ve started getting into street portraits though and want to go further, delve deeper. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏🏼

I’m the high school teacher who posted a couple of days ago. What I didn’t say is that I teach HS graphic design, photography and video production. I have no problem teaching the kids HOW to press the correct buttons and turn the right dials; but what is an ever present struggle is teaching the kids WHY they take the photo in the first place. Guess what just made it into tomorrow’s lesson plans. You perfectly described what I have been trying to communicate to my students year after year - some years more successful than others - your passion and eloquence does a far better job of the why than I have ever achieved.

This is an amazing video. Your portraits are stunning. These beautiful faces and the stories they tell! I too had a similar experience when I went to Haiti though I did not go to do photography. I was working, providing restorative yoga practices at a hospital for the very overworked doctors and nurses there. I also worked with children in the cancer ward. To say the least, it was a profound experience. Additionally, my own mother had just died so I felt very raw inside as I stayed on the hospital grounds in a tent camp and when I went to bed at night on my cot, I heard the cries coming from the hospital from just beyond. I had only the crappiest pocket camera possible but the stories in front of me were so moving and unbelievable so I had to try. I took some of my most profound and moving photos to this day. And yes, these people with so little had so much joy - especially the children. I have always been very passionate about photography but this trip spurred a deep desire to do more (real) documentary work and try to tell stories with deeper meaning. I really appreciate your video. I often think here in the US (especially after my Haiti trip), we're so quick to complain/bitch when we can't get those "Prada" shoes etc. And when you travel, you become open to an entirely different way to see life. (On a separate note, oh those Leica colors! I just love the Leica colors. I hope one day to own the Q2 Reporter. I love the idea of true simplicity out in the field). Anyway, sorry this is so long but I felt like sharing, inspired by your great work here and your heartfelt words.

I totally appreciate your philosophy on all this and provided me with food for thought . From my old film days to now, I avoided street portraits for most of the time? Instead I sought the decisive moment. I still do, but my daughters dislike it when we are in a coffee shop or somewhere similar that I am invisible with the grandchildren being present . I have also approached trades people and with just my phone I have decided on the shot snd processed it to there and then to show them . The expression of bewilderment and approval as they see some thing created before their eyes and I ask if they would like me to send them the image . When I have been abroad among tourists I find that creates some wonderful images and nobody really cares because everybody is photographing everybody else . When you slow down and are able to observe interesting people , ideas come together and that is when begin to create a connection between us . The next thing I do is carry a photo book and show them a range of photos and if they warm to it, I ask if I could do their portrait - one lens - one camera and one image . Transfer from camera to phone and process in Snapseed. We all have our own style . When I meet somebody I want to that their portrait , it is different to a photo , which is a landscape - that applies to country rolling hills as it does to street work . I liked your approach to introducing the camera and I am going to apply it . Thanks - enjoyed that video

Ben, this is probably the "best" production so far on the channel. Listening to you and watching the video reminded me about how Morten Krogvold, a highly renowned Norwegian photographer presents his portfolio: "I take pictures I like, and I make them for myself. I am convinced that we all are part of the human realm, I photograph for the part of myself that is part of the other. Photography is to present time. A photography is what's left of us when we are gone. To create a photography is to connect with another humans mortality, vulnerability and perishability. By isolating and freezing the moment, the photography become a witness of the passing time. A photography shall not be a image of the subject, but create a emotional reaction in the viewer. So to the question; what to do with the pictures? My suggestion, aim for a exhibition and make books. They deserve to be made immortal.
@adventureStaley3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Einar. And thank you for coming back to leave the comment again. For some reason comments with links disappear. Very frustrating. I did check out Morten's work. Stellar! Followed on IG and bookmarked. Thank you for sharing.

A point you brought up at 17:47 (about how you want to help, but maybe you don't need to) got me thinking of a conversation I had in the past. We were talking about how sometimes, we look from our perspective and feel a sense of sadness bc those who are less fortunate have never had the opportunity to have/experience certain things...but from their perspective, they're completely happy (and have been) because they've never had..whatever it is...in their lives to begin with. It's like looking at someone who's been blind all their lives and thinking, "oh, how sad...he/she can't see"...but if he/she has never experienced sight to begin with...are they really sad (about sight)? Or is that sadness born from being told they can't see by those who can? But then that raises another question about, well, when do we intervene? Should we intervene? No answer...just food for thought. What I love so much about your channel/videos is that it's not even a "photography" channel like the many others on KZbin that talk photography-specific topics (shooting technique, how I shot this, etc) but you talk about LIFE through the medium of photography. The practice of gratitude seems to diminish with the more and more we have...but it really is such a powerful tool that needs to be utilized every day, no matter how much we have (or don't have, depending on how you look at it). Keep up the great work, Ben.

With this video you touched me, you touched my soul and it made me sad and happy at the same time. Should I feel sorry for those people? Or shall I be proud of them and look up to what they face every day. Or are they totally fine with their lives and I just behave dumb? Light and heavy. Inspiring to get up and do something and on the same time sit down and just inhale the world. Maybe it is all about this. Light and shadow. Ying and Yang. You are asking yourself if you do enough and I think this is one of the drops that truely helps, because you walk through live with open eyes and an open heart. If we don’t think, but feel and listen, I believe you’ll do just fine. Thank you very much for your bravery to share this story, these pictures, a glimpse into you. I would love to see those pictures in an exhibition. But not in a clean way where rich people discuss whether this is a good one. Maybe in an open place. My family for example has a live club, and I thought about turning places of art and culture (music, restaurant, theatre, …) into galleries. I just found you, cause I‘m thinking about buying a Leica q2 and wanted some informations. Not just in a technical way, but emotional. And now I‘m grateful to have found your videos, that move and inspire me. Thank you Ben.

What an amazing video, I always look forward to seeing you pop up in my stream. You pose great questions here, I could feel what you felt in those images. You appear extremely humble in all your presentations and your history tells my why. This was emotive, beautiful and touching and I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been moved. We are so lucky and you’ve skilfully put it all into perspective. Thank you 🙏
